A Proven Plan for Protecting Your Memory--At Any Age, At Any Time You've probably taken steps to protect your finances, your health, and your family. Isn't it time to protect your memories? Science is exploding with new discoveries related to the brain, aging, and memory--discoveries that prove the actions you take today impact your memory for decades to come. Dr. Majid Fotuhi, one of the foremost experts in memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, outlines an action plan to improve mental agility and prevent memory loss. The Memory Cure A dynamic 10 step memory protection plan Encouraging updates in the field of cognitive research The truth behind popular beliefs about memory loss and aging A comprehensive resource section including information about clinical trials "Dr. Fotuhi is a gifted teacher, and it comes through in his writing. The language is clear; complex theories and scientific findings are presented for the intelligent layperson in an accessible manner." --Michael Rosenblatt, M.D. Dean, Tufts University School of Medicine "Dr. Fotuhi's book...provides a feast of up-to-date, relevant information on the causes and consequences of Alzheimer's disease and related conditions--and, most importantly, minimizing one's risk of developing them--in a form that is very digestible." --Jason Brandt, Ph.D., ABPP(CN) Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Director, Division of Medical Psychology The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
There is no history of Alzheimer disease in my family, and they all lived from 82 to 89 years. This said, my memory was always poor. I could never remember details. A big part of my problem is that I am not good at noticing them, and very introverted. Anyway, I reached for this book, to see if it can help me. It was a very interesting read. Author is very well informed about current research and hypotheses. I found this book very helpful, and written in simple yet engaging way. A big surprise was to find out that severe chronic depression can lead to huge memory problems. Importance of having vitamines B and E in the diet is also a good tip.
I had started reading The Memory Bible by Gary Small before I found The Memory Cure on CD to listen to on a road trip. At first, I kept thinking I've already read this. They are both easy to understand and have good ideas for keeping your brain working. I will have to get a hard copy of "Cure" so I can study better his 10 step memory protection plan. My younger sisters give me good counsel when they tell me not to quit playing tennis. Our brains need physical and social activities to stay healthy.
Save yourself some trouble and get a more recent book. Whenever discussing a study the author would say "results of this study are expected in 2-3 years". As it's been 18 years since this book was written I'm sure there's more up to date information available.
I loved the book. I liked the narrator (audible book) and I got a lot of information about the brain, memory, and how to protect against early onset dementia. (I my age I like to hear these things!)
This book reminded me of a Dale Carnegie book. I think the narrator was the same. My philosophy in life is that many things we do are self-fulfilling prophecies. People create their own realities in their head. I believe it applies with Alzheimer's disease (Old Timer's Disease), in that it can be preventable through living the basics - exercise, good social interaction, and learning to stimulate the mind AND positive thinking. I want to see some studies with Alzheimer's disease increasing over the years and showing a nice little correlation/causation with the increase in TV watching. Many people think they have memory problems when in reality they don't. It's because they don't try at all to remember crap and put their mind on cruise control by watching TV. And in the famous words of Yoda "that is why you fail."
I'm doing a science experiment right now with my grandma that supposedly has Alzheimer's (She really doesn't though). When I go and see her I tell her that her memory is getting better and to not believe everyone else that tells her it's getting worse or that she's forgetting things. It's working.
I liked the little tecnicas at the end to help with remember dinghies.
This book keeps things positive. Dr. Fotuhi reminds us that Alzheimer's is a rare disease, that we likely don't have it, especially if we're young, and that we can make choices to lower the risk of Alzheimer's in our future. He is a big proponent of exercise, healthy diet, and supplements, specifically Vitamins E and C. This is a helpful, quick book for people who are experiencing anxiety because of memory lapses.
I purchased this book to alleviate my fears of having Alzheimer's...luckily it did. And it was also very informative in terms of how memory works in the brain and things you can do to improve your memory...start eating bluberries now! ;)
It turns out that he 10 things I need to do to avoid memory loss are pretty much he same things I need to do to best enjoy the rest of my life from a fitness viewpoint.
Helpful tips for diet to prevent memory loss (5-6 fruits/day; dairy products, bread, veggies daily; fish/twice a week) and exercises to help you remember. Also good to know: 90% of people who worry about memory loss DO NOT have Alzheimer's. :)
