He’s a shy haiku writer who wears headphones to keep people at a distance. She’s a streamer who always hides behind a mask. After their worlds suddenly collide, these two strangers find themselves sharing secrets they’ve been desperate to keep underwraps. Even though their methods of self-expression couldn’t be more different, they’ll find they understand each other better than they ever expected…
❝ Throughout my whole life… at last I find words bubble up like soda pop.❞
this was cute! very light and a little confusing, but overall I really liked it I think cherry's nickname is so clever, and the fact that he writes haikus religiously and has a few close friends is really endearing also smile (I wish we knew her real name bc I don't like calling her smile 😭) is the sweetest omg. although I do think shes overreacting just a bit to her wearing braces, shes still a lovable character
I thought it was very interesting how this book is very clearly about insecurities, but they seem to be glazed over in favor of focusing on the budding friendship/possible romance, if that makes any sense. It's just that some of the characters' main personality points, their insecurities, are briefly mentioned even though its a big plot point and focus is instead shifted to the two main character's friendship. It's just interesting, not neccessarily bad. like an underlying deep meaning or something.
also, i want a daruma.
❝ Sakura petals… they fade on the wind without a word of farwell.❞
(if I remember the movie correctly, this was foreshadowing)
I may appreciate an anime but I often prefer the original manga. Here the manga is an adaptation of the anime and with an ironical logic I prefer the anime.
Not to say it’s poorly done. It faithfully follows the movie and Oono Imo’s style is cute. But it somehow misses something. The very pop colors most probably. The fluidity of the animation, too. And that little spark that made the characters very alive.
But I’m biased. If you haven’t seen the anime- and even if you have- this is a very decent rom-com, worth a try. The 2 main characters are cute and the side story with M. Fujiyama is touching.
This follows the movie closely, so there wasn't anything new or different for me, but the are is just as beautiful. Don't super love where they chose to end the volume, but that's fine. I know things will work out, but what a cliffhanger!
There are many parallels in this book which I enjoyed. This book traces two love stories...one in the present and one in the past. Cherry (the teen boy) and Smile (the teen girl) fall in love over the course of the book. A project that they work on together is to help Mr. Fujiyama find the record album which had the voice of his love (Sakura) on it. Mr. Fujiyama and Cherry are both talented in writing haikus. Cherry is shy and has been hiding behind his headphones. Smile is also shy (about her braces) and has been hiding behind a mask. As they get to know one another and build confidence they shed the headphones and mask. It is pretty great! I don't usually read manga but I tripped over this title when prepping a bubbles story time. I was delighted that is was so engaging and I could not put it down. I am seeking out the film next! (I learned a lot about the currrent culture of technology, podcasting, influencing, etc. from this book.)
They say opposites attract. But is that true? Cherry is shy, preferring to spend his time writing haikus, wearing headphones, and generally doing his best to avoid people. Meanwhile, Smile is a streamer - famous for hiding her face behind a mask.
Naturally, these two opposites are about to collide, embroiled in a secret they’ll want to keep from the world. In doing so, they’ll get to know one another, finding a connection they’ve always craved.
Review:
I didn’t realize this until after reading it, but is Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, Vol. 1 actually based on anime? You don’t normally see the adaptation going that way, so I found that to be a bit funny (side note: I wonder how the anime is?).
Obviously, I can’t compare the two since I haven’t watched the anime. But I can say that I found this to be a bit on the dry side and did not become at all invested in the story or the characters (sorry to put it so bluntly).
That said, there are some cute elements. If you’re looking for a light rom-com, this one might be worth checking out!
Highlights: Anime Adaptation Cute storytelling Teenage life
Cute art, summer time that I love especially now that the weather here has been a bit more autumny (hopefully soon more summer), two fun/interesting characters (one who makes videos and hides behind a mask because of her overbite (which looked a bit weird in some of the panels) and another one who likes to make haikus and doesn't seem to care about things much given how he reacted to certain events), nice art style though I would like to see this one in colour, the old guy was a nice addition though it broke my heart as well given his condition, fun other characters.
But that ending, no!!! Now I definitely need to continue.
The haikus were cute/fun/pretty but some just felt way too convulted.
He's a quiet kid who keeps his distance by wearing headphones so no one talks to him even though there's actually nothing playing in the headphones. He prefers to write haiku (which is the part of the story I loved the most). She is an effervescent girl who hides behind a mask, not because she's sick but because she wears braces because of an overbite even though she has plenty of followers on social media around the concept of smiling. Odd. But it's the weird things that draw people together and in this case, the two of them.
He's usually at a loss for spoken words until they "bubble up like soda pop" when he sees her. A sweet story but I probably won't continue the series.
Mula2 tu agak pening sket.
Alkisah, Yuki budak perempuan bergigi arnab terlanggar Sakura, budak lelaki introvert. Malu bukan kepalang si Yuki sebab penutup mulutnya tertanggal dan menampakkan gigi arnabnya kepada Sakura. Sakura pulak tersebut "pendakap", hadoiii.. Dalam kelam kabut tu, mereka tertukar telefon. Dah sampai ke destinasi masing2 barulah mereka sedar pasal tu. Maka bermulalah pengenalan mereka dari peristiwa kebetulan tu...
I started with the digital galley - which of course is impossible to read - so I picked this up at work.
I was absolutely hooked on the premise - shy haiku writer and cheerful streamer team up to help a senior citizen find a lost record over a final summer after high school. It's SUPER adorable. This manga is a little short and the next volume isn't out until September but I am tempted to watch the anime.
(This finally fulfills the "read a book based on a popular movie" prompt for the Dear Sugar reading challenge this year)
Cute story. I’ve seen the anime version, so it didn’t hold surprises. A boy who has trouble communicating except with haikus and a girl who’s ashamed of her teeth meet by accident when their phones get switched, and strike a friendship during the summer break. The first volume ends about half-way to the story, and most of the emotional stuff is in the second volume. It’s worth continuing with the story.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Very cute, but also very short. This is based off a movie, and it sounds like this is about half of the plot. Maybe this could have been one big volume instead of two smaller ones? I think it would help the pacing. The first couple of chapters need to set up the premise, so this volume ends up being very heavy on character and world building. Still, it captured my attention, because I do tend to like those quiet, heartfelt stories.
A sensitive and engaging profile of two teens who are both artistic and eccentric.
This work is available as a 3 volume manga (2020jpn. 2023eng), a single volume light novel (2020jpn, 2023, and a film which was first at the Shanghai FIlm festival in 2020 and then released to Japanese theaters and to Netflix in 2021.
A sweet little short run series that touches on self worth, loneliness, and of course romance. I like the characters and the general shape of the story, but like so many romance manga I found myself just desperately wishing the characters would Talk to each other! Still very sweet, just a bit frustrating too.
i love love love the movie (one of my faves) and the manga didnt really branch out much — so it didnt have the initial spark and i think for this one the anime delivers the story better (you can see them more as 'real people'). love love love the story & themes though
So freaking cute! Absolutely love the detailed characters and beautiful style. A wonderfully soft story. Totally recommend to lovers of Skip and Loafer.
This is such a cute story. If you like the anime, you’ll like this manga. They will be adding scenes that were cut from the movie so I’m excited to continue!
I’ve read through a lot of “romance” manga, but this one was already super cute and not cringey at all, just in Vol 1. I’m definitely going to invest in this series. Cherry and Smile are adorable!
This had cute art and a lot of promise, but I had no idea what was going on for the first half and the second half was still hard to follow. I don't really feel like anything happened.
I love the sweetness and awkwardness of this story, the parallel stories of Cherry/Smile and Fujiyama and Sakura. It's a great manga of young love, insecurity, regret, and capturing the moment.
