The world is full of vampires, supernatural creatures who drain the blood from humans without mercy. Fighting such beings is the foundation of Isuzu Osaka’s life, but with humanity losing the war, desperate times call for desperate measures. To protect his friends, Isuzu sets out to strike a deal with Baroque―a powerful vampiress whose beauty is said to drive all who gaze upon her mad…
Vampires have ruined the Nikkei Index, so humans need to get rid of them. Basically. Isuzu is a brave human, but humanity stands no chance. Unless, of course, they enlist the mysterious vampiress, Baroque. Because when it comes to vampires, if it ain’t Baroque, just nix it.
(Never sorry. Ever.)
Well, having Baroque look like she’s within hailing distance of the age of consent puts this story immediately one up on the icky visuals of Momo the Blood Taker at least, though this story’s got a few issues of its own.
On the plus side, give me two leads like this and you’re halfway to something. Minus the annoying amnesia angle (seriously, I should immediately set books on fire for using this trope), Isuzu is capable and compassionate to a fault and very good at what he does.
Which doesn’t mean anything without Baroque - the story takes a fascinatingly accurate look at just how idiotic and backwards most bureaucracy is and how it blinds people to the obvious solutions right in front of them. Humanity has tried for years to pry open her secrets, with no success, when all she wants is a simple thank you.
Isuzu is a big picture thinker and he’s got a natural charm that just works a treat on people, but especially a young-looking vampire. The way he talks when he decides to risk testing Baroque’s alleged power of killing people with her visage was enough to give even my hetero self the vapours. Their chemistry is a large part of the fun.
It also helps that they’re both very good when the chips are down - Isuzu is completely outclassed, which becomes a real issue towards the end, but he’s quick on his feet and the way he saves himself from a face shredding during a vehicular attack is exactly the right kind of ridiculous that I like in my action.
Baroque’s power is a bit more silly at points, at least at the start, but there’s still a lot of brain behind all this action and thinking about what’s happening where. There’s some clever business with a desk at one point that shows that this isn’t just action for action’s sake, even with the usual pulls of information from nowhere.
The story goes a bit wobbly at the end, once it establishes itself, which does lead me to worry a little more about the future prospects. Ye olde predatory lesbian shows up and she’s brought a partner with her who she has no trouble either fondling or stripping.
There‘s a sense that the story has decided to go after some basic pandering, but to my mind it was doing just fine beforehand. I’m really asking for a lot from any given manga, I recognize that, but it was genuinely more interesting without all that. It’s trashy storytelling shorthand.
Still, again, all respect for the way the narrative continually shows how utterly outmatched Isuzu is. He might have the moves, but against vampires that doesn’t mean a heck of a lot and the way the volume closes out suggests he’s going to be hurting from a moment of forgetting his place.
It’s a shonen mess, but rather than a garbage dump, it’s more like one of those meals where you throw several different leftovers in a frying pan and make a thing out of it. May not be elegant, but gets the job done.
3 stars - didn’t hate it, really liked the leads, dubious about where it’s going. It has ambition and skill, especially at then start, that do make me want to read more. We’ll see if that happens, but I’ve read worse in the genre, that’s for sure.
Don’t get me wrong. The story, the magic, and the world building has potential. But the fan service and making the women characters look like little girls is just creepy.
This was recommended to me and it was a great reminder why I don’t ask for recommendations. I guess the cover and a quick flip through should have been enough, but I was trying to trust the recommendation.
"The premise of My Dear, Curse-Casting Vampiress is not an entirely surprising one for manga, but it does set up an engaging dynamic nonetheless. With paranormal action and a tentative partnership/romance at the center, there are lots of engaging storytelling dynamics to be had here, and Volume 1 only barely scratches the surface of what is sure to follow."
The cover and the fact that it involved vampires caught my attention. To be honest, it wasn't what I hoped it would be, but it wasn't bad either. Volume one was a nice build-up for the characters and to the start of their partnership.
I brought this series cause the cover looked really nice and it sounded like it would be an okay read, but after the first volume i can say I'm very glad I grabbed this! I really hope it continues this moment cause I am well into it!
Very very cool premise and action scenes, but I hated how infantilized they made Baroque. And I wasn’t a fan of the fan service at the end either, it just made me uncomfortable. So this was a bummer for a story that otherwise could’ve been great.
While it wasn’t the worst vampire book I’ve ever read…it wasn’t that good. In fact it was quite odd with all the lesbian references between the two vampire sisters. Not for me. I will not be continuing this series.
A fairly standard premise but with an interesting human protagonist and partner-dynamic (he, though a badass by human standards, is terribly outclassed by the superpowered vampires he nonetheless diligently hunts, and willingly takes a sidekick role; she, though small and fragile-looking, is the muscle of the pair).
It is a bit creepy that they made the vampiress Baroque look so young (baby-faced, but with (thankfully reasonably-proportioned) breasts), but at least he views her in more of a respectful kid-sister way. Near the end, though, we meet a creepy Lolita-fetishy vampire villain pair, starring the childish but overtly predatory lesbian (uuuugh) and her 'sister' (might be a cutesy term for 'girl-toy' - unclear) whom she routinely gropes/fondles and at one point strips down to her negligee. That creepy angle costs this rating a star - here's hoping the series doesn't devolve into a gross Loli fanservice-fest, because the plot until then was interesting. I enjoyed the inverted expectation of the badass (by human standards) guy being more or less the damsel-in-distress figure in the duo, since he's a human up against superpowered creatures. His self-sacrificing dedication to doing what's right - even if that means teaming up with a vampire to protect the innocent by killing the vampires attacking humanity, even at risk of his own life from both vampires and from distrustful human authorities - make him a highly likeable protagonist. Though sorely outclassed by the enemy, he still has fighting skill and wits to his credit, and doesn't mind taking a back seat to his superpowered partner to get the job done (no macho BS!). And his partner Baroque is very worried about his self-sacrificing streak (so no haughty 'bow down, lowly expendable human' persona from her). Fights involve clever problem-solving and trying to outwit and trap the enemy, not just flashy brainless punching, which is another plus.
I am willing to try volume 2, hoping that we get more plot development and don't fall into a pit of Loli fanservice creepiness. Fingers crossed!
Content concerns: vampire violence (murder, dismemberment, etc), forcible confinement, torture (more overheard than graphically seen), injuries including obviously severely broken limbs and exanguination, some suggestive scenes including vampires with a childlike appearance, mention of suicide
The whole world is besieged by vampires, and Japan is hit especially hard with it's tightly-populated big cities. However, there is this urban myth about a vampiress who is so beautiful, everybody who gazes upon her kills themselves, and she is called Baroque the Vampire Slayer. Maybe there is something to this.
Our protagonist is an elite soldier part of the vampire security, a task force specialised on getting rid of the undead bloodsuckers. Their trade is gory, and most people don't last long. So if there is something, or rather someone, who would give humankind an edge in the fight for their lives, it should be found, soon.
Of course, the urban myth turns out to be true and out protagonist is the human contact. They go out and slay, quite literally.
I admit that it was a while since I read a manga with such heavy fanservice, but nevertheless one character repulsed me. A lot. There is a fair bit of dehumanziation going on, if you can call it that, with the vampires. They may look slightly like humans, but are referred to as "it". Maybe the vampire who repulsed me was tying into that.
While I am curious about how the plot continues, I feel no great urge to look it up now. I can see this going two ways: Either I'll find myself someday in the mood for this, or I'll stumble across this review and realise I've lost all interest. We'll see.
If you want to read this, be prepared for lots of blood and weird fanservice. If that doesn't bother you, you'll probably have a fun time with this action manga.
Isuzu Osaka knows this. As a member of Japan’s police force tasked with taking care of vampires, he has seen firsthand how outclassed humans are against the vicious and supernaturally strong creatures.
Things are looking desperate.
Isuzu knows despite times call for desperate measures.
As such, he sets out to strike a deal with a powerful vampiress known as Baroque.
As beautiful as she is powerful, Baroque slays her own. She knows how to kill vampires and beat them at their own games.
Despite her skill in slaying vampires, she’s been kept a prisoner by humans for couple decades now—she surrendered herself. She’s kept silent since.
Will Isuzu be able to coax Baroque into making a deal to save humanity—her help in exchange for her freedom?
Or, will he succumb to this vampiress in more ways than one?
This is a fun and sweet, little supernatural romance story~
I really appreciate when romance series like this one have a convincing premise—or, at least try to have one. For a series that’s presumably supposed to be focused on romance, this one spends a decent amount of time fleshing out the vampires themselves and their powers. I actually like the way curses are woven into the vampire lore here. It’s a little different.
Also, the central characters are really delightful. I like their designs, their personalities, and their chemistry.
So far, this series has a lot of promise. I’m looking forward to reading more~
I received My Dear, Curse-Casting Vampiress in return for an honest review from the publisher.
Vampires are real they loom in the darkness and hunt the humans. Isuzu is a trained vampire hunter but even he and his friends aren't enough to stop the rising vampire attacked. When he get's a tip about the vampire Baroque who slays vampire he decides to break her out to kill a strong vampire.
I like Isuzu he's willing to risk his own life to save his friends and trusting Baroque the beautiful vampire he rescued from lock down. I like the idea for Baroque she's this bad-ass vampire who uses curses to kill vampires. This is an interesting concept it reminds me a little of Blood+ which is one of my favorite animes.
This is my first manga by the author but I'm hooked, the story is captivating. The characters are easy to connect with you just can't help liking them. The artwork is beautifully done. I can't wait for the next installment to see what happens next to our duo. Perfect for fans of vampire fantasy with potential for a little romance. I actually enjoyed it so much that I had to pick up the paperback manga for my collection.
A good start for a series. The world is riddled with all-powerful, beast-like vampires that elite soldiers try to kill, without much success. Isuzu is the best of them, but even he needs help. That comes in form of Baroque, a delicate vampire slaying sorceress vampire. The two team up to defeat the vampires, but it turns out Baroque isn’t the only one of her kind, and the others aren’t as willing to kill vampires as she is. There’s also a mystery in Isuzu’s past that needs solving.
I liked the story, but it didn’t really excite me. For some reason Isuzu turned from a cool elite soldier to a fumbling, awkward guy during the course of it. I hope that’s only temporary and he finds his cool in subsequent volumes. Baroque was a typical overly sensitive manga girl.
The black and white illustrations were good. The lines were dark, but it suited the story, which is fairly violent.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Love the overpowered fmc, the artwork is good and action scenes well done. Not sure at the moment why all the female vampires so far look so young and the male vampires are all middle-aged, but I'm not too bothered yet. Baroque seems more childish in the beginning but towards the middle/end you can tell that even though she might look a little younger she is more mature having been around awhile (assumption, but it's been 20 years since she's been captured and she was active before that so...). There is a solid storyline starting, and I can see this becoming a good vampire series. Will continue on to see how it progresses.
I picked up the first three volumes of this series at a flea market for a really good price and thought it was a great find, but now I’m regretting not checking any reviews first.
The story actually started off with an interesting universe and premise, but as I kept reading, it just got weirder and weirder. All the girls are drawn to look extremely young, and it honestly comes across as creepy. Sure, maybe the vampire angle is supposed to justify it, but it still feels off.
Since I already own the next two volumes, I’ll read them in hopes that things improve, but at this point, I’m pretty sure I’ll just end up selling the set.
This has some interesting elements and one of the most realistic depictions of ill-considered government dysfunction I've seen in manga. ("What do you mean she won't talk to us when we've kept her bound in a cell for twenty years? And gee, why have vampire attacks increased since we imprisoned her? I don't get it!") There are a couple of unsavory (to me) tropes, such as the adult loli and the predatory lesbian, but this still has potential.
I found this randomly at B&N and it appears someone had accidently put it out about 10 days early actually. I flipped through and thought it looked interesting and I liked the art style.
Well I have mixed feelings. Part of me really really loved it - the action, interesting story, art style, characters seem interesting.
Part of me is very hesitant about where this is going. I dunno. We will see where volume two goes.
My Dear, Curse-Casting Vampiress volume 1 is a pretty good start to a new vampire story. I liked the characters, and the artwork is dark and gorgeous. The story is entertaining with action-packed scenes and gore. There is a possible romance between the two leads, but we'll probably find out more as the series goes on.
I am intrigued and am enjoying this game. I’m already ready for the next volume. I’m not even sure if it’s come out yet this one has been sitting on my bookshelf cause I was hoping to get closer to the next book closer to it’s available date
This book is full of action. I do not recommend this for small children because there is a lot of blood. At the end of the book got a little inappropriate the way one of the vampires positioned on the man. I recommend this book but not to kids
This is a weird series. I think I like what it’s putting down, if I ignore all of the stuff that’s putting me off about it. 😂 Their dynamic is unique & sweet.
Pretty enjoyable and I’m definitely invested in these characters already. I don’t really… understand the two “sisters” but other than that, this was great!
