For Ben, there's more involved in the annual Striped Bass Derby than catching the biggest fish. He's proud of the fact that no one has ever beaten his father's record which was won before Ben was born. But now Ben overhears two men plotting to win the prize money by cheating! Ben has to stop them, at all costs, but bringing the men to justice turns out to be a chase that almost costs him his life.
Cynthia DeFelice is the author of many bestselling titles for young readers, including the novels Wild Life, The Ghost of Cutler Creek, Signal, and The Missing Manatee, as well as the picture books, One Potato, Two Potato, and Casey in the Bath. Her books have been nominated for an Edgar Allen Poe Award and listed as American Library Association Notable Children's Books and Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year, among numerous other honors.
Cynthia was born in Philadelphia in 1951. As a child, she was always reading. Summer vacations began with a trip to the bookstore, where she and her sister and brothers were allowed to pick out books for their summer reading. “To me,” she says, “those trips to the bookstore were even better than the rare occasions when we were given a quarter and turned loose at the penny-candy store on the boardwalk.” Cynthia has worked as a bookseller, a barn painter, a storyteller, and a school librarian.
When asked what she loves best about being an author, she can’t pick just one answer: “I love the feeling of being caught up in the lives of the characters I am writing about. I enjoy the challenge of trying to write as honestly as I can, and I find enormous satisfaction in hearing from readers that something I wrote touched them, delighted them, made them shiver with fear or shake with laughter, or think about something new.” Cynthia and her husband live in Geneva, New York.
If you like to read outdoor books with lots of memories then this is your book. The book is called Devils Bridge by Cynthia Defelice. The book is all about fishing and making memories. Ben admires the memory of his father that holds the record striped bass. In this book Ben cherishes the moment of his father who holds the record in the striped bass competition. So Ben tries to go win the competition but he over here's people talking about cheating to win the competition. Ben would have to catch huge fish to be able to win the derby and get the 10,000 dollars. The 10,000 dollars would help him and his mother. Ben and Jeff went right after school and started fishing. Ben saw the people and they had the fish for 6 days and they added weight to it to win. They tried to stop them from turning it in but they couldn't. Now they are hoping that the judges catch them. This book appeals to people who like being outside and fishing. Also people that have to deal with cheaters in competitions. One strength this book has is the way the book can relate to people that fish and how much you can imagine the book in your head. Another strength this book has is the way it is written such as how the people talk and what they are like. One weakness of this book is how it does not talk a lot about Ben's father and what he was like. The last weakness is they don't tell us about how Ben is and how he acts and what he does. This is one of my favorite books because I really like to fish. Also this book is good for people that dont like to read because it is a nice short but a fun book to read. This shows that you can have lots of fun and make memories with friends.
Ben Daggett is participating in the annual bass tournament hoping to catch a stripped bass bigger than the record setting one his father caught years ago. But, this isn't just a fishing story. Ben overhears two me plotting to cheat and win the big prize. Now they're after Ben
Good story, good suspense. This is a good read for younger middle-grade readers.
One interesting thing about this book is that devils bridge is a real place. I did not like the book because it did not have enough action in it. This book is realistic fiction.
Personal response:I liked this book because it is about fishing. The main character, Pap, is a big fisherman, and I also like that they go fishing all the time. I liked this book because a bunch of friends go fishing, and it is kind of what me and some of my friends do.
Book overview: This book was about a boy named Pap who is in a competition to get the biggest fish. During the 2 weeks of the tournament, you have catch the biggest fish you can. So Pap and a couple of his friends, would go down to the Devil's bridge where Pap's dad got the biggest fish a couple of years ago before he died in a car crash. They catch some nice fish, but the second day of the tournament some of Pap's buddies catch one and the blow air in it so it looks bigger. They end up getting caught and are disqualified. So that left Pap by himself. He ends up not getting a fish because his mom was dating another boy, and his mom and him were always fighting.
Recommendation: I think people that like to go fishing will like this book. I would say like 10 and up will like this. I think females and males would like this book because not just males go fishing

Jack dagget, his dad died of a terrible fishing accident. Jack dagget holds the record on the island for largest fish for the annual derby. His son and his best friend jeff manning are trying to catch a bigger fish when they over hear about someone cheating to win. They go home to tell jeffs parents about it but there not home so they go back off fishing to get there minds about it because it was his dads record and now it got cheated out. The two guys put mercury in the fish and jeff and him tried to find the main judge to tell him but they were too late to get there but still they put out a large search for them to find out if they really cheated. During this whole time him and his mom were having conflicts so that didnt help his mindset any better. I didnt like the book cuz it took a long time to get ot the point if they put more action in it i could read it easier and like it better.
This is a pretty good book. His dad died when he was a young age. So this guy named freddy trys to cheat in this fishing derby. This young buys name is Ben by the way, and his dad was a big time fisherman. His died caught the biggest striper fish. So freddy, and this guy try to put mercury inside the fish. So this book is really about his dad's record, and trying to stop Freddy and his friend from cheating.
This was an amazing book! I though that it definitely had a lot of action, a great plot, and a great ending! The author described the sea-side town very vividly so I could really see it in my mind. This is a must read!
This was a book in contention for the Maud Hart Lovelace book award during the 1995-6 school year. This was my response at that time: Child stops some cheaters in a fishing story.
