Book II in The Vertigo Chronicles, and sequel to Amber Allure's best-seller Vertigo...
With a mysterious past he can't remember, and special powers he can't explain, Simon Saint-Saens hunts the creatures of darkness others fear--beings that come through dimensional rifts into this world from a world called Vertigo. It's a dangerous, desolate existence, and with only one exception from long ago that left him broken-hearted and riddled with guilt, Simon's chosen to isolate himself and fight alone. But when the man he'd once loved and thought dead makes a sudden and shocking appearance, Simon finds himself torn between his self-imposed duty and the deeply entrenched feelings he still has for Jaden Cole.
Enslaved in Vertigo since childhood, Jade was one of the innocent lives Simon saved when he first began hunting. Simon took him in and nursed him back to health, but when their friendship grew into something deeper, he sent Jade away and cut him out of his life. Nine years later, when a new evil stirs to life in Vertigo and targets Simon as its enemy, Jade returns. He's not the same innocent he was when he and Simon first met, though. The years as a slave in Vertigo left him with a permanent and savage affliction, one he must battle constantly in order to keep a tentative grip on his humanity. His reunion with Simon is emotional and complicated. But even though he's now a creature of darkness, he's never stopped loving Simon and will risk everything to protect him.
After a battle in which Simon is almost killed, Jade knows there's only one being powerful enough to help them. He and Simon journey into the dark caverns beneath the city to an ancient realm of magic and illusion. There, Jade makes a deal that will help ensure Simon's protection from the wraith that wants him dead. In a world where human inhibitions are stolen at the door, however, and primal passions reign, Jade quickly finds himself losing control not only of the beast that lives within him, but a dark dangerous secret he's yet to share with Simon...one that could shatter everything...

I’m author M.L. Rhodes and I write m/m romance and fantasy. This means my books are about gay or bisexual men meeting, falling in love, and finding happily-ever-afters with other men. Sometimes the settings are contemporary, sometimes the stories take place in worlds filled with dragons, witches, or other fantasy and paranormal creatures. But there’s one thing of which you can be certain…in my books, love always wins!

Shattered is the second novella in the The Vertigo Chronicles and continues the story of Simon and Jade – two paranormal men battling monsters from an alternate universe who filter into our world each night through a vertex to hunt humans.
In this installment, Jade takes Simon to meet with an underground (literally) race of demi-gods in hopes of receiving a spell that will protect them from a super-villain who is targeting them.
I liked this second installment in the series better than the first one, Vertigo. It delves much deeper into the characters and adds significantly to the world building. The Vertigo Chronicles is a dark paranormal series. The romance (and sex) is sad, angst ridden but also very tender, even when it is rough.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Like the first, this felt rushed. So I rushed to finish it, skimming much of the ending. Definitely setting up for more books, but given that it has been 10 years highly doubt we'll see another one.
Got real heavy Hellboy 2 movie vibes, where they met with Death, you'll know it when you get there.
Shattered is the sequel of Vertigo -- in this story Jade brings Simon to meet Fae queen in order to get protection from the wraith demons that are hunting them.
I must say that I love the second book as well. Here, we find more information about Jade's life, during the nine years he is apart from Simon. For some readers, the back-and-forth sacrifing one self for the one you love might be exhaustive ... but not for me. I have yet find it annoying. Hey, I watch Supernatural for 5 seasons and that's what I love about the show :). The fact that both Jade and Simon will literally do anything to save the other half -- there is no space for doubting their love for one another. So the story is just intense and emotional. The sex is pretty hot too ... sometimes tender and sometimes a bit rough.
However, I feel like the ending is not yet finished, right? There are still questions left to be answered. Like what happened to Simon in the past, who is he, really? Then what will happen when the Fae queen asks for Jade's debt. Are there any book in this series in the future? Because I'm definitely on board! When it comes to dark paranormal series, when both the heroes carry the burden (and love) on their shoulder, this is one of my favorites.
I loved this installment of the Vertigo Chronicles as much or more than the first! All I can say is that you’ve got to keep your eye on those seemingly sweet characters, because they’re the ones that can surprise you. And Jaden? Full of surprises in this installment:)
Each and every time I read a book by this author, I’m struck with how vividly the words come to life for me and the intensity of each feeling I experience. The emotional and sexual tension present in her writing are capable of shooting sparks off the pages and I feel like I’m practically vibrating because the experience is so gripping.
I really, really hope there’s more to come in the Vertigo world. Simon and Jaden deserve to conquer all those bad demons, save the world, have unlimited hot manlove, and live happily ever after. Sigh…a girl can dream, right?
This sequel to Vertigo follows on directly from it. Jade takes Simon to get the protection he mentioned. Simon is not happy about where they go or what happens once they get there. Once again they reach a Happy For Now ending, but Happy Ever After still looks like it will be impossible for them to find.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered and battles to be fought.
This cover isn't doing too much for me either -- not to mention extremely different from book one (though a tad more appealing than the last). While I love the qualities and background to the characters and the places Rhodes has created, the execution is once again fairly unimpressive. It just isn't what it could be, and the disparity of what I find could have been written, and the lesser output I'm seeing is dissatisfying.
