Too much of the book stretches plausibility and while one reads it one can't help but think that not all that much is really happening in this plot. The book kicks off with a very harsh scene that makes us despise one of the key characters but deprives the characters of complexity it so richly could have enjoyed. The good guy is too much of a shining example of righteousness. Perhaps the author felt he had to make him that way to excuse his profession. At points the book works well and the location are exotic and interesting, all the more so due to the period it was written and takes place in. But ultimately while it was a quick read, I can't say it was a particularly fulfilling or enjoyable one.
