This is another book that my sister had "pestered" me to read for ages until I finally caved about 2 years ago. I didn't remember much about it anymore, which meant that I neither loved or hated it, so I decided to reread it this weekend and see whether I should become a Hannah Howell fan like my sister...

Sigimor Cameron, a Highland Laird, goes to England to help Peter Gerard, an Englishman who saved his life years ago. But when Sigimor and his clansmen arrive at Drumwich Castle, it's too late: Peter's already been killed by his evil cousin Harold, who has taken control of the place and captures Sigimor and his men. Harold's plan to hang Sigimor and his men are thwarted by Peter's sister Jolene, who sets them free in exchange for Sigimor's help to get her and Peter's son Reynard to safety. As Jolene explains to Sigimor, Harold plans to kill 3-year-old Reynard in order to inherit Peter's title and fortune, so she needs to take the boy away from Drumwich Castle until she can find a way to expose Harold's crime and defeat him.

Once they're free, Sigimor and his men take Jolene and Reynard with them on their journey back to Scotland, where they'll be able to protect them, but Harold goes after them. When Sigimor finds out that Harold isn't only after Reynard but also after Jolene, and that her evil cousin intends to marry her by force, he decides marrying her himself is the solution. After all, if she's already married to someone else, Harold can't force her to marry him, right? The fact that Sigimor is attracted to Jolene and can't wait to bed her is only a perk to this brillian solution... Okaaay, Sigimor, if you want to keep fooling yourself, be my guest. ;)

Jolene is also very attracted to Sigimor and agrees to his proposal, even though she doesn't plan to stay married to him forever. She knows she can seek an annulment later even if the marriage has been consummated - and her marriage to Sigimor will be consummated, no doubt about it! Jolene isn't being deceptive, she just wants to make the best of her marriage while it lasts. She doesn't know how she can stay with Sigimor in Scotland forever when she's promised her dying brother Peter to watch over his son Reynard, who must return to England as soon as Harold's threat is defeated. But will Sigimor let her go?

This was a rather enjoyable read, or should I say "reread", but I still don't get my sister's "fascination" with this book. Sigimor was fun and sexy, but the way he fell for Jolene so hard and fast didn't work for me. She was also fun and likable, but I didn't see sparks flying when she was with him. The chemistry wasn't there - or if it was, I didn't feel it.

Sigimor's extended family and friends made appearances throughout the story, and I admit I got a bit lost trying to keep track of them. This book is part of a huge series and I haven't read any of the previous books, so I'm afraid I didn't really care for those secondary characters. They were distracting and I wish the time spent with them had been spent furthering Sigimor and Jolene's chemistry.

As for Harold's pursuit, I thought it lacked tension. While I was reading this book, I never felt any fear for Jolene's or Reynard's safety - not even when she was captured, not only once but twice - and I kept thinking Harold was one of the weakest villains I've ever met. That wasn't a good thing, considering this story was basically focused on Sigimor, Jolene & Co. trying to escape Harold's evil clutches.

All in all, I don't regret rereading this book because it was an OK read, but now I remember why it wasn't memorable.

A well-written historical with quite a charming and sweet alpha Scottish hero and a brave, resourceful heroine. I found it rather long and detailed- I think I was probably not in the mood for the tortuous politics of England/Scotland (and I always end up hating the English because, well, the history AND Outlander ) but it was still fun.
The Scots brogue was written out and that can often annoy me, but somehow it worked here, so kudos to the author.
In terms of steam, there were several sexy scenes, although they were not as detailed as I have become used to. All that CR and NA stuff has clearly influenced me!
I certainly enjoyed this enough to be interested in reading more by this author.

Ii dau 4 stele.

Ahhh this was a sublime reading experience for me! It's the second Hannah Howell novel that I've read, and I absolutely loved it! When I started reading reviews for Ms. Howell's various novels, so many reviewers compared her to Julie Garwood, who is my all time favorite author of Medieval and Highland romance novels. I didn't see any similarities in the first Howell novel I read, "Beauty and the Beast" and was a bit disappointed--although that was a really good read for me.

However, as soon as I started reading this book, I understood completely what others were saying. OMG! This book is very much like a Garwood novel! I absolutely love the story that unfolds in "Highland Conqueror." Sigimor--really Ms. Howell must do something about the names she chooses for her characters. LOL--is a wonderful hero. He has qualities of an alpha male, but for the majority of the story, he evinces such a caring gentle attitude towards Jolene that I couldn't help but fall in love with him.

The story starts with Sigimor and five of his family members being held prisoner in the dungeons of Drumwich Castle. Sigimor is in England at the behest of his friend, Peter, Earl of Drumwich, who asked for Sigimor's help. When Sigimor arrived, he discovered that Peter is dead and Peter's cousin, Harold, has taken control of Drumwich. Very quickly, Harold takes Sigimor and his companions as prisoners and holds them in the dungeon pending their hanging.

Lady Jolene Gerard, Peter's sister, frees the men, and request their help in getting herself and her nephew--the legal heir to Drumwich--safely out of Harold's clutches. Harold is intent on killing Reynard--Peter's 3 year old son--and marrying Jolene to secure his claim to Drumwich.

Sigimor and his men flee, taking Jolene and Reynard with them, thus immediately thwarting Harold's dastardly plans. Harold is forced to pursue them across the border into the Highlands of Scotland. A large part of the story encompasses the group's travels to Sigimor's holding, Dubheidland.

During the journey, Sigimor decides that in order to better protect Jolene he needs to marry her. Once he convinces her of the rightness of his decision, the two marry, although Jolene keeps in the back of her mind the fact that she can easily obtain an annulment if/when she returns to England.

The story that unfolds is, in a word, gripping. It's chock full of intrigue and excitement, what with treachery, betrayal, kidnapping, greed, murder, and an ex-lover of Sigimore's who is determined to win him back. The relationship between Sigimor and Jolene is extremely touching and oh so sensual. The very first time he lays eyes on Jolene--and I do mean the very FIRST time--Sigimore's mind screams "mine." This is true even though Jolene is the complete opposite of the type of woman Sigimor usually finds attractive--Jolene is small, thin, dark-haired, and worst of all, English!

For her part, Jolene too is extremely attracted to the gorgeous Highlander. Soon she finds herself fighting against intense feelings of lust--at least she supposes it's lust, as she's never actually experienced it before. Jolene is smart, cunning, stubborn, and determined. She stands up to Sigimor whenever the occasion calls for it and refuses to be cowed by the highlander. Sigimor can't help but admire the woman who so bravely stands up to him, when most women find him intimidating.

This book makes for fabulous reading! If you're a Julie Garwood fan like I am, you very well may love this book. It's well written, with an engaging, dynamic plot, and a wonderful cast of characters. I loved all the members of Sigimore's massive family, especially Liam and Somerled (what kind of name is that?!), Sigimore's cousin and twin brother respectively.

So, bottom line, I loved this book and very highly recommend it. FYI, this is not a clean romance. Although I have to say that Ms. Howell's love scenes are some of the most beautifully written ones I've ever read. They are fully described, yet are not the least bit crude, nor, IMO, overly graphic. Happy reading!

3 stars.

This is about Sigimor, the laird of the red-haired Cameron clan, who went to England to answer the call for help from an English Earl who saved his life years ago. Unfortunately, the Earl was already killed by his usurper cousin by the time he arrived and they were imprisoned to be hanged. Fortunately, the Earl's sister Jolene, managed to hide her nephew and herself and was able to free them, and providing them means of escape.

So most of the book is taken with their escape from England back to Scotland, via the MacFingal lands. We've seen Sigimor and his red-haired clans in previous books, together with the handsome Liam, so the interactions with the MacFingals are nothing new. What I did find strange is how Sigimor has been able to flit about so much when he's supposed to be laird of his clan.

It appears as if Ms Howell is running out of Scottish clans and is now starting on introducing the English into the mix.. :) Jolene makes an adequately strong female lead, standing up to Scottish prejudice against the English.

All in all, a pleasant romp, nothing too outstanding.

No lo entiendo, ¿tanto gustó esto?
No me gustó.
PURO y LLANO. No sé qué tantas vueltas. Apenas hablan de algo. Apenas pasan momentos juntos. Apenas apenas apenas apenas.
A ÚLTIMO momento.

XD

It was a great first book to Howell's 'Camerons' series.

Jolene, no matter how petite and delicate she looked, she gave back as good as she got - and then some. The more I read, the more proud of her I became. She made tough decisions, decisions I would never want to make. She had a backbone, didn't take crap from anyone, stood up for herself and listened to her common sense when arguing wouldn't solve anything. She is a female character one can admire without feeling guilty.

And Sigimor... (sigh) now, why can't more men be like him? Strong, brave, courteous, with a head filled with common sense, and enough nerve to admit how he feels. What I wouldn't do to be loved like that.

I sometimes wish I had a time machine. I'd love to go back and visit that era, to really know what it truly was like. Without so many people and buildings and cars... the land must have been really beautiful. The action in the story put you right there with the characters. For the bad ones, you could feel their anger, their hate, their desperation, their greed... and you cheer when the 'bad' is defeated. A few times, there are tears, chuckles and laughter.

For a historical romance that has an added bit of suspense, a great story.

This was a great book and begins a set (that does not need to be read in order) with the Cameron family. This is Sigimor's (the oldest) tale. He's been "in charge" of the massive family for years. He's a crazy Scot! Hunter, predator, but down to earth.

There are many books that follow this with other members of the Cameron family and Sigimor appears in and out of them. He's still a riot!

Funny!

Includes: Murray family tree. Excerpt from "Highland Champion" by Hannah Howell.

I have been enjoying Howell's Murray series, but there's something about "Highland Conqueror" which simply disappointed me. I think it's because it could have been so much better. It's like the author got tired - she had this neat idea but failed to really pull it off.

*sigh*

First off, there's lot more telling than showing than typical of the Murray books with some convenient coincidental meetings to propel the plot. It failed to feel natural.

Secondly, the characters, all of them, were shallow and 1-dimensional. Reynard was non-existent. Barbara was a caricature. Donald a plot-device. But, more importantly, the brothers were fleeting and Sigimor and Jolene... empty.

And finally, the ending. The reason for Jolene to stay. I didn't believe it.

It's not that this is a bad book, but it was not up to par.

Howell has done so much better.

A flat point in the Murray family tree.

Okay! I was a little disappointed. I gave this book 3 stars bc it doesn't live up to the author's other books. I just couldn't get interested in the story.

It was another story of a villian chasing the h and hr. Nothing special. The 3yr old child that rode a LONG journey with them has to be the most well behaved, quite child ever. A child that never talks? The author missed an opportunity.

Another pet peeve: the h can't coldbloodly kill the villian it always as to be in battle. Would he just smartly kill him already instead of waiting for danger. The last half really picks up. I enjoyed the ending.

This was an okay read but not close to her best.

It was solidly okay. There were parts I really liked, and appreciated the plot that brought them all together, but

Also, I know it's a romance, but I really wanted to see more of the side characters. Harold's minion Martin and Sigimor's cousin Liam both had more potential.

BUT: the flight from England to Scotland does make a good backdrop for a 'rescue' romance of sorts, and I do appreciate how the story started with Jolene saving the guys. It's a fun dynamic for the characters.

Highland Conqueror

This story is still in the Murray Family stories. Sigimor and five family members were summoned to England to help an English Earl. But they were to late. But not late to help the sister and his son escape from the clutches of a mad cousin who wanted the title and lands. Jolene helped the Scotsman escape going with them. But trouble still followed them. To keep her from being married to the mad man Sigimor talked her into marrying him. Not the rest of the story is what happens when they decided not w run away but face the danger head on. I have read this year's ago and was pleased to re-read it again.

I am ever astonished at how I consistently love these highlander stories!

You, Ms Howell, are an amazing story teller! Though I have blood ties to Scotland, it still amazes me that I never grow weary of your highlanders! I have of others. The Murrays, Camerons, Fingals and MacNaughtons are just fabulous! Though I must say, I am most intrigued by the Mac Naughtons and the Fingals! I love a great storie with drama, adventure, intrigue and lots of laughter mixed in! Thamnk you so much! Please don't ever stop!

If you've read any of Hannah Howell's books, you will be familiar with the theme of this one ... a brawny, sexy Scot ... a beautiful, captivating woman ... a threat to be overcome ... a romance that grows despite adversity. Her books are easy and quick reads that make a pleasant story. This is a nice addition to her growing list of historical romances.
I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.

Hannah Howell's Highlanders are my favorite reads. I've read every one of her books and have never been disappointed. Her characters are so real and easy to become emotionally entangled with. I read this in one reading. If you enjoy reading about Scotland and Highlanders you will definitely love this.
