Seduce Me was yet another interracial romance novel that I had such high hopes for and felt incredibly let down, especially given the glowing reviews. Because I am a HUGE fan of the interracial genre, I believe in supporting it, but sometimes I just have to wonder if writers understand what makes a novel 'erotic'.

I could easily forgive the spelling and other grammatical errors had the story been compelling enough, or had the characters been drawn well enough to make me care about them. Unfortunately, none of this happened and what began as an interesting premise turns out to be a badly executed novel that isn't even close to EROTIC. Between the head-hopping POV (point-of-view) and the shifting of tenses, this was a very uneven book.

There were a few good points to this novel, which kept me from rating it a one-star. Firstly it takes place in San Franciso--few interracial romances take place on the West Coast, where attitudes towards IR couples aren't as racially loaded as they tend to be in the South and Midwest. Second, the heroine, Ali Donaldson, is an architectural engineer and comes from a wealthy black family and it would have been interesting for author Tracy Ames to have delved into their background a little more. Thirdly, I liked the royal aspect in the character of Nick Joseph, prince of a little country called Sarbania.

Also a sticking point was the heroine having long, silky hair that she can put into a ponytail. It would have been nice to have read about a heroine with either braids or locs, both styles which can also be put into ponytails. It's a personal thing with me; I like diversity, including hair.

Speaking of royalty, there should be some hard and fast rules for authors who want to delve into royalty (even make-believe royalty. The first rule is, royals DO NOT speak slang, and if they do, it should be for comic effect only. I seriously doubt that the princes Harry or William have ever called a lover "baby". The second rule is that there should always be something regal about them which sets them apart from the other characters and which gives the heroine pause to wonder about the hero. Nick came off as a regular (if good-looking) man who just so happened to have an entourage. And did he wear anything other than jeans and a button-down shirt? The only character I thought was well-drawn and likeable enough was Maxim, Nick's valet, sort a of mixture of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Ian Fleming's 'M'.

The 'erotic' scenes were anything BUT and if I was embarrassed to be seen with this book in my hands, it had less to do with the cover and more to do with how BORING and amateurish these scenes were. There was slight attraction, but no tension, no sense that Nick and Ali just HAD to take this relationship to the next level. It was pretty quick how fast they went from a professional relationship to the bedroom. Ali goes from being reserved after being let down in love to this wild woman and the transition is lacking. Also, I don't mind erotic talk between the couple, but it has to make sense, it has to be seductive.

Seduce Me isn't a total loss, and with a good editor and some serious polishing, it can be the book it really is meant to be.
