Although Taiyo Matsumoto desired a career as a professional soccerplayer at first, he eventually chose an artistic profession. He gained his first success through the Comic Open contest, held by the magazine Comic Morning, which allowed him to make his professional debut. He started out with 'Straight', a comic about basketball players. Sports remain his main influence in his next comic, 'Zéro', a story about a boxer.

In 1993 Matsumoto started the 'Tekkonkinkurito' trilogy in Big Spirits magazine, which was even adapted to a theatre play. He continued his comics exploits with several short stories for the Comic Aré magazine, which are collected in the book 'Nihon no Kyodai'. Again for Big Spirits, Taiyo Matsumoto started the series 'Ping Pong' in 1996. 'Number Five' followed in 2001, published by Shogakukan.

I don't know what I just read.

Sometimes you come across a comic drawn and/or written by someone who does not understand the fundamentals of sequential art, and it's the most disorienting, strange experience. It's not just that it becomes nonsense, it constantly feels like sense is just in the other room - you know it's there, but you just can't see it.

And sometimes you come across something unique, like No. 5, where it has the same effect as I've just described, but it is not because of a misunderstanding of the language of comics. It is inherent to the way it is written, and it is drawn. And it isn't bad!

I just found myself having a hard time following who everyone was, why everyone was and what was happening from one page to the next. And I enjoyed it!

It does of course help that Taiyo Matsumoto is a uniquely talented artist, having one of the most recognisable styles I have seen in manga. It's as if Moebius and the animated film Yellow Submarine were inhabiting one body.

Certainly recommended, but with an ever so slight caution!

Read, re-read and re-re-read. Never gets tired.

A good reason to learn all that Japanese -> to read this series.

Taiyo Matsumoto is BY FAR the most interesting Japanese avant-guarde literary comics artist available to American readership right now.

I think things were lost in translation. Could not follow the story, and the art wasn't very good, either.

Unnormal gut.

Taiyo Mastsumoto's experimental art this time around is ugly, irritating and gives a amateurish feeling. The plot and characters are wild without any direction. Took me a lot of effort to finish it.

I had no idea what was going on in this English adaptation, but the art was cool.
