Understood how to read maps ten times faster than the rubbish adult books.

Find a copy it's worth it.

Great little Ladybird book, though I have 1967 version with Ronald Lampitt illustrations.I love maps and still mostly prefer them to SATNAV. i’d much rather negotiate a new place using maps rather than a smartphone app! Learnt some new things from this, eg I knew about the Mercator map, but not how he’d constructed it. And next starry night I’ll be locating the North Star. Look forward to reading this with my grandchildren in a couple of years and maybe making a few maps of our own together!

Although this may not be the most dazzling of subjects, Understanding Maps is quite a comprehensive guide to OS maps, road maps, weather maps, nautical charts, globes and navigation in general. For younger readers, even though this may seem a little dated nowadays, this would make for very recommended reading. Even I never knew the trick using the hands of your watch by the sun to find North. The only thing omitted is the London Tube map, which would confuse matters ;) 4.5/5
