A Gathering of Poems. I like that title. I like it almost as much as Cavalcade of Poems, which just had a stellar ring to it. However, what A Gathering of Poems lacks by way of a title as compared to Cavalcade of Poetry, it by far makes up by the quality of its inclusions.
I fall in and out of reading poetry. I’ll read several anthologies all right in a row and get them all confused when I try to review them, then I’ll go for months without reading any poetry at all. This book, however, stands out in its inclusion of a wide variety of poetry all of which was classic in style.
The poems are divided into seven different sections – ‘Of Man’, ‘Of the World of Men’, ‘Of Time, Living, and Death’, ‘Of Love and Beauty’, ‘Of the World of Nature’, ‘The Poet and His Art’, and ‘Light Verse’. I’ll only include one poem from the entire anthology and (as it happens), it is from the last section. Enjoy!
Epigram by Martial
The golden hair that Galla wears Is hers; who would have thought it? She swears ‘tis hers, and true she swears, For I know where she bought it.” [pg. 172]
XD
Conclusion. If you’re looking for an anthology that maintains brevity while still including a variety of worthwhile poems, this is the book for you.
