" 'Justice Waits' is the gripping true-crime story of a horrific double-murder that changed an entire town. Joel Davis' dogged investigation and perseverance propels the story and prompted the long-dormant case to be reopened. Davis writes with the skill, compassion and soul of a spellbinding storyteller.” — Gary B. Pruitt Chairman, CEO and President of The McClatchy Co.(Parent company of The Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno Bees) "A well-reported and compellingly written account of a crime Davis will never forget.” — Bob Dunning The Davis Enterprise "Grabs you with a building sense of shocking tragedy, and the years of mystery that followed. Takes the reader to a dark moment in an otherwise brighter and more innocent time. Well worth the read for true-crime aficionados and anyone wanting the inside story on this grim chapter in the history of Davis and its Central Valley environs, written by someone who was actually there." — Charles Winkler Managing Editor, Times-Standard, Eureka
I live in Yolo County (in Woodland, the county seat) and have been to Davis more times than I can count. I have never heard of this case before. But this is such a creepy story that I may want to look into it a little more. One of my problems with this book was how short it was, it covers a lot of ground for about 220 pages. The author himself is from Davis and there were several times when he made weird comments about the people who lived there. For instance, while I do agree that the city of Davis is extremely well-educated (um, hello UC Davis...which is known for a top notch vet school, etc) I find a little hard to believe that it's #2 in most educated cities. I'm sure that Davis is up there, I just don't know about the numbers. (And yes, I am aware that this book was written in 2005.)
I was always intrigued by this book. My mom is not a true crime fan, but this one book was in her library of books. Reading the story, I learned why...some of her own children were of the same age at that time. Not only that....it is based primarily in the area we call home. I couldn't read the name of a place without thinking, "I've been there." This story is well-written & I had a hard time putting it down. The author effectively took me through all the twists & turns. I just wish 2 young people with such potential had to loose their lives.
