Errant #1-3

Errant: The Compendium

Rate this book
Aspen Silverglade used to be a force for good, but now she’s just a sword for hire. On the run from the people she once trusted most, she needs to keep her head down and keep moving.

But old habits are hard to quit. One night in a tavern, Aspen tries to save a woman from some unwanted attention. The woman, Charm Linville, is in the middle of a subtle and delicate act of thievery, and she does not appreciate Aspen blundering in.

The disastrous and public rescue-gone-wrong makes the townspeople think Aspen and Charm are a couple. This mistake sets Aspen’s bloodthirsty betrayers on Charm’s trail, tying the two of them together.

Even if Aspen can’t run from her past any longer, Charm shouldn’t have to suffer. Despite Aspen’s determination to work alone, Charm insists on helping—and she has a past of her own. The two of them don’t care for each other’s methods, but as they journey through the villages and wildernesses of Falland and beyond, solving problems and meeting magical friends and foes, Aspen and Charm grudgingly come to care for each other. Can these two guarded, stubborn women admit their feelings, or will Aspen’s enemies kill them first?

Aspen Silverglade’s on the run from people she’d once trusted most. Though determined to make sure no one else has to get hurt, she ends up dragging Charm Linville into her dangerous lifestyle when she mistakenly saves the latter from unwanted attention. Fortunately, Charm had only been in the middle of her own act of thievery. Unfortunately, Aspen’s public rescue makes people think they’re a couple. News spreads fast and now Aspen’s enemies are targeting Charm too.

Despite the danger, the two women find ways to stay together, fighting the good fight and helping those in need all whilst battling their increasingly harder to ignore feelings for each other. But is it possible for love to flourish with the threat of Aspen’s enemies hovering over them?

A book I picked up because the cover was drawn by an artist I follow and love and because the synopsis sounded fun. Also a note: although this is a collection of novellas, I read this compendium version so I’m treating it more like a novel.

I really enjoyed this book! It was fun and full of sapphic sexual tension and pining and in my opinion had an almost cosy fantasy feel to it. It’s not really cosy fantasy, as there are lots of heavy topics mentioned throughout the book and of course our two main characters, Aspen and Charm, are in legitimate danger, but it wasn’t to the point where I was too stressed about the action to enjoy the wholesome moments they had together. Admittedly, it probably helped that the real action didn’t kick in until the last part/novella of the book.

The worldbuilding in the book is wonderful and I absolutely adored the world made here. The normalisation of sharing pronouns was something I loved to see; the different Peoples and the little bits we get of each culture; I would do anything for more content in this universe.

Aspen and Charm themselves are so much fun to read about; Aspen’s strong moral code and grounded personality with Charm’s flirtations and mysterious past. They were horrendously down bad for each other from the get go (take a shot everytime Aspen mentioned Charm’s breasts or every time Charm mentioned Aspen’s muscles and you’d be drunk before the first part’s done) and whilst that was hilarious, the progression of their feelings was so good! From just wanting to fuck, to the way they both desperately tried to rationalise why they were spending time with each other, to the eventual realisation that they couldn’t keep lying to themselves about how deep their feelings ran, it was a lovely romantic slowburn that burned with a lot of sexual tension. There were also really tender and intimate moments throughout that were so heartwarming as you saw them grow closer and closer. Also, the way they were both so different from each other and yet so hilariously similar at times with their feelings was a joy. However, it was indeed frustrating at times how stubborn they were about their feelings!

As for the writing, it was pretty good. I feel like there might have been quite a bit of telling happening at some points, and some portions of the book felt strangely paced (particularly during part 4 and in the leadup to the climax) but overall I found it relatively well-written and easy to read. Some personal things I would have wanted more of was the ending, maybe like an epilogue or something, and the final showdown between Aspen and Charm against the Hanging Scale, especially since we spent the entire book building the threat of the Hanging Scale. I also would have loved more of Charm’s POV!

Overall, whilst it wasn’t perfect, I did enjoy this book a lot; it was a good easy read in an interesting fantasy world, with lovable characters and an amusing sapphic romance to keep you entertained.

5 stars.

Sapphic fantasy romance with a butch bisexual protagonist.

Aspen, our protagonist, is living her life covertly as a sword for hire while on the run from people who she believed were her allies.
She comes across Charm, and rescues her from a man when in reality, it was all a part of Charm's act in her thievery. Charm controls the damage by making it seem as if Aspen and her are wives.

Now here is where it gets interesting.
The act of rescue garners attention and soon both Aspen and Charm are on the run from the people who were originally hunting Aspen.

On their journey away from danger, they meet all sorts of people, they help some and fight some. And among all this, Aspen and Charm grow close. They bicker, they take care of each other, they basically act like an old married couple.

I found this book while I was on my newfound mission to look for books with butch bisexual women. And oh, let me tell you, I am so glad I found this.

The romance was adorable. I loved the bickering and the trials of love. Stubborn old women who won't admit they are attracted to each other. How cute.
Them being vulnerable to each other was another of my favorite part.

Originally I would have given this book 4 stars but I am biased towards the butch bi MC and am going to give 5 stars. It was such a breathe of fresh air seeing a butch bisexual protagonist. We desperately need more of them.

Some more things I liked were the queer norm world, the inclusion of variety of gender identities with Faes and so on. I was also pretty satisfied with the ending. It was a fitting for Aspen.

I'd read and reviewed the first novella contained in this compendium years ago and then never got around to reading the second one even though I'd bought it. I was finally reminded of how much I'd enjoyed it when I saw the compendium in my wishlist and I immediately ordered it, read it and loved it. Aspen was just as honourable, brave and competent and Charm was just as, well, charming and funny as I'd remembered, but in the second and third novellas their vulnerabilities and the reasons for why they were so guarded were revealed and it made me like them even more. Their relationship was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and of their delightful banter. The secondary characters were nice and interesting, especially Strength, the worldbuilding was fascinating and the plot was intriguing enough to hold my attention, but it's true that the two protagonists were the stars of the show.

While I thought that the ending was very appropriate and satisfying, I would have really liked for there to be more adventures with Aspen and Charm because I've gotten to really care about them and their captivating world.
