Fear can be conquered! It's a truth acknowledged brilliantly here in this concise, yet thought-provoking book!
I received this book from a member of my group here, and set about to read and review it. The last year has been on the crazy side, thus I never fully delved into it. Now that I did--I'm so glad I read it! This book is a treasure! I've always been one that could be considered a fearful person, and this book named some of the great ways one could deal with, and succeed in diminishing fear that is keeping you held down.
It done a great job giving hope, inspiration, and encouragement, and truthfully, that's the first step to victory, am I right? This 65-page book is simple to understand, all the while being profoundly helpful! I'm really astonished at its beauty, and would share this with everyone!
(Sadly Negatives...) There are downsides to everything, but I'm sure these don't deface it's value in full.
#1. Incorrect Bible I love my KJV--it's beautiful, elegant, truthful, and what I believe God has sent to us--but the references here (while good verses indeed) are jumbled and upset by multi versions of the Scripture. It's a sad downside to me. #2. There is so much information packed into such a short book, and while there is a vibrant and beneficial summary at the end, I would've appreciated an outline of the methods, and info within. #3. Last, but...well yeah, least.... I adored the fact this book went into detail about turning to God to help you through your problems and fears, but I did feel it was missing something. The Good News wasn't told here, and though it's true this book isn't just to share Christ' love, I find His presence in one's heart is the greatest peace amongst fear there can be! I feel it was lacking in this area.
(Oh So Positive!) Let's get back to the good, eh?
#1. The writing here was fabulous! I cannot exclaim that enough. Grammar was right on. Punctuation and wording correct in every category, and overall just great readability that caused great understanding and interest. #2. A guide for fear completely! There's a punch of wonder within these pages, I'll tell you. Here is steps, examples, and recommendations (page 29-30 is most definitely me, just for extra info). It's beneficial not only because of the great amount of info, but because now you'll know how to put it into action! #3. God's will is first and foremost. That truth was illustrated on walls of white here--complete and bright! That is the truth, and our help when fear has knocked us off our feet (don't worry, this book can help you up)!
I truly enjoyed this book. I'm someone who likes a short, to the point, helpful, informative book with God's love and peace shown--this is exactly what this is!
Fear is a hard thing that I believe everyone deals with at one point or another (or for me, most of the time). There can be peace though, and sometimes that's exactly what you need to be told. With this, help is at the tip of your fingers. Sometimes, help doesn't come with a prescription, and there are some outstanding methods you could be putting into use. I'm rating this 5 stars because I love this book; it speaks with compassion, and hands you the tools for success! Will you grab them?
These pages will stay in memory, and this book is going on my favorites shelf! Really, read this; it's a help!
"A person can build trust in God by knowing and trusting Him with the little things in life. Over time, trust will grow and it becomes easier to trust in God." (From page 38)
2 Thessalonians 3:16 - Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord [be] with you all. Jesus loves you!
A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear by Stanley Popovich is a very helpful book for those struggling with any sort of fear in their lives. It goes through a series of options to use when trying to manage your fear, those include basic mental approaches, non-resistant methods, as well as prayer and asking God for help. The author uses many illustrations and examples throughout the book to show how his suggestions would work in an everyday situation. They were all very well done, although I think I would have preferred less because they started to get overwhelming for me. This is the only negative I had while reading this book though, and other people may think differently about it than I do. I loved the distinct Christian message of the story, and commend the author for stressing the point of approaching God in prayer and asking Him for His help when it comes to fear. I loved that he pointed out that whatever God wants to happen will happen and that He's totally sovereign over your life. Fear can't control your life if God control's your life, this gives peace to any believer who is struggling with fear. The author also made it clear that all the approaches listed can be combined in anyway and that the process and results will be different for each person. He also recommends going to a psychologist along with or instead of some of these approaches. Everyone struggles with some sort of fear in their lives, I know I do, and that's why I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to change their lives and start by managing their fear. Also, when you read this book, write all the methods down and start applying each, or a few of them, whenever fear starts to take hold. It may not always work, but trying is better than worrying or giving up. DISCLOSURE: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was curious about this book since we have all feel fear in our lives. I wanted to see where Stanley Papovich was going with it. What I found is that he described me in many ways. I enjoyed seen the similitudes and the ways he helps the reader to take steps to become whole. Critical Thinking and Deductive Reasoning is one of the three steps that Stanley Papovich discusses throughout his book. Papovich said that imagination is a wonderful gift. For some, imagination has a dark side, generating terrifying thoughts and anxiety. It can distort thinking, feed fear, and cause worry by making it difficult to determine what is or isn’t real. When I was married for eight years, I remember waking my husband in the middle of the night to go to the restroom with me. I was afraid of going alone. It only lasted for a month but it was crazy to feel scared by my imagination. In his book Papovich covers “Understand what is causing the fear” and “A way to help manage fears.” You will be surprised how possible it is to manage our fears through the steps in this book. You will also find some referrals to places where you could find medical help if you need it. This book is not a replacement for treatment nor is intended to take the place of a professional diagnosis. However, it is a good start for you to manage some of your fears and give you the confidence to keep going until you can conquer many or all of your fears. I know that it could happen, because it happened to me.
A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Stanley Popovich presents his guide to overcoming fear and anxiety in the form of a common sense booklet accessible to all ages. Popovich explores three different approaches to managing fear: practicing general counseling techniques, asking for God's help, and using non-resistant methods, which, when combined, can serve as a powerful tool in fear management.
Popovich argues in favor of using critical thinking and deductive reasoning to manage fear, by first identifying its source and then determining its root cause. By establishing how rational a particular fear is, one can evolve solutions and options to manage it. Through numerous case studies throughout the book, Popovich shows how to overcome fear and anxiety step by step.
Providing not only his own insights into fear-filled situations, Popovich also relies upon experts in the field to express their thoughts about the problem. Father Howard Campbell, a systematic theology and divinity master's graduate, discusses how the disabling effects of fear can manifest as anxiety or a phobia, while Larry Sutton, a clinical psychologist with a Ph.D. in counselor education, reveals how to overcome anxiety in job seeking.
An ideal text for any graduate beset with the difficulty of finding work, A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear: Using Psychology, Christianity, and Non-Resistant Methods shows how to break down the otherwise formidable task of job searching into a series of relatively small, undaunting steps. Popovich shows how harnessing determination and commitment can lead to the motivation to succeed. Positive reinforcement and self-imagery are seen as a way through any crisis. This balanced text considers both the downside and the upside of imagination: the downside, as a source of fear, and the upside, as an aide in positive visualization exercises. Apart from considering the cognitive aspects of the techniques he explores, Popovich also explains the importance of physical exercise for the development of a positive mindset. He encourages the reader, when in doubt, to consider both mental health practitioners and other experts in the medical field.
Popovich shows how using non-resistant methods empowers the individual to reduce the strength of what might otherwise be overwhelming fear, thereby making it easier to manage. Making friends with God and developing a foundation of trust in the Lord is the third option that the author presents for the overcoming of fear. He explores the power of prayer both in and outside church, as well as the strengthening of will that comes from reading the Bible and other inspirational books. Holding a religious symbol can provide tangible comfort, too. Popovich also shows how Father Howard has been able to counsel those facing life-threatening illnesses to find the root cause of their fears.
Popovich closes A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear with a short list of organizations that can provide help and guidance for dealing with fear and other mental health issues, followed by some key Bible verses on how to deal with fear, as well as how to trust in God. He concludes by urging the reader to develop his or her personal strategy for coping with problems.
In brief, within relatively few pages, A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear: Using Psychology, Christianity, and Non-Resistant Methods packs a powerful punch, and is well worth the read.
A Layman’s Guide to Managing Fear by Stanley Popovich. Quoted from the book, “Rather, this book deals with more generalized fears that are common in daily life and presents a general overview of effective methods to combat those fears.” (Note the author is not a professional in Psychology or religious fields, however, has over 20 years experience in dealing with fear and anxiety).
Many interviews with mental health professionals have also been integrated into this book to create an enjoyable read offering encouragement and hope for those trapped by fear, panic, worry and anxiety. This book offers a well-rounded approach, several methods, to include asking God for help that gives insight and knowledge to readers.
With such chapters as: General Counseling Methods of Dealing with Fear, Non-Resistant Methods of Dealing with Fear, Asking for God’s Help to Manage Fear, Using all Three Methods at the Same Time to Manage Fear, and Getting the Help Needed to Manage Fear, the author includes Scripture references addressing fear, thus leading to trust in God as our help, strength and source. With an additional note section in the back, the author further encourages readers to write down their experiences and strategies to help manage their fear.
The authors hopes are to bring peace to those who suffer and knowledge for those who wish to manage everyday fear and anxiety through a set of methods that have proven to work: this is a layman’s guide to managing fear.
We written, easy to read and filled with insight this is a highly recommended book for anyone that is dealing with fear or anxiety. It would also make a wonderful gift for a family member, friend, co-worker or anyone else that is dealing with such issues.
Fear is an emotion that everyone is familiar with. But, not everyone knows how to deal with fear. An inspirational book by Stanley Popovich aims to provide direction for those who don’t want to be tied down by this universal foe.
Popovich’s book advocates a use of psychology, Christian faith, and non-resistant methods to show readers how to deal with common fears that they are experiencing. The many forms of fear are laid out and a three-pronged approach to managing this emotion is espoused. “Combining the General Counseling Techniques, the Non-Resistant Method approach, and the power of God to help overcome fear offers a broad spectrum for managing fear and anxiety,” Popovich writes.
Popovich’s writing style lives up to the title’s moniker of being layman-friendly. Each of the five chapters is divided into sub-sections and there are plenty of eye-catching bulleted lists, quotes, and practical advice throughout. The tone is not condescending, but informative, friendly, and genuinely helpful.
With more people paying attention to the often deadly effects of stress, anxiety, and depression — conditions in which fear is often a component, A Layman’s Guide To Managing Fear delivers a timely and much-needed message. At only fifty pages, it is concise and accessible, and concludes with a handy summary of the principles the reader will learn as well as a section for personal notes. Those who struggle with fear — and that’s all of us — are strongly encouraged to grab a copy of this book today for themselves and a few copies for others.
This book had multiple very clear and very easily understood modalities for managing fear Stress and Anxiety. Before I read the book I read all the one-star reviews from quote-unquote professionals who hated it. Sometimes the professionals do not know how to present in a concise manner real wisdom, like a caring soul that wants to share what works for them. I loved the book because it didn't work everything out, however it gave a lot of really great tools and resources so people could explore and figure things out for themselves. There is a lot of food for thought in this short, easily digestable book even if you do not suffer from anxiety or depression or anything like that. Five stars!

In brief, within relatively few pages, A Layman’s Guide to Managing Fear packs a powerful punch and is well worth the read. [Reviewer for BookPleasures.com]
Fear is a state of mind or emotion when we sense personal danger. Some people are more prepared than others to rationalize their fears. It can prevent us from harm by removing us from the situation, but can also cause unbearable, immobilizing anxiety. Someone living with fear may make unhealthy life choices because they are afraid that they are incapable of forming a well balanced decision.
The author, Stanley Popovich presents three main principles in this layman’s guide to managing fear. General Counseling Techniques encourages critical thinking and deductive reasoning. In order to make an informed confident choice, facts must be gathered first, and well researched. One must also factor in the ‘what if’ scenarios. Then with common sense reasoning determine what is most important. The reader is enlightened by the examples used of ‘John and Mary’s’ unpredictable situations.
Non-Resistant Methods of dealing with fear is more of a defensive approach. We all have ‘triggers’ that bring on anxiety and it is important to recognize them, not allowing ourselves to be ruled by them.
Christianity is a religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Belief in faith can provide a powerful foundation for problem solving.
FEAR is an introduction for readers who yearn to control their negative reactions. Stanley Popovich provides basic but exceptionally valuable steps in learning how to personally manage negative situations. Along with detailed stories the reader is provided with websites dealing with fear, twelve pertinent suggestions and several Biblical scriptures that provide support. As the title suggests, it may be used as a guide and empty pages are provided for your own notations.
Stanley Popovich has used his writing skills, analytical talents, interviews and diligent research in an attempt to educate readers. He was educated at Pennsylvania State University and has used these approaches in his own life.
I am no stranger to fear. In the past I had allowed myself to become controlled by it. Through reading, research and my physician’s advise I learned that there are many courses to take pertaining to the subject. I have completed several, adding a new confidence to my life. One is unable to enjoy a fulfilling life when fear is ever present. Reading this guide is a first step into the rest of your life. Highly Recommended. A Layman’s Guide to Managing Fear Using Psychology, Christianity and Non-resistant Methods by Stanley Popovich is a common-sense guide to facing the generalized fears that are typical in daily life, focusing especially on the fear of unemployment and stress of finding suitable work to provide for oneself and one’s family. The counseling techniques include critical thinking and deductive reasoning, taking small steps, using positive self-talk and imagery, and the benefits of physical exercise. Non-resistance is simply accepting that we all have fearful thoughts and choosing not to dwell on them. The Christian approach consists primarily of asking God’s help to manage fear, talking to a priest or minister, praying, and developing trust in God’s power and infinite wisdom. The book includes some basic resources, a summary, and a list of Bible verses addressing fear.
Popovich writes in a concise, straightforward manner making this a very quick read. The electronic version provided to me contained 51 pages total, 20 of which were the title page, dedication, summary, and reference materials. I was disappointed that the chapter on non-resistance contained barely a full page of text. In his “using all three methods at the same time” chapter, Popovich asserts that it doesn’t matter how “safe” we try to be, because nothing is going to “prevent God from allowing something bad to happen if that was His intention.” The Bible verses would be more helpful if they were incorporated in the main text along with specific examples of the assurances they provide. If you’re looking for depth and substance in dealing with fears that are not employment related, I suggest you look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a simple, calming text for ordinary fears, you may find this Layman’s Guide to be quite helpful.
A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear: Using Psychology Christianity and Non-Resistant Methods was an excellent, to the point, read. I enjoyed the way that the author wrote the book so that it would be easy to understand by all.
The content of the book was based on the fact that anxiety and fear is something that we generate within our brain. Often times it is irrational and not well thought through and I know from personal experience that this is true. I enjoyed the examples that the author used to describe how scenarios can play out in our head and how we fail to recognize how scenarios can play out okay if we would just let it happen.
The religious aspect within the book was also of interest to me because it is not often discussed in anxiety/fear books. I do believe that my friends that are non Christian would not want to read a book with any religious aspect to it, but I would still ask them to look past it in order to receive the overall message of the book. This book was a quick read, but don’t mistake it for lacking substance. It is something I would recommend to friends that battle anxiety and/or fear.
This book was well-written and had some good ideas for reducing fear/anxiety. I do feel that this book would be overlooked by those who are not Christians as it stresses praying and relying on God to rid oneself of fear. I am a Christian and appreciate the points but I do feel it would be rejected by those who do not believe. I would hate for them to miss out on a valuable resource. Stan does state that he is not a professional and that he is a layman who has studied and wrote from that perspective. This book is short and easily read in a short time period. Stan does tell readers that they need to seek professional help in cases of severe anxiety/symptoms. I received a free pdf copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
3 Triple Goddess Moons I was given a copy of this book to review for the tour. First, I have to start off by saying that although this book was not really for me (I'm not a big 'self-help' book kind of girl), I think that it will totally be helpful to others. Mr. Popovich has a very easy writing style to follow, and provides detailed and well researched information. I have in fact recommended this book to a friend already, and I'm sure that I will to others.
This book is good as a beginning to examine things that make us anxious and work with those feelings. It is simple enough to understand that you don't need a college education to use the tips in there. I would recommend this book as either a first step to understanding how to manage the things that frighten them or for people with mild anxiety. I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
