The brother's struggel for power has ended... Argoth is decimated... Tidal waves have turned canyons into rivers... Earthquakes leveled the cities... Dominaria is in ruins. Now the struggle for the war-torn world is to survive.
I read this a long time ago, when I was a bit younger and into the Magic, the game. Thus, I have good memories of this book - mages, spells, creatures of fiction - all things I was looking for. Plus the tie-in to the game, it was very cool. Great fan fiction, as far as I'm concerned.
An interesting collection of short stories in the aftermath of the Brothers' War. The stories are hit or miss, but there's enough quality here to be around 3.5 stars; add in the small details scattered throughout which make you feel like you are in the aftermath of the Brothers' War and you get a 4. My favorite was Bound in Shallows by Kevin T. Stein; it made you feel the devastation and desperation following the Brothers' War. For those who are invested in the lore of the Brothers' War, you'll also find appearances by stories centered around Loran, Feldon, and Gwenna.
An anthology of stories, so the quality varies a lot between them. Mostly, they are pretty decent, but there are some outliners: the story of Crucius is great, as it the one of Feldon. On the other hand, the stories of the goblin archeologist, or the orc one are pretty mediocre. All in all a fun read.
A very inconsistent collection. Two stories are excellent, one is good, and they others between passable and dreck. Worht picking up for fans of classic MTG lore, Feldon of the Third Path, and Squee.
As far as anthologies go, this book is excellent. Much better than the other multiple-author collections set in the world of Dominaria. These stories are written by top notch authors, many of whom you'll be familiar with from other Wizards of the Coast publications. Unlike the previous anthology, Rath and Storm, the stories here are not interconnected to make a larger story. Each story is completely independent, telling a short and simple (but nonetheless good) tale of individuals living in Dominaria. The only character in the book with any ties to the other MTG novels is Feldon (from The Brothers' War). Unlike a few of the other reviewers, I didn't think any one particular story stood out as being particularly wonderful or horrible. They were all enjoyable.
Each of the stories takes place on Dominaria either immediately after, or during, the last stages of the Brothers' War. These are mostly tales of people coping with life after the devastation of the final conflict between Urza and Mishra. Changing climate, politics, and landscapes provide a great setting for these stories. For the most part, they tend toward the tragic, with often predictable outcomes leaving characters with more than they bargained for. Read these stories to get a feel for the impact of the Brothers' War on common people's lives.
