There was a time when I purchased any book from Yourdon Press without bothering to exam the title or contents until I had it in my hands ready to read. Some were mundane but others were magical! This one was very high-grade magic—a simple idea that could restructure an entire company's IT. The current generation of programmers will look at it and say "What's new about this?" But at the time people just didn't do this. The excuses were legion and almost never substantive. Many were based on embarrassment and the then much stronger desire for geeks to stay in their caves (usually at the back). Yet when tried, the simple method uncovered a world of difference. Not to mention sins! What usually forced its adoption was the subsequent increase in bug-fixing and overall improvement. Not to mention the then non-obvious benefits that come when you improve (or even introduce) communications. Read the book with the eyes of a software recluse to simulate its original audience. Stay on the beach, ignore the big wave—nothing to see here, and watch the world undergo a sea change…
