Mark Schultz s Various Drawings series returns with this fourth dazzling collection. His best work over the last two years features continued experimentation with graphite, charcoal, brush and ink, and color-tinted images exemplifying his continued growth as an artist. Highlighting this compilation is Schultz s new Pulpette personal works. These four plates combine Mark s love for pulp magazine imagery combined with classic pin-up style art. Development sketches showcase his stages of production. Also included are preliminary pieces and a self-rejected sample for his upcoming illustrated novella, Storms at Sea as well as new Xenozoic Tales specialty drawings. Additional illustrations include recent commissions, spotlighted by an evocative Helen of Troy nude. Completing this volume is a Martian fantasy gatefold, sketchbook experimentations, and Schultz s contribution to Prince Valiant. Over fifty illustrations are featured in this volume--the majority not publicly shown until now.

About the author

Mark Schultz is an American writer and illustrator of books and comics. His most widely recognized work is the creator-owned comic book series Xenozoic Tales, which describes a post-apocalyptic world where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures coexist with humans. In 1993, Xenozoic Tales was adapted into an animated series titled Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and a video game of the same name. Schultz's other notable works include various Aliens comic book mini-series published by Dark Horse and a four-year run on the DC Comics series Superman: The Man of Steel. In 2004, Schultz took over the scripting duties of the Prince Valiant comic strip.

Am bekanntesten ist Mark Schultz wohl durch seine Xenozoic Tales geworden, einer postapokalyptischen Comic-Reihe, in der die Menschheit nach diversen Katastrophen sich die Erdoberfläche mit allerhand Sauriern teilen muss. Viele der Skizzen, die in den Various Drawings Vol. 4 veröffentlicht wurden, sind dieser Reihe zu verorten. Wie auch das Al Williamson Archive ist dieser Band im Flesk Verlag erschienen, der zahlreiche Skizzenbände herausragender Künstler der Comic-Szene veröffentlicht hat.
Schultz Pulp-Illustrationen lassen für Liebhaber dieses Genres keine Wünsche offen, die Zeichnungen sind liebevoll und detailversessen ausgeführt. Würde man einen Illustrator für die Werke von Edgar Rice Burroughs suchen, so wäre Schultz der richtige Mann.
Dieser Band dürfte jedem Liebhaber der Pulps Freude bereiten. Warum dann aber nur vier Sterne? Für den abgezogenen Stern hat nicht der Künstler einzustehen, sondern der Verlag. Der Band ist ziemlich zeitgleich mit dem bereits erwähnten Williamson-Archivband erschienen, und obwohl beide Ausgaben preislich vergleichbar sind, hat man die Skizzen von Williamson auf hochwertigem Glossy-Papier gedruckt, während hier einfaches Papier benutzt wurde. Möglicherweise hat man sich für dieses Papier entschieden, weil viele der Skizzen von Schultz mit Bleistift und Kohle gefertigt wurden und nicht den leichten Strich eines Williamson haben. Auf besserem Papier würde dennoch etliche Skizzen sicherlich deutlich brillanter wirken. Trotzdem eine klare Kaufempfehlung!
