This is getting better and better! Unsolved mysteries revealed, the “moon” is fabulous and a dream! And... we are lost?
Mr. Chaney has outdone himself writing one book every month and such dexterity! Congratulations! Impatient for the next installment.

Short, full of action, space Adventure, and the search for the Mythical planet Earth... We are starting to get some answers finally, mostly from the mechanical moon Titan and its sentient AI Athena. Jumping into the next book...

This book is a continuation of Jace and his crew's search for Earth and their neverending battle to stay two steps ahead of the enemy. Perfect series if you like a lot of action, space battles and laugh out loud humor. The audio narration (Publisher's Pack #2) is also really good.

I didn't get to hear from Siggy, my favorite AI as much in this book though. : (

I think this series ends with cliffhangers just to keep me reading. I was just thinking how I don't really like this series enough to want to continue it when it ends and I'm dying to know what happens next. *sigh* Oh well I guess I'm continuing on.

Notes:

Fun series as long as you don't poke too hard at "why". The characters are the best part.

During their last mission, Jace and the crew of The Renegade Star, stumbled across an all but abandoned vessel with ties to the long-forgotten planet of earth known as Titan. Now, they must undertake their most dangerous mission to date, in the hopes of unlocking the mysteries of the past and securing their own future. While the latest installment provides the butt-kicking scenes expected from this series, it offers a plethora of unexpected as well. The layers of mystery within the storyline begins to be peeled back to reveal shocking answers, as each puzzle piece is expertly clicked into place. Earth's ill-fated history is finally discovered, generating downright chills with the explanation bordering far more on plausible scenario, than science fiction. Also, Lex's origins are uncovered in a tragic, and deeply moving tale, that will pull at the most hardened of hearts. Characters continue to develop deeper, both singularly, and together, producing a pitch-perfect ensemble. Still action-packed with vivid fight scenes, RENEGADE MOON is a perfectly well-rounded read, who's unimaginable ending will keep its readers on pins and needles until the next!

This was a fun series! It was so amazing that I blasted through the series and forgot to write individual reviews. I'll be posting a review of the entire series on the page for book one, but I didn't want to keep my enthusiasm to myself. So, I’m sharing this ringing endorsement of the series, here, on the individual book pages. They were all epic in their own right, though there were times I thought I might have a heart attack during the action scenes! And can we talk about how awesome the narrator was? Wow, just wow! Overall, this series was a fun read and I was able to gloss over the near-death experiences!

My full review for this series doesn't fit, so read it here: https://jrhandley.com/2020/04/10/book...

My Overall Thoughts:
Okay, let’s get into the weeds on this one! I’ve organized my overall assessment by putting the stuff I didn’t like first so we can end on a high note. I also want to be clear that I really loved this series overall, it’s why I plowed through the audiobooks so quickly that I had to write a series review instead of an individual one for each of the six novels that make up The Renegade Star Series.

Alright, let’s rip off the band-aide and dive in. There were many parts that I wasn’t thrilled with in this series. First, the lack of details about the world was disheartening. I’m a guy who prefers all of the details, and I wasn’t given that in this series. This is a different type of book than I usually read, more pulp than anything, so some of that can generally be addressed by the fact that I’m not his ideal audience. However, I wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention that this was something I didn’t particularly like.

Another issue with the books was the profanity. I’m aware that the books description out a warning about the crude language. That normally bothers me, however, when you’re hooked on the fast-paced story, you want to listen every chance you get. I couldn’t do that if my kids were around, so this is more of an annoyance than anything because I went in with eyes wide open. Again, it wasn’t the profanity itself so much as the way that limited my ability to listen to the audiobooks. Luckily, this book is in the Kindle Unlimited program, and you can read it for free if you hit a patch where your rug rats won’t give you room to breathe.

I chose this book because the covers and the premise sounded entertaining, and I wasn’t disappointed. However, this book was very much a pulp novel and didn’t give me a lot to sink my teeth into. As many of you know, I’m the kind of reader that wants all the details in the novels I read. Some of this is just my own oddities, but I really like the little descriptions of the world that flush it out for me. I don’t just want to know that the character fired a blaster, I want the make and model. Again, some of this is just my preference, so this lack of detail was annoying, but not so much that I couldn’t keep reading because I obviously blazed through the series.

Another minor announcement I had was the lack of proper naval terminology. The main character calls the bulkheads walls and calls the decks a floor. I grew up in a Navy town, so hearing vessels using proper terminology always catches my attention. However, these traditions could change in the future, so this is really just nitpicking for the sake of my review.

My one major complaint about the story, aside from like details, was the character’s lack of reaction to killing. I’ve been in situations where you were required in someone else’s life, thank you Iraq, and there is always an emotional response to the action. I did not feel like the main character, Jace Hughes, ever felt remorse for the people he killed. It was just the thing he did, and then he’s callously shrugged it off. The combat veteran, this bugs me, but I’m sure most readers would never notice this.

Alright, now let’s talk about the happy things! One of the things that I liked about the series was the way characters grew as the story developed across the 13 novels. This is an area where the author grew as a creator, and it showed. I can’t really say anything else about the specific category because that would give spoilers, but trust me, it’s worth waiting for the big reveal later in the series.

Another area that struck me with this series was the audio narration. I loved this audiobook, Luke Daniels gave one of his trademarked top-notch performances. My only complaint in this arena was the way the main character socked on hard candy. However, this was more about the author’s characterization and how it translated to audiobooks, but it was about Luke’s performance. However, if especially noticeable in the morning and audiobook format. Despite that one minor complaint, this audiobook was a rollicking good adventure! Seriously, if you weren’t already hooked on Luke, this book would get you there! This was one of the many areas where this series really shined for me.

What did shine was the amazing premise of this book series. This definitely hit on all of the tropes that I love about science fiction, but not in a way that felt derivative. He carried it out in a way that somehow became uniquely his own thing. I found shades of the short-lived Firefly television show and the anime Outlaw Star that inspired it. There was also a Star Wars meets Indiana Jones element to this series, which kept you glued to the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. Oh, and some of the reviewers called the series a mash-up of Andromeda and Battlestar Galactica. I agreed with them, though I didn’t see it at first. Once I read the review, the comparison was obvious!

If I haven’t said it enough, I REALLY loved the basic premise of this series. The concept of a grand adventure, trying to solve the mysteries of the universe, struck the right chord for me. It was very much. The Da Vinci Code in space, which I really liked. The fact that it was written in first person made you much more connected to the adventure, which I really appreciated. All of this combined, and you end up with a series of books that are a lot of fun to read. Seriously, it’s pulpy popcorn comfort food. Except you won’t regret eating it, because it’s calorie-free.

One of the overarching themes of the series that I enjoyed was the classic story of good versus evil. This was your typical David versus Goliath story except you had blaster since the slingshots. While the main character wasn’t quite the everyman, he was close enough that you ended up rooting for him and cheering as the bad guys get taken down a peg or two. There’s a Union officer whose face you want to smash in, but luckily Jace wants to do the same thing, and so you get a vicarious thrill of living for him. Isn’t that why we read fiction in the first place?

Oh, and I really loved the way Chaney explained his science of faster than light travel (FTL). It had just the right amount of Handwavium to keep me happy. Because of the structure of the story, he never felt let down by the lack of a more detailed explanation of how the science works. Instead, you have a character who doesn’t know and so can’t tell you. This is one of the beauties of the first-person narration done right!

Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed the more direct language that the author chose to use. It had a very Tom Clancy-esq vibe with simple words that avoided the tendency towards a pretentious use of big words, whether they were needed or not. It made it possible for Luke Daniels to give the stellar performance that he did with his narration, which I obviously loved. I know this style of writing isn’t for everyone, but it was something that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I wish I could gush more about the series, but I can’t think of ways to do this justice without giving spoilers. So… have I hinted that I enjoyed this universe yet? Good, I want it to be obvious! So, to wrap this bad boy up, I loved this series. Each one of these novels was at least 75,000 words long, about what you expect from the genre. Despite the length, each book felt like a quick read. If you didn’t know how long each novel was, you could almost imagine them as short stories. This is because they were so engrossing that the reader loses track of time while they temporarily live in the story. The author definitely made me want more from this universe, and I’ll definitely be reading the follow-on series that are already available.

In conclusion, I was hooked from the first page/minute! JN Chaney wove the action into this fun space opera romp that made me lose track of time. Basically, he had me hooked from the beginning and kept it going throughout the whole series. These are books that I would happily recommend, and an author I will definitely read again. While I don’t see myself diving more into the pulp side of the house, I don’t regret swimming in this pool of awesomesauce! Buy these novels! But hey, it’s easy to spend someone else’s money! I give these books a 5 out of 5 grenades!

This series is a more lighthearted space adventure series. The main character has a lot of Han Solo in him. In this new book they are now traveling with the mysterious AI headed for earth while still being chased by the authorities. Its pretty clear that books 3 and 4 are one book broken into two so I will base my final review once I finish book 4.

Deception & intrigue

It’s quite the motley crew that Jace has collected. We see half truths, deception, and lots of intriguing hints sprinkled around. There’s a lot more to the universe and humanity’s past than they realise. Another exciting story in this series.

I like this series and this third book doesn’t disappoint. I’m really interested in seeing where this series goes. We were originally aboard the Renegade Star with Captain Jace Hughes, Renegade. While Jace would describe himself as a murderous, thieving rogue, he’s not all that he thinks he is. He’s really a good guy trying very hard to be very bad. But, now things have gotten complicated. He originally was supposed to just transport a Nun and a some cargo from Point A to Point B. He would have gotten paid a considerable sum, but then he found out that the Nun was wanted by the Union and her cargo turned out to be a very young girl. Since you’ve probably read the first two books, you know the story up to now, so I won’t cover the whole thing. Just say that Jace isn’t a mean as he things he is.

Now, they are being pursued by both the Union and the Sarkonians. Fortunately, the Star Renegade found a moon that was actually an ancient starship. It had been dormant for almost 2000 years, but Jace and his crew managed to get it jump-started when they triggered a series of events on the planet the moon was circling. Now they have found out that this ancient starship is one huge ship, but it contains no crew other than a very, very intelligent A.I.

So, Jace takes this opportunity to rest his crew and get some very needed supplies for his ship, the Star Renegade, which sits in on of the huge bays of the Titan. He soon finds out that this ship is part of his hunt for the origin of human or Earth. It came from there according to the A.I. now called Athena. She invites Jace and his crew to stay aboard the Titan and make the journey back to Earth with her.

The only probably is that the Titan is not a full capacity and needs to re-new it’s core. That part is only held in a secure facility on a Union planet, a place where Jace desperately wants to avoid. Yet, he has no choice. With the Union armada and the Sarkonians both on his tail, he must get the Titan fully operational or they will be captured and killed pretty darn quickly.

As I said, I really like this story and the characters are different enough to make it interesting. I kind of don’t like some of the language that Jace uses even in the presence of Lex, the very young girl. I think he over uses a four letter word when it’s not really necessary. Jace isn’t illiterate. or uneducated, so I know he has a better command of the English language and I wish the author would make use of it. Some situations just don’t need cuss words to get your point across. Again, this just me, but we all know that Jace isn’t really the cutthroat villain that he things he is, so over time, the author should tone down his language.

I don’t know the name of the next book, but it’s promised sometime early 2018. I know I’ll be looking for it and I recommend you do also.

They just keep getting better! I have never been a "space" genre fan really, but this one just grips me! So much action, with fantastic and likable characters! I gobble these books up so fast it's almost disappointing, because then I am left longing for the next. I definitely see myself going back and enjoying this series again after it is complete.
Intense and non stop action, that leaves you laughing and your heart racing without a minute to blink! I love the pace, even on their "down time" there is never a dull moment. At the end of each book you are left so satisfied with what you read, and completely anxious for what is still to come. Chaney is definitely shining with this series! But then again, I have thoroughly enjoyed every book he has written.

Still goofy

The madness continues and I wonder if it ever ends. The crew continues to do its crew thing and the pursuers continue to pursue. The characters continue to be the characters and the science continues to be silly.

The story maintains the same lunatic pace and doesn't disappoint in that regard. Unfortunately there's a spoof and there's silly. It was fun but it's boring to me.

Attack craft are patrolling a light year away from a star. Hope there's a base nearby. The carrier hull can be breached and peeled back by an attack launched by two small ships. A Super ray can destroy a carrier's interior and only affect its propulsion. The list goes on but after a little while, it becomes too much. I'm saying good bye to this goofy series.

I cannot get enough of Jace!!! He's funny, cheeky, a bit rough around the edges, but always has a good heart. He's my favorite character that Chaney has created and I'm loving him more and more as his past is slowly being revealed. Lex took a bit of a backseat in this part of the story, but wasn't left out completely. Also, isn't it time for Abigail's backstory as well?! I'm super fascinated by the new developments and need to know what happens next! And the big question: Do they ever make it to Earth?!!!!!

Jace and his crew have fought their way to the end of the map. The end is definitely not Earth. The only sign of possible life is a dome bubble with breathable air in the center of a toxic planet. When Lex touches a wall in the domed building a chain reaction begins to happen that will send our team off on another adventure that may get them killed but will answer the mystery of Earth. This book fills in some backstory of why Jace chose the life he did. We also get introduced to some new characters and continue to get to know the old ones. Still really excited about this series.

I went through the first couple of books in this series three years ago and barely remembered any of the characters or overarching story. While often enough when this happens with series, memories quickly come flooding back when I pick up a new installment, in this case I probably would have been well advised to get in a re-read before continuing. There was enough going on to keep me sort of entertained, but I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more if I'd had more of an idea of who all these people were and what they were up to... Oh well.

What if the good guys got a super-Death Star to fight against Darth Vader but had had to break into a top security secret laboratory that only the newest member of the crew knew about? What if they pulled off the heist by simply walking in, showing their ID, taking the top scientist hostage and escaping with only that newest crew member dying from a gunshot wound? What if that same crew member was brought back to life because “science”? What if the retrieved power core from 2,000 (200,000? I forget) years ago fits perfectly into their Death Star’s failing energy system? What if they randomly forgot they locked the super scientist up in a crew cabin on their transport shuttle and went dogfighting and nobody ever mentions it?

Yeah, that be this book.

An entertaining series.

I'm not going into any details about the book. If you aren't interested in it by now you aren't going to be convinced to read it by a few of my words. I will say I prefer to read a series. If I get beyond a few pages of the first book I finish the book. For me to get this far into a series with plans to continue i have to say the author has MANAGED to KEEP me INTERESTED. I recommend that you read this series.

So so

The book and the series up to book 3 are readable, but I found them rather flat. The characters and the situations they found themselves in came off as rather cliche. I never felt the characters were in a situation they couldn’t get out of, the solution was always miraculously at hand. It just became tedious and I found myself not really caring how the series ended so I stopped after book three. But it’s not the worst series, so three stars.

What’s Next

Another good read in the Renegade Star series. In this book many more questions are answered, especially those about Lex’s origins and what happened on Earth. The new shop Titan shows it’s true offensive powers and goes toe to toe against an overwhelming force. The book leaves on a real cliff hanger, much different than the previous two endings, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Very entertaining

I have to say that this is one of the most entertaining series I have read. It doesn’t really follow the cookie cutter aspect of most space operas. The hero? Is a really interesting characters I’ve run across and Chaney intertwines the perfect amount of levity and action. On to the next book.

Renegade Moon. JN Chaney

Book three in this series! Captain Jace and his crew are at odds with the entire universe. Wanted felons, their only means of escape, or better yet freedom is to find the elusive planet Earth. But, does it really exist? This is a highly charged action thriller extraordinaire. Enjoyed immensely!

JNC. has. penned the third novel in the Renegade series. The threesome have avoided two warrior peoples and escaped to SOL. They discover TItan and use it for a home base. The author stated that these novels are full of action at all levels. He has lived up to his own pronouncement. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
