Freedom's Frame

Rate this book
Imagine all the pictures that capture what you feel is best about America. Now think of the frame that holds each picture in place. Our Founding Fathers designed the portrait of America's freedom within a beautiful framework-Freedom's Frame. That framework has resulted in the most successful nation in history. If the frame goes, your picture goes with it...your dreams, your family, your community, your church, your freedom. Each of us has a duty to preserve Freedom's Frame for future generations, and one of the ways that we do that is by diligently studying the principles that are nation was built on, allowing us to better defend them.

History can be a slippery thing. At the same time, if we do not know our history, it is hard to define where we are, and impossible to state accurately how we got here.

Rick Green does us all a great service by doing his best to place our country's origin story in the environment where it all began. There is a good deal of revisionist history in the world today. There is, admittedly, some whitewashing that goes on. At the same time, there is also unjustified tar and feathering going on. This has little to do with actual history and far more to do with current political and social agendas.

It is not a disservice to our country, nor its history, to admit and put on display its early failings. It is dishonest, however, to judge its origins with contemporary standards. It is wrong to view, for example, the treatment of slaves and women 250 years ago with the obviously more enlightened view we enjoy today. This is not a justification of errors of the past, but does allow more understanding and honest discussion of why things were the way they were.

You cannot know truly where you are if you do not understand where you were. The slavery question, which now again seems to loom so large, was asked and discussed differently then. A truly honest discussion of this horrible issue does not actually start with the founding of America, but centuries before with the Golden Trade of the Moors, and the actions of African nations enslaving their brother to sell outside of their own continent. It should also recognize, for example that not only blacks were slaves, but so were Jews (for several thousand years) and nations of white people whose lives were so cursed with slavery that this became the very way in which they were identified: The Slavic peoples.

America is not founded on slavery. It is not founded on secularism. It was founded on ideals and a longing for a better world. It was founded on Judeo-Christian ideals and morals. This is not an issue of the separation of Church and State. A purely secular society (if one could ever exist) has a difficult, if not impossible, task of justifying its moral choices.

There is more to be proud of than not in our country and its history. It is a nation founded on soaring ideals and principals. Its history has been an attempt to live up to those ideals. While we have not always succeeded, we have never abandoned them entirely. We must keep in mind, however, that this means we must maintain constant vigilance and be unflagging in our efforts . To do less would be to dishonor our heritage.

This book is enhanced with five appendices (not including the end notes)with notes on ways to teach and convey the real messages left by our founding fathers, as well as the bedrock documents of the Constitution itself (including all of the amendments) and the Declaration of Independence. It is sad to note that these documents are not actually taught in our schools anymore because of a fear of mixing state and religion. This is a loss to us all and to future generations.

We need to bring back the foundations of our nation in teaching out children. We cannot live up to ideals that go unstated and unknown. How may we aspire to greatness if the soaring ideals of our founding are never made known?

The suggestions in this book should be incorporated into history and civic classes throughout the nation.

I have changed. There was a time when I would have devoured this book along with a lot of political biographies but I have found my appetite for such things has disappeared. I keep wanting to shout that we should be pouring our life it to reaching people with the saving gospel of Christ, not our political agenda. Yet, I know that God has called some people like Rick Green to do what he is doing.
