Little Essays Toward Truth
In Little Essays Toward Truth, Aleister Crowley examines sixteen concepts fundamental to human existence in the light of the Holy Qabalah. These essays are a philosophical tour de force, in which he discusses, each in its turn, various of the powers, attributes and experiences that go to make up Man. It’s one of Crowley’s most mature works, and since it is addressed to the intelligent sceptic, rather than the specialist, it forms a lucid introduction to the Path of the Wise. This edition includes a new Forword, diagram, glossary, bibliography and index.

Aleister Crowley

A prolific writer, Crowley published extensively throughout his life.
Born Edward Alexander Crowley in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, he was raised in a wealthy family adhering to the fundamentalist Christian Plymouth Brethren faith. Crowley rejected his religious upbringing, developing an interest in Western esotericism. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, focusing on mountaineering and poetry, and published several works during this period. In 1898, he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, receiving training in ceremonial magic from Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and Allan Bennett. His travels took him to Mexico for mountaineering with Oscar Eckenstein and to India, where he studied Hindu and Buddhist practices.
In 1904, during a honeymoon in Cairo with his wife Rose Edith Kelly, Crowley claimed to have received "The Book of the Law" from a supernatural entity named Aiwass. This text became the foundation of Thelema, announcing the onset of the Æon of Horus and introducing the central tenet: "Do what thou wilt." Crowley emphasized that individuals should align with their True Will through ceremonial magic.
After an unsuccessful expedition to Kanchenjunga in 1905 and further travels in India and China, Crowley returned to Britain. There, he co-founded the esoteric order A∴A∴ with George Cecil Jones in 1907 to promote Thelema. In 1912, he joined the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), eventually leading its British branch and reformulating it according to Thelemic principles. Crowley spent World War I in the United States, engaging in painting and writing pro-German propaganda, which biographers later suggested was a cover for British intelligence activities.
In 1920, Crowley established the Abbey of Thelema, a religious commune in Cefalù, Sicily. His libertine lifestyle attracted negative attention from the British press, leading to his expulsion by the Italian government in 1923. He spent subsequent years in France, Germany, and England, continuing to promote Thelema until his death in 1947.
Crowley's notoriety stemmed from his recreational drug use, bisexuality, and criticism of societal norms. Despite controversy, he significantly influenced Western esotericism and the 1960s counterculture, and remains a central figure in Thelema.

I'd read a few of these essays previously, but this was my first full and serious pass through the whole set, engaged in the context of a "Reading and Discussion" series at Blazing Star Oasis. Having done so, my conclusion is that this "Commentary" on the
Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster
is not to be read; it is to be studied. As the author himself states in the final essay, "Truth":
This quote also gives a sense of the convoluted, run-on style of the writing throughout, and the suggested method of engaging and parsing the compound-complex, qabalistic confusion contained herein. "The slow hand penetrates the shield," as has been said elsewhere, and one's understanding is likely to benefit greatly from a deliberate and measured approach, especially in discussion with like-minded students, as in a book group for example. The labor is likely to be well repaid.

I beseech you earnestly, dear Brethren, to grapple manfully as mighty wrestlers with the ideas in these Little Essays: to understand them.... Every time I read this damn little thing I gain something new. Rereading Crowley is nothing out of the ordinary but this little gem right here will probably be something I reread more often than others

This book and Diary of a Drug Fiend, I think are the best books to start with for anyone interested in Crowley and his Art. Little Essays Toward Truth is a collection of related essays that outline a great many of Crowley's ideas in a much more straight-forward manner than most (if not all) of his other esoterica, which can certainly be a great aid to anyone who is curious about his ideas and philosophies.

Hned na začátku jsem opět pochopil, že Crowley to servíruje (jako vždy), ale ne jako dortík (nebo štrúdl -Hans Landa) se šlehačkou (ačkoliv je velmi k věci, což cením, stejně rád to mám u Junga, ten no bullshit a řeknou to, jak to vidí a zcela věří, že je a mají to čím podepřít a intelekt k tomu). Není to prostě vaše soft-porno v neděli odpoledne, páni a dámové. Vzpomněl jsem si na Duitsovu závěrečnou větu z 'Démonického vědomí', kde psal: "Význam je vždy transparentní." A nejinak je tomu u tohohle Crowleyho textu, kde se hned od začátku pouští do definice člověka skrze kabalistické pojetí (protože abhidhamma je pro naše evropské mozky prostě m_o_c) a hned od začátku jde opět víc "cítit" než "definovat". A myslím si, že s tímhle pojetím tak děsně "cítím pod povrchem" (protože to je pravda) a tak i často zápasím, když se snažím něco lidem vysvětlit, vyjádřit a říkám si, tenhle člověk tady (Crowley) popisuje, jak komplikovaný je život a chápe to a ví, zná jeho části, úskalí (a bavilo mě i to pojetí vědy, fyziky, chemie - ve kterých "není žádná exaktní pravda"), zatímco ostatní jsou vlastně jen utopení ve svých povrchních denních záležitostech (a rádoby zdánlivé srozumitelnosti, protože jinak ti lidi nic nepochopí - musíte to zjednodušit, jako když řeknete "Bůh je starej dědek na nebesích" "Ahaaa"), co vás vlastně mají jenom rozptýlit. Nemám rád, když lidi nakládají s životem a definicemi, ve kterých se naučili žít, jako s pevně danými soubory pravidel. Život takhle prostě nefunguje (a tady to opět musíte víc cítit, než chápat). Někdy je to takhle, někdy je to onak, někdy je to obojí a někdy nic z toho a taková je pravda... tak jak můžeš tvrdit, že je něco každý den stejně? Tohle zakotvení většinou sleduji ve lživých společenských fixacích a vztazích, vztahové politice, kde si každej jen snaží ukrojit co nejvíc a budovat u toho současně dojem pro společnost, ale i klam sám vůči sobě i partnerovi, že je skromný a dělá to z ctnostných záměrů, tohle všechno se pak v něm akumuluje (stejně jako třeba i potlačované emoce - můj případ) a pak, podle mě, má vliv na něco, čemu sám sobě říkám "kosmický balanc" ale můžete si to přeložit asi jako "karmu". Opět se ale musím vracet ke svým oblíbeným "echo chambers" (Dennis - 'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) aneb "dnešní generace není etičtější, pouze tak chce být vnímána" a to je přesně ten problém - věk contentu nutí každého do té online fake sebeprezentace, kde to vlastně vše jen maximálně klouže po povrchu a je jen koloběh, kde se lidi vzájemně donekonečna zneužívají a všechny emoce jsou jen tenká poleva, která schovává ten dort.
"Je stejně nežádoucí, jako i nemožné, aby si paměť uchovala vzpomínky na všechny zažité dojmy. S lidmi, kteří tvrdí, že takovou paměť mají se setkáváme leda v blázinci." A řekl bych, že tohle se váže na všechny aspekty čehokoliv, čím se osoba může chlubit, ukazovat svoje barevné peří. Nemusí to být ani tak doslovně v otázce paměti, ale snaha upoutat pozornost ostatních, ať už aktivně či pasivně, je tímhle věkem nasáklá, to lživé trendy chlubení, kdy každej řekne cokoliv, co jen trochu zavětří, že chcete slyšet - a opět "echo chambers". Ale to se dotýkám jen pár okrajových myšlenek. Crowley tu jde neskutečně hluboko a přitom nemá potřebu se rozepisovat (koukejte na mě - teď, samý bla bla bla), možná ale i odtud současně (záměrně?) matoucí/mlžící (aby lidi přitáhl do Thelémy? / vyfiltroval hňupy, co budou nadávat, že si mysleli, že tohle je příručka o tom, jak se naučit mluvit pravdu? / chvílemi jsem si i říkal, což mám ostatně od začátku s ním, že mě jen tahá za nos a taky si buduje jakousi image, ale bohužel tu spousta věcí dává častěji instinktivní smysl, například zde zmíněná Magická paměť, podobné oproštění od reality, nebo "záblesky odjinud", z minulého života, nebo pocit deja vu, zrovna dnes jsem se tak zahleděl a pomalu skoro začal cestovat jinam... co chci říct je, spousta věcí tu sedí a je založená na hlubších praktikách a starých učeních, lásce a vlastně fakt, že Crowley vůbec není o tom, jakou nálepku má obecně, i když to žádnej svatoušek nebyl, spíš mi připadal jako kdyby byl obětí cancer-culture (before cc) a tím myslím cancel, ale omylem, nebo podvědomě, jsem to napsal jako cancer... zvláštná náhoda, ale němyslím si), takže je to neskutečně podnětné čtení. Je to koneckonců jeho pozdní tvorba. A musím uznat, že k tomuhle se, podobně jako k jeho dalším textům, určitě vrátím. Opravdu nelze přehlížet magnetizující řádky o Paměti nebo Smutku, které se ale vůbec nepachtí v nějaké sentimentalitě nebo melancholii, jako spíš v "nepochopení nástroje". Není divu, že jsem u reakcí četl tu a tam, že se k tomu musí jedinec vrátit. Překladatelské poznámky dávají do kontextu drobné "chyby" a mnohdy mě překvapuje s jakou až mravenčí, editorskou (a celkově) prací se Sol Noctis věnuje speciálně Crowleymu, jeho knihy jsou vždy krásně provedené. Ta látka a sazba mi připomíná další nejmenovaný svazek dalšího nenáviděného (ale tenhle je víc), co mám v knihovně. Crowley, obdobně jako Nietzsche, svoje "filozofování" okořenil i svým živelným lyricismem, koneckonců byl také básník.

Skvělé kapitoly, ale opět, i když tohle Crowley psal, jak sám v jeden moment narážel, pro nooby, krátká knížka vyžaduje i tak hlubší znalosti v oblasti kabaly ("Tradice tajné moudrosti Hebrejců") a východní filozofie. Kresba Stromu života na předsádkách je luxusní. Definitivně (a opět) něco, k čemu se je třeba vrátit později, co je stejně jako 'Kniha zákona' nebo 'Kniha lží' obtížné jen tak, bez spodního prádla, zpracovat, sám, zdá se, že spousta z okultní (hlubší) duchovní tradice je opravdu závislá na nejen studiu, ale i na praktických zkušenostech s dalšími zasvěcenými a neustálém, cyklickém, tématickém ponoru.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law
‘Little Essays Towards Truth’ is a truly wonderful and engaging Crowley book. Each of his essays are only a few pages long but they are so fascinating and full of meaning one could discuss them for hours. I’ve read many of Crowley’s works the past few years and this little book is definitely one of my favourites and one of his best. Give it a read, you won’t regret it.

First off, this edition has a number of typos. I don't know if that's true for all of them, as they may all be using the same source, but in this case, they increased my rate of pausing as I had to figure them out. Also, there are several inferences to a diagram of the Tree of Life, which does not actually appear in this edition.
The essays themselves probably deserve multiple readings. On my single read-through, there were moments of insight, and moments of humor, but a lot of it was simply obscure. The language itself isn't too difficult, but I felt a lot of the concepts were *just* beyond my current comprehension. I felt that I *almost* got most of it.
It's a quick read, though, and worth coming back to at a later date.
