"Easter Island ia a book in which S&E editors, through its brand NicEye, documents one of Chile´s most famous World Heritage sites declared by UNESCO. In this book, we review the history of an island located in the middle of the South Pacific, halfway between Continental Chile and Rapa Nui. Named as such by its natives, it has become famous all over the world not only for its unique location and geography, but also for the existence of almost one thousand gigantic sculptures that can be found all over the island; carved out of rock and spanning centuries, they are called Moais."
2023 bk 259. Easter Island - I remember a story in my 5th grade reader about this island far from others with a mysterious birdman cult. Through the years I've seen a few documentaries and seen references in museums about the Island. It wasn't until I began participating in virtual walking challenges this year and chose the Easter Island Challenge that my curiousity was really roused. The 'postcards' and 'local spot' features I was sent made me curious enough to look for a book and I settled on Soza's Easter Island/Rapa Nui. Soza has done an excellent job of pulling together the myths of the local people, the written histories (since the 17th/18th century) and combined them with glorious photographs. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who needs an introduction to Rapa Nui and the history of its peoples and plants. Well done!
