This volume is very character driven with a clear focus on specific dynamics. It's always a fun time when Eri makes a rare appearance. The relationship between Ran's parents is as good as ever, with their back and forth bickering lending to some wonderful comedic moments. The pairing of Takagi and Sato is also further explored here. Jodie Starling makes her first important appearance and it's done quite well. There's a nice air of mystery around her and it makes for an interesting 'good guy or bad guy' conundrum for first time readers. The cases themselves are pretty standard for Case Closed, and if you've made it this far in chronological order, you know what to expect by now.

*Note this volume ends in a cliffhanger!

I think the first case being a little lackluster of a start for me sort of dragged along the rest of the volume, but the cases in general were still really good! I was sitting at 4/5 but the last one with the kids gave it the extra boost to 5/5. Sometimes I feel like I need to be in the right mood to read these x'D

Case 1: Richard, Rachel, and Conan are enjoying their time at a hotel resort, when surprise, Richard's ex-wife makes an appearance. Things go about how you'd expect, up until there's a murder, and Richard is the only one at the scene of the crime.

Normally locked rooms are fun cases for me, but I guess because we've been here before, and obviously Richard didn't do it, this one wasn't as gripping for me. Though I did enjoy the twist of Eri being the one solving the case. Her working together with Conan was cute. I also thought it was a neat idea to have the murder plan be changed due to the unexpected element of Richard being there.

Case 2: Amy witnesses a strange man walk down the street just as buildings get set ablaze. The Detective Kids reach out to the police to find and stop the serial arsonist. Simultaneously, Sato is in a rush to find her father's killer before the statute of limitations runs out.

I liked the intricacies of this one and how the characters all pieced together their own parts and team-worked it in the end--well, in a way, haha. The story had a time limit, with Sato's father's killer, and Takagi's kidnapping. I loved the scene with Sato where she was great in leading the criminal along as the clock ticked closer and closer to midnight. The artwork with all the fire and smoke in this was also brilliant. Lots of great suspense here! And some twists :o

Case 3: Rachel, Serena, and Conan while out enjoying some free time run into their English teacher from school at a game center. Getting caught up in the fun of the games (and their teacher's obsession with them, haha), they're shocked when one of the gamers there ends up murdered.

Okay but having the American be good at a shooting game is hilarious xD Megure also immediately jumping at the opportunity to show off his English skills was very cute and funny. And the little touch of each chapter title having English furigana was cute! The case itself was an interesting one, with the victim being killed in front of a crowd. The method of murder was unique and interesting too. Though a little lucky on one of the clues ^^; But that's often how it goes, haha.

This case introduces Jodie, who seems to have more going on than meets the eye. I don't recall her on my first read-through many years ago, so I'm excited to see where this goes!

Case 4: The Detective Kids and Dr. Agasa are out in the woods on a mushroom foraging trip. Though Genta's passion for the hunt separates him from the group. They split up searching for him, with Ai and Mitsuhiko stumbling across a dead body, with the shooter right on their trail.

Really loved this one! Sometimes the kids can be hit or miss for me, but this one was great. I loved the fresh outdoor environment, after being in the city for the bulk of the volume, and I loved Ai getting some time to shine. There is definitely some suspense here on who the killer is as they walk amongst the group. We'll have to find out next volume though on who-dun-it!

A quick and enjoyable read. I wouldn't recommend taking this series as a whole too seriously, but if you've made it this far I'm assuming you haven't

I really really liked the first case in this volume! It was nice to see a twist where the "great detective" was the suspect. I've seen it a couple of times in other crime/detective media, where someone on the team is put in a situation where they the suspect, and then the rest of the team has to work to get them out of trouble. In this case, it was a bit different from that. Here we have Shinichi trying to do what he usually does, but then there's the competent Eri (lawyer, kind of wife to Mouri, and mom to Ran), who completely takes over. It was kind of nice to see.
I also mostly enjoyed the second case, but it was weaker than the first case. It felt like two very different cases smashed together, and it didn't quite work.
Lastly, I'm not completely sold on the last case. When a case is heavy on the use of the kid group of characters it's a bit of a 50/50 chance whether I like it or not.

In this volume of Case Closed Detective Moore is the prime suspect in a case and his best hope of staying out of jail is his estranged wife!?! Can everyone work together to keep Detective Moore on the right side of the law? The next case involves murder's that span almost 50 years!!! This is a case passed down from a father (unsolved) to his daughter. Arson seems to be connecting with the murders and the deadline on the statute of limitations is looming ever so close as well. This story seemed very methodical and was a treat to read! The final full story of this volume involves a murder at the arcade. It was a little dryer than I wanted it to be, as a video game fan myself, but still it worked well enough. The cliff-hanger story involves the Junior Detectives. I feel more details are better to give in the next chapter. Good stuff in this volume!

Sato & Takagi FINALLY!

1. the first case was flipping hilarious from beginning till end, the fact that eva (ran’s mom) was involved i was like “YES!”; having moor being the main suspect was a nice change of pace!
2. i loved how in the end Eva (Ran’s mom) recorded mouri’s voice telling her to get back together.
3. the second case (18yearsago) was my top fav; first and foremost my OTP (Sato & takagi)
4. i love how takagi did not shoot the handcuffs since they belonged to sati’s father and i love how there was a resemblance (hence the horoscope and the lucky day)
5. and when Takagi was in the fire i was like NOOOOOOO
6. and sato though he was still there and she screamed his name omg *tears*
7. all in all; lovely volume
8. more mangacaps for Sato & Takagi

case 1: Conan, Ran ansd Kogoro go on a triüp and meet Ran´s mum Eri. One drink leads to the next and Kogoro ends up being a murder suspect. The one who solves the case is not Conan this time...
case 2: Sato´s father was killed on duty years ago. Maybe even though the case expired the murder could be found.
case 3: someone is killed in the middle of a video game battle. But how did the murder do it while noone was there in the moment his avatar stopped moving. And who is this new English teacher in Ran´s class?

First, at a resort, Mori is framed for murder and must rely on his estranged wife Eri (and Conan) to get out of it. Next, with the junior Detective League, Conan is on the hunt for a serial arsonist and Detective Sato's father's killer - one of whom has captured Detective Wataru Takagi. Then Conan solves a case of a gamer being murdered in a busy arcade. Finally, we start the story of the Junior Detectives hunting for mushrooms and coming into hunters, one of whom is a murderer...

The chapters with Eri, Ran's mother, are absolutely fascinating! The women are portrayed as not only beautiful and alluring, but also incredibly talented. Can you even imagine the possibility of Goro and Eri rekindling their romance? And those tricky chapters with Jodie in the game room - who could forget the suspenseful moment when she finally speaks to someone about someone she calls a "rotten apple". It's all so thrilling!
The last chapter ends with a tense cliffhanger!

A suivre ! ^^

Aoyama Gosho; DETECTIVE CONAN [Meitantei Conan #27]

e/read online; genre: { manga, mystery, shounen }; shelves: |comics, GN, manga, manhua, manhwa|

General Synopsis:
As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻

V.27, includes Files 264 - 273

DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.

Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.

Characters in this volume:

Personal Opinion:
#1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.

#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!

In this book, we get back to the murders - one at a hotel, one at the scene of an arson, one in an arcade and one in the hunting grounds of a forest.

The first story in this book, I love because it really shines a spotlight on the relationship between Mouri and his estranged wife Eri (Ran's mom). They fight a lot, and you can definitely see why they're split up - especially when Mouri gets totally drunk and flirts with one of Eri's coworkers. But when that coworker ends up dead and Mouri's found asleep in the room with her, we really see how much they trust and care about one another, and that scene at the end... oh man, Mouri, you're breaking my heart. :)

In the next case, we get another story with detectives Sato and Takagi, as the police are on the trail of an arsonist who's apparently killed at least one person who saw him. They are interviewing Ayumi, who they believe saw the arsonist, when a call comes in and the police head to the scene. On the way, Sato reveals that it's the anniversary of her father's death. He died in the line of duty, trying to bring a murder suspect in, and only a few scattered clues remain as to who did it. No one's been able to figure out the logic train he used or who the suspect was. But Sato does remember that on the day it happened, her father was without his handcuffs, which is possibly why the culprit was hard to keep ahold of. So when Takagi mentions that he doesn't have his handcuffs with him, she gives him hers - which are actually the pair her father had forgotten that fateful day.

While we don't get too deep into who Sato is as a person, we do get to see her in full swing as a detective and cop, and her self-assurance is a joy to read. I really like this character, can you tell? And while I'm not a big fan of romance and such, the shifting relationships between some of the adult characters in this series, especially early, are some of my favorites to read.

Meanwhile in the arcade a few days later, Sonoko and Ran run into one of their teachers, Jodie from America, playing video games and totally owning at them. While they're being impressed by her, a player at a fighting game turns up dead. It's a good intro to Jodie, and also just a clever mystery imo.

And finally, we get the first half of a story where the kids and Agasa go looking for mushrooms. When George goes missing, Conan and Ayumi and then Ai and Mitsuhiko pair off to go look for him. Conan's group finds him. Ai's group finds a body and get shot at by a hunter. It's kind of fun to see Ai and Mitsuhiko trying to alert the others to the danger without Conan's big brain to help them.

A LOCKED-ROOM MURDER AND ERI’S DECEPTION
Eri and four fellow lawyers gather for a meeting, but the night takes a deadly turn when one of them is found murdered in her locked bedroom. To make matters worse, a drunken Kogoro was asleep in the room, making him the prime suspect. Determined to clear his name, Eri pretends to believe he is guilty to mislead the real murderer. With Conan’s sharp deductions and Eri’s strategic deception, they set a clever trap to force the true culprit into revealing their crime.

FIRE AND JUSTICE – SATO’S RACE AGAINST TIME
A dangerous serial arsonist is setting the city ablaze, and Detectives Sato and Takagi, along with the Detective Boys, are on the case. But the stakes are even higher for Sato—today marks the deadline for solving her father’s murder, or the bank robber responsible will walk away with the stolen money. As she juggles both investigations, tragedy strikes when Takagi is attacked by the arsonist. Can Sato find the connection between the fires and the past crime before it’s too late?

DEADLY GAME AT THE ARCADE
A trip to the arcade takes a shocking turn when Ran, Sonoko, and Conan meet their high school English teacher, Jodie Starling, an avid gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a cutting-edge virtual reality fighting game, but the fun ends when a skilled player dies mid-match, his avatar freezing on the big screen at the peak of battle. The police narrow the suspects to four: his gaming rival, an employee, a middle-aged man, and even Jodie herself. As Conan investigates, he must uncover how the murder was committed in plain sight—and who had the motive to kill.

By now, most people know what to expect when reading a volume of Case Closed. Crime is committed, suspects are named, boy tranqs someone, and the case is solved. That in itself is not a mark against this series. My main problem after 27 or so volumes is the fact that this series is basically stuck in neutral, cranking volume after volume, without really making any serious progress to the core plot. It's like Heroes or Lost at season 2 where with the it initial popularity, made the networks go insane with trying to stretch that midas touch story into infinity if possible. Of course, Case Closed is different in that its structure is episodic in nature that can support such 'stretches' longer without much problem. But after 27 volumes, its really starting to feel its age and redundancy. Crimes are getting more absurd, evil criminals now are blatantly obvious (the sinister shifty eyes and pointed nose), while crimes of reason are getting less and less relevant (killed to protect hometown, killed to protect sister, killed to avenge family/finance/murder). At least with this volume, it looks like a new character is introduced that has some connections to the main plot. Even though she is filled with the usual stereotypes regarding Americans (blond, promiscuous, good with guns, and high praise of Japan).
Still I read on, in hopes of the series making a big advancement in plot, and because it's easy for a short read :-)
