Een veelbelovende cover maar een ontgoochelend boek. Zaken die er niet echt toe doen worden uitgespit terwijl het proces zelf heel kort wordt behandeld.

Το βιβλίο, το οποίο είναι η μυθιστορηματική μεταφορά της ομώνυμης ταινίας του 1988, βασίζεται σε μια αληθινή και συγκλονιστική ιστορία. Η πλοκή ακολουθεί τη Σάρα Τόμπιας, μια νεαρή σερβιτόρα, η οποία βιάζεται ομαδικά σε ένα μπαρ του Πόρτλαντ από τρεις άνδρες, ενώ αρκετοί θαμώνες παρακολουθούν, επευφημούν και ενθαρρύνουν τους δράστες. Η δικηγόρος της, Κάθριν Μέρφι, αποφασίζει να κινηθεί νομικά όχι μόνο εναντίον των βιαστών, αλλά και εναντίον του κοινού που λειτούργησε ως συνεργός στην πράξη, σε μια πρωτοποριακή και δύσκολη νομική μάχη για δικαιοσύνη.
Το βιβλίο καταπιάνεται με ένα εξαιρετικά βαρύ και σημαντικό θέμα: τη σεξουαλική βία, την συνενοχή των παρευρισκομένων και τη δύσκολη μάχη των θυμάτων για δικαίωση μέσω του νομικού συστήματος.
Για κάποιους αναγνώστες, η ωμότητα και η περιγραφή των γεγονότων είναι καθηλωτική, αν και απωθητική, και μπορεί να διαβαστεί απνευστί, κρατώντας τον αναγνώστη "δεμένο" με την ιστορία.
Ένα από τα κύρια μειονεκτήματα, όπως αναφέρεται και σε άλλες κριτικές, είναι ο πολύ βιαστικός ρυθμός της αφήγησης, ειδικά όσον αφορά τη δικαστική διαμάχη. Η πολύπλοκη δίκη μοιάζει να διαρκεί λίγες μόνο μέρες στο βιβλίο, κάτι μη ρεαλιστικό, που αφαιρεί από το βάθος της ιστορίας.
Ως μυθιστορηματική μεταφορά ταινίας, το βιβλίο προσπαθεί να προσθέσει βάθος με επιπλέον δευτερεύοντες χαρακτήρες, αλλά δεν είναι αρκετό για να ξεπεράσει την αίσθηση ότι πρόκειται απλώς για μια γραπτή εκδοχή του σεναρίου, με τη ταινία να θεωρείται συχνά ανώτερη.
Περιέχει πολύ περιγραφικές σκηνές σεξουαλικής κακοποίησης που μπορεί να ενοχλήσουν ή να αναστατώσουν τους αναγνώστες.
Η βαθμολογία των 2 στα 5 αστέρια είναι δικαιολογημένη για ένα βιβλίο που, ενώ έχει μια δυνατή και σημαντική ιστορία να πει, αποτυγχάνει στην εκτέλεση λόγω του βιαστικού ρυθμού και του περιορισμένου βάθους. Είναι μια μέτρια ανάγνωση που δεν καταφέρνει να προσφέρει την ίδια ένταση ή συναισθηματική βαρύτητα με την πηγή της έμπνευσής της, την ταινία "The Accused".

I have read the Dutch translation of the book as a part of my efforts to study Dutch.
The choice of the book was random, and I did not expect much from it. However, the book surprised me with the depth of the main issue (as I understood it) – what is the responsibility of the public tolerating crimes, in particular, violent crimes against women? Is there much difference between instigators and the society’s elite tolerating the crimes?

One relatively technical aspect intrigued me as a foreign lawyer. What I did not understood is how the conviction of instigators can affect the term to be served by the main perpetrators, who were already convicted based on the plea agreement. Would appreciate the clarification from anyone familiar with the U.S. law.

I read the paperback years ago. This book basically followed the movie. I gave it three stars because it was good but not great. Due to the being on paperback only, it will probably be a long time, if ever I read it again, so I really can't give it a more detailed review.

I remember having to watch this movie in Health Class in High School and I found it really disturbing and it’s always kind of stuck with me. When I came across the book I had to read it as I wondered about it again as an adult. I will say this much, this is one of the instances where I feel the Movie was way better then the book, but I think the book was written because of the movie. So that explains that.
Also I found the book very rushed, it feels like the whole court case happens over a three day period when in reality we all know it would drag on for a very long time. Especially when you’re putting several people on trial at the same time, not to mention charging them with something no one else thought of after the horrible crime that was committed. I feel the book could have been much better if more time and thought had been put into expanding on the story.
Warning to readers this book contains very descriptive scenes of sexual abuse, not for the easily disturbed.

Additional characters are the only attempt to give this book more depth than the movie. It wasn't enough.
