Clip Clop is the new young colt horse on Mr. Mark's farm. When Mr. Mark announces that Clip Clop is about to get his first set of horse shoes, the little colt begins to get different images of what his new shoes might be like, based on the shoes that the kids around the farm are wearing.
My mom was going through my old stuff and found this book. I LOVED "Clip Clop" as a child. I asked to have it read to me all of the time. I was especially fascinated by the two-page spread of dozens of unusual shoes. In fact, I liked it so much I took it upon myself to illustrate the title page:
And from the back page, here's my rendition of the little-known "second" ending, in which Clip Clop magically grows wings and flies through the air:
Okay ... that was weird. And these are the kind of books I took for granted when I was a little kid. I expected books like this. Now, I can't help but wonder why.
Clip Clop is a weanling ... since he's clearly a juvenile, and without a mother. Although described as a he, he has no genetalia. His owner tells him that he's getting his first shoes today.
For the rest of the day, Clip Clop obsesses about shoes. However, he assumes he's going to be wearing what people wear. And, quite frankly, I think he's gay. There's one scene where he imagines himself in feminine red shoes, wearing pink flowers.
Two of the kids clearly should never have been allowed in a barn. One girl uses a skip rope. Another little shit screams and runs about, pretending to be a cowboy, scaring the barn cats half to death.
And then Clip Clop finds out about horseshoes. And his fetish has been established.
This little book is illustrated with full color paintings by Florence Sarah Winship. Although she's good with people and cats, she clearly has trouble drawing horses.
I loved this book as a child. The story is cute, with Clip- Clop imagining that he is wearing ballet shoes or saddle shoes. Most of all I loved the beautiful illustrations. I said I would get a pair of blue shoes like Mother's when I grew up!
My other favorite early childhood book, about a colt who is told he is getting "shoes" the next day. He dreams and imagines all the sorts of "shoes" he may get, and then finds out the next day what "horse shoes" are.
There were only 2 books for me when I was being read to by my Mom every night... Clip Clop and the Little Lost Puppy. I think my addiction to shoes began at age 2. Zappos was equally as mesmerizing for many years before bed just looking at all those shoes and where would you wear them!!! Then I remembered CLIP CLOP !!! We are programmed so young ! I loved ClipClop and still do.
Conrad loves horses AND shoes! This is one of his favorite books and one that I've had in my library as a wee one. It introduces the idea of having different shoes for different activities and has cute illustrations of Clip Clop imagining himself in the different types of shoes his people friends are wearing. It makes me want saddle shoes even more.
I would probably give this book one and a half stars. The concept is often quite humorous, and Nancy Hoag steers the short story well, with the help of excellent illustrations by Florence Sarah Winship. This is a good picture book.
I found this book at my mom and dad's house a few days ago. I nearly wet my pants. I read this book at least a million times when I was a child. I LOVED IT!!! Now it is sitting on my shelf amongst my other most loved books.
