A dense little paperback of basic writings of Medieval philosophers. From Augustine to William of Ochkam, these men's worldview was so different from ours that even Ms. Fremantle's excellent introductory passages cannot remove the opacity with which we read the scholastic philosophers.
Still, when I first read this--and the following volumes--in the 1960s, it opened a world of thought that I didn't then realize existed. These people struggles long and hard making sense of the world in which they lived: a world very different--yet not so different--from ours.
Read instead of working on my seminar paper. Ethical procrastination. Amazing compilation of medieval philosophers, perfect introduction. You can certainly read the structuralism within the authorial portions, totally 50s.
The Age of Belief is some introductions and commentaries about famous philosophers of Middle Ages, such as St. Augustin, Abelard, St. Thomas etc.

Sometimes I really wonder why I chose the books that I do...This book is technically a waste of time but I am having trouble putting it down because I hate starting something and not finishing. Blah blah blah blah blah...
You know how Charlie Brown's parents sound..."mmwa mmwa mwwa mwaa mwaa mwaa" That is how this book was for me.
