This book presents groundbreaking strategies for psychotherapy with today's teens, for whom high-risk behavior, lack of adult guidance, and intense anxiety and stress increasingly come with the territory. Ron Taffel addresses the key challenge of building a therapeutic relationship that is strong enough to promote real behavioral and emotional change. He demonstrates effective ways to give advice that teens will listen to, get them to tell the truth about their lives, help parents reestablish their authority, and extend the reach of therapy by such nontraditional means as inviting teens to bring friends into sessions.
I found this book to be informative and useful. It’s a book I’m reading for a graduate class. I don’t think I would’ve chosen it otherwise. There are many great things that Taffel; however, it’s a ten-fifteen year old book at this point. There was one chapter that completely irritated me because the things he was saying don’t make sense for today’s teenagers but do make sense for my generation who were teenagers when he wrote the book. Still, much of the book I found to valuable. I will definitely take his advice into my someday practice in social work and into my current practice in education.
If you are (really) interested in working with today's teens, who are very different psychologically from those of 30 years ago, then read this book. Suitable for school counselors, psychologists or high school teachers.
A practical guide to the terrifying world of teens, with wise, helpful suggestions for both therapists and parents. If you are tearing your hair out over a teen you love, read this.
This is written mostly for social workers and those in the "biz" but I was fascinated to read about cases and how they deal with teen angst and way beyond. Wish this guy was closer than NYC!
