On the eve of his wedding, Lawrence Howard's simple mistake regarding an address propels him straight into the arms of Juliet Lyons Dane, an unworldly young girl just up from the country for her first London Season.
Lawrence is convinced he is spending his last night as a bachelor with the capital's newest sensational Bird of Paradise. But his final fling brings with it the most shocking consequences.
Resentful of having been so compromised, and convinced he's been betrayed by her brother Matthew, a former business associate, Lawrence is determined to make Juliet suffer. He is certain that somehow she is part of a nefarious plot to ruin him and his family. That beneath her act of innocence lies an experienced woman of the world out to get whatever she wants.
But the more Lawrence learns of Juliet, the more he recognizes his mistake. Suddenly he sees that innocent or experienced, Juliet is the perfect woman for him. Can Lawrence make his wife fall in love with him before it's too late?
I heard about Sorcha MacMurrough books and the stories looked really good, so I hunted until I found one with a storyline I thought sounded good. Boy was I sad about this book. The "hero" was such a b*stard to the heroine. She was such a lovely heroine too, she didn't deserve the way he treated her and continued to treat her throughout the book right to the end.
Some of the reasons I HATED this "hero":
When they were travelling in his carriage to his property, they had to stay overnight at an inn. He made her take her clothes off and only left her with a cape. He walked into the inn to his room and just left here there, no clothes, no money, no room, no nothing. She ended up bunking in with an employee. This is an historical, guys, she couldn't just whip out her own credit card and get a room. She was stuffed.
When they got to his run down property he dumped her there and took off. He left her with no money to buy food, his servants wouldn't do a thing for her, she ended up sick and nearly died. He came home and got angry with her. Man, at this point I'm amazed I read on.
Near the end of the book, they were at a party and the H offered her sexually to a man neither of them knew who expressed an interest in her. The h was a good girl, a virgin till she met the H, and she actually loved him. She was devastated, but I think not as much as I was that a H would do that to his h, his wife, who'd done nothing to him, except love him.
Hello, how on earth would I ever want to read about this man, why would I ever want the lovely heroine to end up with him, why would I ever want to read an author who churns out this utter tripe? Basically I wanted to jump into the book and beat the crap out of the H myself.
Never did he apologise for all the horrible things he did to her.
His so-called redemption at the end was way too little too late for me to ever like him or wish him on the heroine. I hated his guts. I really disliked this book and vowed never to read one of this author's again (and I haven't!)
