For a moment, she looked as if she had turned to stone. Any slight twitches of her facial muscles ceased. Even her chest stopped rising and falling as she took in air.

Everything went completely still, her eyes glazing as she stared down at the mug in her hands. A pause that lasted several seconds before she snapped her eyes upward and asked, “There were more?”

“Yes.”
“How many?”

When Reed Mattox and his K-9 partner, Billie, received a direct summons to the personal residence of Governor Thomas Cowan, he assumed it was another escalation over the particulars of their new position as liaisons between the Columbus Police Department and the state Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Another overstep by the highest ranking elected official in Ohio, trying to bring Reed and Billie directly under his control.

What he didn’t expect was to enter the man’s home and find that, not only was the case presented to them legit, but unlike anything they had ever seen. A friend and associate of the governor, kidnapped, sedated, and tattooed across the entire length of his forehead.

PRIDE. A single word, with no clear cause or motivation, until a second victim turns up the next day. GREED, proceeded in order by SLOTH.

The fabled seven deadly sins, branded on people from across the state. Victims with no obvious connection between.

Knowing more attacks will come, Reed and Billie fling themselves headlong into a search unlike anything they’ve encountered before. A hunt that brings them in contact with people trying desperately to keep secrets from the past hidden.

Secrets someone is fighting to make certain they never forget.

I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

A new Reed and Billie thriller is a gift. It’s been a little while—but so worth the wait. The Family is the best R&B novel in recent memory—possibly the best one yet.

Combining all the elements we love most about the dogged detective and his K9 partner—heinous, serial crimes with seemingly unsolvable investigation; driving, nearly real-time pace; damaged but unrelenting heroic investigator; familiar cast of vital, supporting characters; deep, almost spiritual connection between man and dog; and through it all, an underlying current of heart and humanity that grabs you somewhere deep and vests you profoundly within the story and outcome.

We find Reed and Billie working back into shape after the conclusion of the case resolved in the previous book. Unceremoniously summoned to the governor’s mansion, flaring Reed’s ever-rising acrimony with his and Billie’s new-ish position as liaison between the police department and the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation seemingly once again being abused as the personal lap-dogs (no offense, Billie) of the occupant of their destination, they arrive to find not only a legitimate case, but a particularly disturbing and perplexing one.

A prominent businessman and friend of the governor (read: mega-donor), has been attacked, rendered unconscious, and had the word PRIDE tattooed across the whole of his forehead. He has no idea of the perpetrator, no understanding of the meaning, no idea of any motivation—and there are zero forensics.

Reed and Billie have nothing to go on. And if that weren’t perplexing enough, the following day, a second victim is discovered under eerily similar circumstances, hundreds of miles away, GREED emblazoned across his forehead.

The pattern is obvious, but again without any clues and with no connection between victims, Reed and Billie face the most difficult challenge of their career: with five more targets clearly on the to-do list, track down this perpetrator before he strikes again. And again. And again…

The reader knows more about the perpetrator than Reed and Billie but not the motivation behind the crimes, and therefore cannot see how R&B will ever be able to solve this crime spree before the Seven Deadly Sins are completed and the perp vanishes forever.

It’s a race against time to solve this conundrum, requiring all of Reed’s fortitude, tenacity, investigative experience and intuition, as well as Billie’s nose, ferociousness, and their empathetic connection to pull this one out.

The Family may simply be the best of the great Reed and Billie novels yet. Not only do they face the toughest investigative challenge of their career, but the nature of the crime is so heinous, so sinister, it’s an affront to humanity itself. Under ever intensifying time pressure, Reed and Billie must call upon every bit of knowledge, skill, and instinct they possess to relentlessly pursue this case to its conclusion.

New to Reed and Billie, or an R&B completest, The Family is a must-read.

This "family" is up to no good for sure as they seek revenge for a long ago perceived injustice. Can Reed and Billie figure out who the next victims will be before it's too late?

The Family is the 11th book in the Reed and Billie series. Author Dustin Stevens has a gift for freshness and impact that readers embrace in every new adventure. His settings are in the here and now and relatable with all of our gadgets, devices, and social media. I hope he is as eager to do Book 12 as fans are eager to read it.

Stevens again delivers richly developed characters and one of his most complex plots to date - and he does not shy away from a deep exploration of evil. Billie, Reed’s Belgian Malinois K-9 partner, offers readers a companion storyline with the portrayal of the relationship between K-9 and handler. Readers will appreciate the extra dimension Billie brings to the investigative narrative of The Family, undeterred by bias or jumping to conclusions - the scent says it is or it isn’t.

Reed and Billie’s adventure launches with an urgent call from the Governor to drop everything and get to the Capital - a wealthy donor and political ally has been assaulted, sadistically. Immediate and thorough action is required.

The Family, as the title hints, deals with relationships - wealth and power, poverty and invisibility, bully and victim, justice and indifference, family and faith - all the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The family of The Artist, The Tall Boy, and Angel are tight knit, though woefully misguided, siblings. Tormented by a past injustice that pushed tragedy into their lives, they are on a mission of revenge that is both devious and ghastly. The system ignored them because they were ‘the wrong side of the tracks’ class.

However, Billie doesn’t care what side of the tracks you live on - you will leave a scent and she will find you.

The Family is a tight multidimensional tale. Readers will arrive at the last sentence and turn off their e-reader, but they will not finish with The Family for some time after.

Having read each of the Reed and Billie books so far, this one's premise was quite different, yet the theme of revenge was apparent from the start. The uniqueness not only made it enjoyable to anticipate how things would ultimately come together, but also refreshing due to a much lower body count than some of the earlier books in the series! The usual vivid descriptions brought the various characters to life.

A couple of nitpicks: while the trauma of receiving unwanted tattoos can't be denied, the notion these would be permanent doesn't fly with laser removals now common. But most of all, we want more Billie! She took a serious backseat to Reed in this edition with little to show in terms of helping to solve the case.

With that said, this is another solid edition to the series, and I'm happy to hear the partners have more adventures ahead!

Wow! Reed and Billie tackle one of the most original crimes in all of crime fiction.

Reed and Billie have been recently assigned as special investigator for the Governor of Ohio. Because of his position, he is now a go-between between the Cincinnati Police Department and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

But the Governor Cowan calls the two detectives into his mansion, points to his friend, Dean Morgan, who now has a tattoo of the word PRIDE across his forehead, and then tells Reed that Dean "needs our help". It turns out that Pride is the first of the seven deadly sins and it quickly becomes evident that more victims and going to appear soon.

This is one novel that will keep you engrossed reading it until the very end!

Ugh. This book was TERRIBLE, and I have trouble believing it was written by an author whose books have often ended up on my Kindle. Stevens has developed a writing style I don't remember encountering before, and it's an extremely irritating one. Almost the entire book was full of disjointed and grammatically horrible sentences, so much so that I had trouble finishing the book. I ended up fast-forwarding though much of the story, just to get through the awful, weird ruminations of Reed, and his constant "ruffling of the thick fur" on Billie's neck. The story line was mediocre at best, boring at worst. Billie was about the only character I liked. Come on, Dustin; you can do so much better.

A very twisted storyline. A gripping tale of a roller coaster ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. Unbelievable actions of violent revenge. Actions that in no way could right a wrong. Very well written, and the peeling of the onion to the reveal was great! I love this team, Reed and Billie. Reed has a sixth sense for putting seemingly unrelated information into the present situation to make sense out of what’s happening. And this is one beautiful dog!!! I was given an advance copy for my honest review.

What do you get when you have an over zealous, religious Mom, and 3 siblings that are out for revenge.
You get one of the most intense, and heart stopping Reed and Billie adventure that Dustin Stevens has ever written.
This adventure has Reed and Billie rushing to stop cruel, lasting, debilitating acts on individuals that just happened to be on the fringes of a 7 year old incident.
Stevens spins the adventure that grips you in a way that makes it hard to out down.   This is the 11th Reed and Billie adventure,  and I found it one of the best.

Outstanding

Always enjoy Stevens’ fiction. Especially glad to be reunited with Reed and Billie. Readers can always be sure to get a unique mystery with this author. No cookie cutter plot line. I can’t scan chapters like I do in some mysteries but must read every word and often reread certain passages to stay alert to the plot. Appreciate the challenge of reading this type of fiction. In Stevens’ fiction, you can actually admire the main characters because they are realistic. Thanks! Looking forward to the next new novel.

You should read this book!

What can I say? I just keep repeating myself when I do this. Yes, this is a terrific book. Read it! As usual, I had to read the entire book in one day. That in itself should tell you that this is a really exciting, twisting and turning book! Whenever I read one of these Reed and Billie wonders I have to say that this is my favorite series of Mr Steven’s. Then I read one of the books featuring Hatch and then I say that’s my favorite series. I encourage you to read this bizarre, exciting book!

I just finished all of the books in the series. Obviously I liked the series and hope there are more to follow. There was enough mystery to not easily figure out the relationship of the villain to the victim(s). There was a little bit of a surprise in that relationship as well. I liked the characters; they seemed real to me. Not supermen or superdogs. I was glad the issue of Reed's partner was addressed; that answered questions from the first few books. Did not have to describe violence in gory detail. Just good murder mysteries.

Never disappoints. A book you can't put down!

Reed & Billy are caught up in a case involving a close friend of the Governor, who wants answers asap but secretly. His friend kidnapped and tatooed on his forehead. Why? Then another one, then another with tatoos being a single word taken from the 7 deadly sins. As the number go higher, it seems like there's no connection between the victims. Til Reed sees a photo in 2 of the victims homes with a young athlete in them, the same one. Yet neither victim knows the other one. This book keeps you guessing and as frustrated as Reed!

3 3/4 Stars, rounded up: In many ways, I liked this book a lot. It asks the question: is it better to be killed or to have to live through rage aimed at you. What I liked: the plot (mostly); the characters, especially Reed and Billie; the relationship between Reed and Grimes. What I didn’t like: it’s unbelievable to have such an intense case being resolved in a few days; it also didn’t make sense that the original “crime” garnered that much hate seeking revenge. I still would like to read about his personal life and romance. Overall, this is a good series.

Great book, I give it 5 stars!!

Reed and Billie are summoned to the governor’s mansion and so begins a race against time to solve one of the most horrible cases yet. The seven deadly sins, one victim for each sin and time is running out.

One of his best books yet and it will keep you turning the pages on the edge of your seat. There is non stop action from two of my all time favorite characters. This novel will read well as a standalone, but you will read all of them.

I love Billie and of course Reed. I say every book about them it is my favorite. So now The Family is my fav.

Some great and witty comments from a great read - Prison: "The perfect greenhouse, allowing a budding sociopath to bloom."

"Hardly the sorts of plots that bestselling novels and Emmy-winning television were based on, though he had seen more done for less." Made me chuckle out loud.

"Sloppy, erratic vigilantism..." So read to find out why!

Reed and Billie are back, summoned by the governor when one of his cronies becomes a victim. It turns out that he’s only the first of many as a deranged family is loose terrorizing all. Trying to find the link falls on our K-9 heroine and her trusted partner. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and voluntarily provided an honest review.

Murder would've been easier for the victims. A lifetime of suffering and humiliation was the goal of this bunch, however.
Reed and Billie have a new case that they've never seen anything like it before. In fact, no one they encounter has!
Where to start?
I recommend this book, not only for the lead characters, but for it's originality. The storyline is shocking, but in a most unusual way.

Reed and Billie are off on another case for the governor. A face tattoo begins a chain of events that leaves Reed and his local LEO’s always one step behind as they try to put the pieces together. As this case moves faster and faster, Reed and Billie are running on reserves as rest is out of the question. With non stop action, intrigue and mystery you will loose some sleep with ibis one.

I was fortunate to be able to read this book as a part of the ARC and found it to be quite entertaining. Reed and Billie work as pair to solve cases and this case is a real doozy stemming back for 7 years. They seem to be one step behind and then the case broke wide open with a startling revelation. Wow! A good one.

A great series ,and once again Reed and. Billie are called in, and not what’s he expected. Tattoo’s gave them the picture of what had happened, no more words were needed. Seven sins and secrets would be unfolded for them to solve.
Gripping ,plot that readers will enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review

Here’s the problem with Dustin Stevens Reed and Billie books… when you get it, you read it…. And read it and read it….and all of a sudden you are finished….and then you have to wait for another in this fantastic series. Steven’s story and character development is second to none.. pick up one of his Reed and Billie books… you will not be sorry!!!

Okay, a quick synopsis hopefully, I won't put any real spoilers in...Ham is amazing, OMG, we all secretly want to be her. Mikey is Mikey and don't forget about Glenda, yes, some very interesting twists and turns in this one. I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did.

Good news: Billie is back in action

Pride - greed - sloth - gluttony - who is tattooing words like these on people's foreheads? The victims don't know each other and seem to have nothing in common. How can Reed and Billie stop the attacks? Will there be 7 victims? Why is this happening? To find out, grab your copy of The Family.

This is such a great series! Billie is truly the star of these books! The author really came up with a unique crime this time, that kept the reader focused on who and why these crimes were being committed. Always great storylines and characters in this series. Looking forward to the next Reed and Billie book!

This book needs a responsible editor. The grammar is atrocious, with an abundance of sentence fragments. If this is an attempt to create a new style of writing, it fails miserably. The plot may be well done, but I only finished a quarter of the book before giving up in disgust. I do not remember the previous 10 volumes in the series being so poorly written

The Family

Reed and Billie are called to the governor's mansion for a discrete investigation for a personal friend taking them through the central part of the state finding several victims. As always with the help of many they catch the three siblings causing havoc. Love this series.

The Artist and siblings have a point to make, and they're doing it in a horrible way.
Reed and Billie need to figure out who is tattooing the sins on people before more lives are ruined. An intriguing story.

The Family brings thought of warm and fuzzy, right, but remember this is a Dustin Stevens novel, so not so much. Reed and Billie on the track of a series of strange crimes that seem unrelated and odd in the extreme. It all comes to a crescendo at the end that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
