Surprise! Yep, something unexpected happened. You may recall I basically finished Deadtime Stories a while back when doing the ripoff rounds. But there were 2 left that I just had no access to and I gave up hope of them ever showing up on archive or anything like that so I moved on. Then I ended up with one of those missing 2 books, thanks to trying out an Inter Library Loan.

So I did read it physically. I’ll look into it for other things if I can make it work, it’s like getting a crazy new power lol. So before doing anything else, I went through this so let’s do that.

This was the final book in the series and is even dedicated to the fans, so they did know this was the end. The contract was set for 17 books and I guess it wasn’t big enough to get more despite it being one of the better remembered GB ripoffs.

Anyway, the book is even Colin McCay who recently had a tooth come out. One night he thinks he sees a fairy but a rather gross monster version of one, similar to what you see on the cover. Soon his brother Quint has the same thing happened to him so they team to stay up and capture one of these things as they seemed rather scary.

They fail to do so but are given a poem telling them to find the fairy HQ out in the forest. They head out and on their way go through a fairy tale world on their quest to face the fairies.

This one was solid. I’ve seen some mixed reviews on it here and there and I see why and I lean to liking it. It gets started quickly but we actually get to know the kids somewhat. They even have descriptions! There’s some solid horror with the Faeries early on and some deep cut lore. When the journey starts, it pivots to being a full on fairy tale thing as they go to Reject Hill with rejected versions of classic fairy tales.

We have Little Blue Riding Hood and Snow Black. …We never see the latter one, just this version of the Hunstman. It is fun, just not exactly horror and it becomes the focus. The Faeries are hardly in it which is a shame. It is humor based and a fair amount of it does land.

The dialogue can be hit or miss so I see how some could be annoyed by it. But we have the dwarves as a motorcycle gang getting into a gang war so it’s peak fiction actually. It flows well and has enough fun bits in there. It even has at least one reference to the original dark version of these tales.

On the flip side, there isn’t really a climax. There’s a cool twist but it ends before it can explore it and it robs off any true climax. Like what happens could happen as it is but there isn’t much of a fight. It’s weird, it sorts craps the bed in the end but you wouldn’t need to change too much to make it work.

As it is, it is solid. Not one of the total best of the series but one of the more unique ones for sure. Deadtime was on the more standard side so it’s cool that before it ended it got to have a more out there story. It’s not for everyone but if you can somehow find out, it’s solid enough.

So there, got that settled. Now if only the Tiny Towns sequel showed up, here’s hoping. Not much more to say, next will be a Christmas book, hopefully. That should close out the year, we’ll see.

See ya then.

So I really liked this one, because it had a fairy tale theme.
The two main characters are twin brothers, and at night, when they begin having loose teeth, they start seeing a faerie. But it's not a regular faerie. It's not even waiting for their teeth to fall out before it takes them.
They don't know what the faeries want, but one night they leave the twins a note, telling them to meet up with them in the woods.
They set out to find them and get their answers, but these aren't the regular woods behind their home. On their way, they begin running into a whole cast of very strange, but somehow very familiar characters. They realize they remind them of fairy tale characters, but they're... different.
