On the course of his trek across the green Texas countryside in the spring of 1868, J. W. Walford only stopped at the small, hidden ranch intending to purchase a horse with which to hasten his flight from the law. But when he stumbled across an unconscious woman near the ranch's well, he had no choice but to help the damsel in distress. He never suspected that behind her raven-haired beauty lay the characteristics of a frontier hellion.
When Louisa Burgess awoke to find a handsome stranger had come to her rescue, she thought it was just another of the many daydreams she'd indulged in since the death of her lying, cheating husband. But in the tattered remains of his Union Army uniform, this dark and brooding knight in shining armor was a waking fantasy. J. W. would be the answer to all her problems—her ticket away from the hardships of the debt left by her husband; away from the greedy eyes of banker Titus Gillette.
With Louisa's infant in tow, the pair set off toward an unknown future. Their pasts were full of heartache, and the road ahead promised further trials. But neither was intimidated, for under the grand expanse of the velvety Texas sky, J. W. and Louisa found solace in each other's arms, every evening . . . At Twilight.
Beth Henderson's first book was published in 1990. She has also written as Lisa Dane, Beth Cruise and Elizabeth Daniels. And currently as J.B. Dane and Nied Darnell as well.
J. W. Walford is close to death's door when he manages to escape from a hangman's noose. With a posse on his tail he unexpectedly comes upon a woman at a well. She looks weak and confused so he takes her into the rambling house and finds a baby in a cradle. And an old drunken woman passed out in a rocking chair. He tries his best to assist the young lady and the infant, all the while worrying what will happen if the men in pursuit find him.
And so begins the sweet story of Mr. J. W. Walford and Mrs. Louisa Burgess, a recently widowed mother of one. She helps him before the day is out and he now owes her. A debt incurred is a debt paid. She asks for his help in leaving the broken down ranch with promises of accommodating him with his escape. She is aware he has killed a man but not much more. She has some special secrets, too.
Each mile they travel brings them closer together. They barely know each other and yet they feel like something exceptional is happening. Each knows the other will eventually leave.
J.W. is a sweetheart of a hero. He has loved and lost but thinks he doesn't deserve more for all he has done in and after the war. Louisa, 'Lou', had a husband who never loved her. The grandfather who raised her thought she was bad news. And a lecherous banker expected to 'own' Lou to cover her deceased husband's debts.
These two needed each other.
If you love historical romances, if you are fond of Americana stories that take place in Texas, if you enjoy tales of people who get a second chance, AT TWILIGHT is that and more. The buildup comes slowly but not in a bad way. There is no instant sex here. Instead, you'll find a heartfelt and encouraging story of this memorable couple.
This was an excellent read, I thoroughly enjoyed it!! It's a western love story, but it hooked me because it was different, and I was involved from the very first page, right to the end! This is a new author for me, but this one is a keeper, and I will definitely be watching for my books by her. Recommended for anyone who likes historical romance w/a western flavor!
At Twilight is an excellent, well-written historical romance. Lou is an admirable heroine, strong and fiercely protective of her baby. And J.W. is the perfect match for her, a tough, sexy, kind and rugged hero. This novel felt so ‘authentic’ and the dialogue, setting and characters were brought to life with the author’s skilled writing. It took me back to my childhood of reading the Louis L’Amour books, except this one had more romance, of course. The ending was sooo intense and nerve-wracking but immensely satisfying. A truly wonderful read and I highly recommend.
