The Music of the Soul is one of the best books on Sufi mysticism that I have read. A lot of the imagery reminds me of Teresa of Avila. Teresa had seven rooms in The Interior Castle. The Music of the Soul uses veils and there are seven veils. For a book on theology and mysticism, it is a very easy read. The first part of the book is easy to understand, but as the book goes deeper into the journey, it requires more thought because the concepts are more difficult to comprehend. I got bogged down in the middle of the book and had to set it aside for awhile. Once I got thru some of the harder parts, the end focuses on love and it reminded me a little of Paul's letters, but only a little.
I don't think Sufi teachings are for everyone. Some of the concepts appear really odd if approached with a logical brain. But, you have to remember that the goal of the Sufi is to become intoxicated with God and have your being annihilated by its closeness to God. So, it is easy to dismiss the book because it doesn't make sense. That is a mistake. I am glad that I went back to the book and finished it. I think the one teaching of the book that I need to incorporate into my daily life is the practice of politeness. That is the first step on the Sufi path and it may be the most difficult in an impatient, hectic world. I think that may be why it is stressed repeatedly in Music of the Soul. Hopefully, we can all approach life in a spirit of politeness.
Our beloved Sidi will be missed, (May Allah be pleased with him) as we attempt to pass on this sacred knowledge to all on the journey to Allah. Music of The Soul is a beautiful work on the maqamat and heart of Sidi. Allah, Allah, Allah.
