Full disclosure here: Robert Patrick has been a friend and colleague of mine since 1965, and I recently published four one-act plays of his collectively titled Up By Wednesday.
Temple Slave is very gay, very purple, and very good. It is a fictitious account of Mr. Patrick's time spent at the Caffe Cino, the iconic birthplace of modern gay theatre, Robert himself now considered one of the founders of that movement. His play The Haunted Host, and Lanford Wilson's The Madness of Lady Bright are its cornerstones. The characters are all supposed to be amalgams of various people, but if tortured I believe I would quickly give up what I think are their real names. Robert Patrick's prose is as brilliant as is his writing for the stage, and that is considerable. If you like backstage, this is a beauty; if you like gay erotica, there are two orgies; if you just like a damn good story very well told, read Temple Slave. I'm straight, and I loved it. Okay, I did skip over the second orgy.
