After being falsely accused of murder, mega-billionaire Luke Montgomery couldn't afford more scandal. Especially if he wanted to clinch his plan to crush rival magnate Harold Rothchild. However, when the handsome high roller spotted a skittish single mom under siege in his Vegas casino, he figured the odds were finally in his favor....
Before Amanda Patterson could catch her breath, Luke brokered a deal to spirit mother and child off to his mansion to protect them from a predator. His asking price...? Pose as his fiancée. But Luke was blindsided by his smoldering desire for Amanda. Would this notorious playboy relinquish control and gamble on love?
The nuns in my Catholic elementary school always said that each of us has a gift, a reason we were put here on earth. Our job is to discover what that purpose is. Well, I knew early on that I was meant to be a writer. Who else would spend her childhood grinding sparkling rocks into fairy dust and convince her friends it was real? Or daydream her way through elementary school, spend high school reading philosophy and playing the bagpipes, and then head off to Spain during college to live the writer's life?
After four years in Madrid I straggled back home, broke but fluent in Spanish, and discovered that I'd acquired a marketable skill. So instead of writing, I began teaching Spanish. I also married a Coast Guard Officer and followed him around the country as he rescued ships and saved lives.
The years passed. We had two sons. I earned my master's degree and continued teaching, which I really enjoyed. We met interesting people and acquired a quirky dog.
But the desire to write kept lurking in my mind. That was my dream, what I knew I'd been destined to do -- and yet, I had never done it. Then one day I made a decision. If I wanted to become a published author, I had to stop fantasizing about writing and actually do it.
So I began my first book –- and discovered that writing a saleable novel was much harder than I'd dreamed. Fortunately, I inherited a healthy dose of Irish stubbornness, a strong mid-western work ethic and a love of challenges that helped me persevere.
So here I am at last, just as the nuns instructed and right where I hoped I would be –- writing stories about characters struggling along their own paths of self-discovery. I hope you enjoy their journey home.
Having finally escaped the clutches of her abusive ex-husband, Amanda Patterson arrives with her daughter to Las Vegas, only to become the next intended victim of a deranged killer with a huge grudge against the Rothchild clan.
Her only hope – Luke Montgomery, ruthless, playboy billionaire with an unhealthy thirst for revenge, and a hidden soft spot for single mothers in danger. Problem – he needs Amanda to pose as his fiancée until he closes on an important deal. Second problem – the line between reality and fiction is getting more and more blurred with each day that passes.
This was the story I’ve been waiting for since the first page Luke Montgomery appeared on in The Heiress’s 2-Week Affair. And the fact that he got his story so early in this miniseries (book 2), made me a happy reader indeed.
This story started in the final scene of the previous one. In the lobby of The Janus, Luke’s hotel, where the man who murdered Candace Rothchild, Natalie’s twin sister, slipped Candace’s diamond ring into a woman’s purse. That woman turned out to be Amanda, this book’s heroine. And because her cavernous purse “swallowed” the dratted ring, the killer set his sights on her, stalking her, threatening her daughter, breaking into her sister’s apartment…Until he drew her into Luke’s arms. If the killer hot on her trail wasn’t enough, Amanda faced the terrible fact that she might have inherited her mother’s mental illness.
The buildup was wonderful, the suspense rather subtle, but that more “effective” in the chilling and guessing department, with the imminent threat constantly hovering at the sidelines, waiting to pounce. But what truly drove this story forward were the two leads. I love it when two characters click immediately, the attraction is palpable and the chemistry is sizzling- What happened between Luke and Amanda was no different, only a bit hotter than most, which is rather surprising for a SRS category book. Because let me tell you, some of their scenes were H-O-T. And they were absolutely perfect for each other, healing each other’s wounds, learning to embrace their mutual feelings together…Though Luke, in true alpha form, threw a “fit” just before the end, but an important event (that’s usually reserved for the heroine) made him see the error of his ways. These two were a cute and sexy couple that I wouldn’t mind revisiting in the future.
Great suspense and pacing, wonderful characterization, tender love-story, explosive chemistry. 4 ½ stars
And since this is part of a miniseries, and a main suspense arc, the story ended on a nice cliffhanger, whetting this reader’s appetite for more. I’m looking forward to reading more about the Rothchild clan, and discovering the killer’s identity.

He doesn't need a romantic entanglement right now, but Amanda is hard to resist. Luke and Amanda both came from poor backgrounds and both are having trouble letting go of their past. Luke still holds a wealthy Las Vegas mogul responsible for his mother's death and is planning to put the man out of business, while Amanda is afraid of taking career risk as well as getting involved with Luke after all the trouble she had with her ex.
This was a good escape type romantic suspense novel. A sexy billionaire and a damsel in distress with a happy ever after. Overall a B
Single Mother Amanda Patterson is always looking over her shoulders for her abusive ex husband. When she is gun downed in Luke Montgomery's casino he offers her and her daughter to stay at his house. But there's a catch. Luke can't afford any bad publicity, so protecting Amanda will solve his problems. What Luke doesn't expect is to find being in Amanda's company satisfying. He's never enjoyed a woman's company like he does her. When attacks keep coming at both of them and Amanda requires one sacrifice from Luke, their future may be demolished.
Gail Barrett is a most entertaining romantic suspense writer. This is a great "escape" read. If you are waiting for that gorgeous billionaire to come to your rescue, fulfill your romantic fantasies and save the day...wait no more!
