Milagro Lane

A tale of murder wrapped in family secrets, potentially incestuous relationships, and a diabolic plot to avenge lost love, this intriguing mystery is set in San Antonio, Texas—a traditional city where races and ethnic groups blend. When Estela Valenzuela appears at the funeral of the patriarch of one of the oldest, richest families in town, she fascinates Jerry Grohman, the son of the deceased. Through Estela, he ventures into parts of the city he never knew, even one part that doesn't exist—Milagro Lane—the street of the mind and of inspiration, where one can only go in rare, fulfilling occasions.

"Milagro Lane" is a very lightweight book with a half-hearted mystery storyline. Jay Brandon is a pretty good writer, but this book just didn't do it for me. Have to admit that, being from San Antonio, it was entertaining to read about the city's history and politics and to try to figure out the real people behind the fictitious names. But, unless you're a South Texas native, you may find this book pretty boring. Don't give up on Jay Brandon if you haven't read him before. His other books are much, much better.

I'd read a review that said that this book was San Antonio's equivalent to San Francisco's 'Tales of the City' so this book flew to the top of my must read list. While it isn't as good as 'Tales of the City' it is a really fun read in its own right. The writing is breezy the plot is entertaining. Jay Brandon captures the essence of San Antonio in a fun and witty way.

Intriguing and suspenseful

Five stars for the locality and suspense feeling within the first few pages. It gave a familiarity feeling with locations and detailed descriptions of various places. The cast was energetic and lively. I couldn't put it down, hardly. I wanted to know every next chapter. It has an amazing storyline and beautiful perspective of San Antonio. Loved it!

I loved this book. I saw Brandon at the Texas book festival, heard him talk and picked up the book. You get a real sense of the setting, San Antonio. Even without that the story and character would be great.
