William & Kate: Celebrating a Royal Engagement

Rate this book
In a series of outstanding pictures, many of which are brought together here for the first time, a leading royal photographer examines the intertwined lives of Prince William and Kate Middleton  This unique book is a fully illustrated biography of a very modern British royal romance between the man who will, one day, be king and a beautiful, middle-class English girl. The royal romance of Prince William, second in line to the throne and grandson of Her Majesty the Queen, and Catherine "Kate" Elizabeth Middleton, the daughter of self-made millionaires, is celebrated and examined as a story that could arguably help shape the future of royal relationships. Prince William and Kate Middleton became engaged in October 2010 while on holiday in Kenya, and the royal engagement was announced by Clarence House in November.

Unlike the previous books I've read about the Royal Engagement, this book was originally more focused on Will until the realization of how important Kate is in his life. Additionally this is more of a photo-essay book as large glossy pictures accompany the text. Consequently the writing is much less in-depth and less important than the pictures. There is no essay for the engagement photos other than the caption and date.

What is different is some "new" photographs of young William and his mother (I am not familiar with them, showing that they were not in the previous books I've read but they may be familiar to long-time royal watchers) and even some new ones of Kate. There is also a brief chapter about modern royal marriages in Europe, with the examples of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Monaco, Spain, and Belgium, showing how commoner/royal marriages have been well-received in their countries and how they can serve as models.

I know it's been a month since the wedding itself but this was the first opportunity I had to schedule this book. It's certainly worth at least a skim to see the pictures but the text does not really present anything new.

Interestingly, much of this book was written before the engagement announcement of William and Kate – and actually the first edition was published a couple of months shy of it! Originally the title was “William and Kate: Celebrating a Royal Romance”, but with the big news Nunn promptly changed the last word to “Engagement”. I haven’t had the chance to look at the original edition to see just how different it was, but for the most part Kate is referred to as a “Royal girlfriend” in this book, and a Royal Wedding is simple speculation, aside from literally the last two pages that show a photo of them when they announced their engagement. So it appears as though the change in title was made in fear of looking outdated, even though the content didn’t change much.

Following the tradition of biographies of Prince William this one begins with the story of Diana and Charles – although not as much time is spent here in comparison to other books. Another interesting addition to this biography that will set it apart from the rest is a chapter on other European Royal Weddings with commoners. Nunn also provides us with some photos that perhaps most of us royal watchers haven’t seen before, and they are large, glossy, and beautiful! A great read overall!

Okay, so I am really not that interested in the current royals (honestly!, but I was kind of curious about this book anyway. The book is a fun light read, and covers the period from Diana's marriage to the current impending royal wedding. You can finish it in one day.
