Darkness Looms in the Dragon Lands   War is brewing. New threats have emerged in Keledev. The watchmen of Thousand Falls and the Windhold find goblin tunnels in the slopes of the mountain barrier that may hold many dangerous creatures. At the same time, scouting missions into the Dragon Lands confirm that the dragons are building an army of tortured Aladoth villagers to destroy the Liberated Land.   To protect Kara Orso, the young woman Connor and Lee rescued, the headmaster sends them to the Second Hall to face the intrigues of the Assembly in her place. Far to the south, the two cadets learn of an old weapon designed to end the war between the dragons and the Liberated Land forever. To restore the honor of his family and renew the hope of his people, Connor believes he must find the weapon and use it to destroy the dragon leader.   While Connor, Lee, and an assemblyman’s daughter scour the Dragon Lands for the weapon, Kara and Tiran are drawn north into the Forest of Horrors on a mission of their own—to find and save one tortured man. To succeed, both parties must face their fears and lean on the peace and strength of the Rescuer.

Man, this series is sooooo good! My nana order the final book for me yesterday and I can't wait until it get here! If I'm lucky I'll get it before we leave this weekend! I hope so! I need to know what happens next!

Characters:
Connor is such a relatable character with struggling to discern the Rescuers will and his own...and I relate to that. He's dedicated, but maybe a little distracted by his own wants at times, but aren't we all?
Lee is one of my favorites and I loved him in this one! And my heart broke for him at the same time...just...poor guy!
Tiran is another favorite! I love him and his growth as a character in this book! I mean, he's just...I love him! Y'all, love him so much!
Teegan is fantastic! She's witty and caring and I love that about her!
Kara is determined, but also still growing in her faith. I related a lot to her struggles and her desire to save her brother was admirable.
Dag was great, even though he didn't have as much page time. I loved him and Paskin...lol...
Pedrig and Master Jairun are awesome!
Aaron was an interesting character...not my favorite...but he was okay, I liked Sireth more. XD
Ianou was awesome!

Romance:
Just some mentions of characters growing close...

Magic:
Gifts from the Rescuer and the dragons have dark gifts that they give such as 'sorcery'...but none of it's weird. Not chanting or anything creepy like that.

Violence/Gore:
This one has a little more on the gore level...merely from injuries that characters receive and one character undergoing what could be considered torture. The descriptions aren't that bad, but sensitive readers might have a harder time with this one. These are definitely books more targeted for boys.

Other:
There are wraiths and ghouls in this one...but they are descibed as being illusions of the dragons. Wraiths are orcs or other ore creatures that have been embued with the dragon fire and thus live longer, from what I understand. They are a little bit creepy...but the descriptions to me aren't any worse than say an orc in the LotR movies.

Overall:
This was another epic adventure! It was so cool to have airships brought into the fantasy world and you had multiple missions going on at one time and new characters popping up everywhere! And this cool vapor that made characters kind of...fly, which was epic! Kara and Tiran were kicking butt!

This is such a fun series and I love the themes and storyline and world!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)

Bear Knight is book 2 in the Lightraider Academy series. This sequel to Wolf Soldier is, in my opinion, even better than the first book. We again get multiple character perspectives, and it’s all so well-written that there was no confusion for me which character’s POV I was reading.

About a year has passed since the adventures of Conner and company in Wolf Soldier. In Bear Knight, we once again follow our characters on various new quests and adventures. Along the way, we are also introduced to a few new side characters who become quite important to the story too.

I felt there was more action, more adventure, more character growth—and along with that—spiritual growth, and a lot more battling the forces of evil in this sequel story too.

As I wrote in my Wolf Soldier review, Kara was my favorite character even though she was just a side character. In Bear Knight, Kara is now one of the protagonists. I absolutely loved seeing her character development and growth during this story!

I also love the allegorical aspect to these books. As characters pray verses of the Elder Scrolls to the High One, the Christian reader is reminded of verses found in God’s Word and of the importance prayer should have in a believer’s life.

I’d recommend this series to fans of The Wingfeather Saga. I feel it’s probably best for readers ages 12 and up.

I’m looking forward to Book 3!

I received an ebook ARC of Bear Knight from the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my honest thoughts about this book.

If you liked the first book, you will like this. If you kinda liked the first book, but weren't totally sold, you might like this better. If you disliked the first book, this one probably won't change your mind.

Bear Knight is an adventure filled sequel to Wolf Soldier. As a lover of fantasy, I thrilled in reading this book. All the elements of fantasy are there that I love, but also the beautiful Truth is interspersed throughout. Though Hannibal warns in his author’s note not to get bogged down in the allegory, I find the allegory my favourite part. To read a fantasy story and find my faith encouraged and strengthened is a wonderful thing. The use of Scripture in the story reminds me to apply these Truths to the spiritual battle here. The loving trust the cast of characters portray in their Rescuer remind me to keep my trust in my Creator.

This series is strong in the principles of faith, is an exciting and encouraging read. I can’t wait for the next stage of the adventure.

Story Enjoyment Rating: 8.5/10 Christian Faith Rating: 3/3

Bear Knight, by James R. Hannibal, is the second book in the Lightraider Academy series. It is a young adult Christian fantasy.

The series follows several young people as they encounter Lightraiders and learn how to train to become one. In this book, they are continuing their training, hoping to become cadets. All the while there are dark things happening in the world, people to be rescued, goblins to be fought and the evil presence of dragons working against them.

This book had loads of Bible references throughout. The Lightraiders say prayers and quote verses to help them in supernatural ways against the enemy. It has some of the highest Christian content in a fantasy book that I have read.

It is very much a fantasy series, and you get thrown into the deep end with multiple fantasy elements thrown at you one after another. There was never a dull moment in this book! However, there were some times when I struggled to keep up with all the new information, enemies and world building that appeared. At times, I found it a bit much. I think if I were to read this book for the second time, I would find it easier, now that I am used to the story and the world.

I loved the characters. I enjoyed the movement between different stories that were taking place simultaneously. The chapters are short, like a thriller, but the scope is more like an epic fantasy.

There is very little to no romance, but a great variety of enemies to fight!

My favourite thing about this book was the Christian faith content, which was strong.

Bear Knight is a brilliant sequel to Wolf Solider, however I do feel as though it would be just slightly more enjoyable for a younger audience as it is definitely a YA/Middle Grade read rather than adult fantasy. The message that unravels in this high fantasy setting is one of hope and faith, and very much feels like a christian take on the fantasy of old.

I love the world that Hannibal has created and his nod to the video game world. I highly recommend it to any video game lovers or readers who do like it a bit old school.

The added perspectives in this book were also a happy change compared with the first book in the series and I can't wait to see what Connor and his friends must battle next.

New dangers arise for the Lightraider cadets...

I've been on a real fantasy kick lately so the release of this second Lightraider Academy novel couldn't have been more perfect timing. After being on tenterhooks for the last year or so I finally got to dive into Bear Knight to find some answers to that cliffhanger James R. Hannibal left me on at the end of book one.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked Bear Knight even more than its predecessor. It was like James R. Hannibal had slipped into just the right groove and had taken the Lightraider Academy tale to new heights – not to mention in a few unexpected directions.

One of the things that I really appreciate about the Lightraider Academy series – and Bear Knight in particular – is that, while it is obviously an allegory, James R. Hannibal has not sacrificed the 'fantasy' aspect of the story. It is a fantasy adventure story through and through with a noticeable nod to spiritual warfare and the Christian life.

If you enjoy fantasy yourself or you have teens – boys or girls alike – Lightraider Academy is a great series to try out. Do make sure that you read the first book before you read Bear Knight. The only problem you'll have with it is the same one that I do...having to wait for James R. Hannibal to bring some more answers in the next book in the series...

The Lightraider Academy recruits have returned from their first mission and are eager to get going to address the growing threat, but the Prime Council is insisting someone come and give them an update/answer their questions. They want to interrogate interview Kara, but Jairun sends Connor and Lee instead. Kara is trying to catch up on finishing her quests so she can stay with the rest of the recruits in her year, but the metalworking one may kill her. As more reports of dragon's minions slipping across the border reach the Lightraider ears, all of the recruits are sent out on quests. And these aren't training runs any more, these are life or death missions to address the growing evil threats.

It is quite hard to summarize this book well. There's a lot going on, and many of the quests start off in one direction and then shift at least once if not twice through the book. There's a lot of moving parts and lots of characters to keep track of. I didn't find it hard to keep characters straight, but it makes it hard to summarize everything going on. I am impressed by Hannibal's ability to give unique voices to all of these different characters. The elements of Christian allegory are woven in very well and feel authentic to the world and not forced. I know nothing of the game this series is based on, but that hasn't hindered me getting into the world or following what's going on. It's a very interesting world, and I'm not sure how much of that is Hannibal's imagination or the game builders, but regardless, it is an interesting world to explore with our heroes and heroines. The crux of the plot is forces of evil versus forces of light and their influence on the land and peoples in the land. Hannibal is a gifted writer and brings this battle of good versus evil to life in a way that sticks with readers. Highly recommended.

Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. There are battles in which some get injured or even fatally wounded. The Lightraiders discern between mindless creatures of evil that can't be redeemed (those they just vanquish) and thinking creatures who could be redeemed and they try not to fatally wound those but give them an opportunity to change. There are some evil creatures that would be creepy to some readers, wraiths and goblins and such. A couple wounds are mildly described and fatalities are mentioned. Battles are not overly gory but they are sobering and take injuries and fatalities seriously. There is a character being tortured by a head bad guy and that is somewhat described (it is a bit disturbing...definitely a reason why this is YA not MG).

Scripture Connection

My enemies will retreat when I call to You for help. This I know: God is on my side!
Psalm 56: 10

Spiritual Themes
I praise God because I asked Him to speak to me through this book and He did! This book was so encouraging, to me. Although the author explores many spiritual themes and references dozens of Scriptures, I chose the above verse because of how well it melds with the plot of the book. Over and over, the characters encounter the forces of darkness and cry out to the Rescuer. Over and over, he delivers, and Hannibal makes it abundantly clear that the characters do not have an inherent capacity for victory. Their strength and deliverance is from the Rescuer.

In addition to the theme of rescue, Bear Knight also displays the beautiful glory of redemption, alongside forgiveness.
Characters are always praying, and these prayers are typically taken right out of Scripture.
As in book one, we see a physical manifestation of the Armor of God, as the Helper (the term Jesus used for the Holy Spirit) equips His children for battle. (Jesus is referred to as the Blacksmith).
Each of the four sections also begins with a key verse as an epigraph.
Note:
Bear Knight is the sequel to Wolf Soldier in the Lightraider Academy series. This book is NOT a standalone. In fact, I would encourage others to read the books as closely together as possible, because the book really jumps right in where book one left off.

What I Liked
I’m so glad that James R. Hannibal was the one to write this book. Ordinarily, it’s a given that the author would “be the one” to write a book, since he is also the creator of the storyline. In the case of the Lightraider Academy books, the premise originated differently, as the book series is based on a Christian roleplaying game, DragonRaid.

With that said, I am indeed glad that Hannibal is the writer of the series, because he is such a skilled craftsman. He has this way of drawing me along as I read, and then I get near the end and do a double-take: Wait? What did you just pull on me? I’m not sure if I would enjoy the books nearly as much if someone else had written them.

As mentioned above, the Scripture references are simply littered throughout the text. I could probably flip to a page at random and find a verse (or several verses) excerpted within the chapter. I found this to be deeply encouraging, as well as helpful. As I traveled alongside the characters, watching their battles and witnessing their prayers, the verses took on a more clear, practical meaning in the context of the story. Although I probably won’t be doing battle with a granog, anytime soon, I see many examples of crying out, when faced with my own “granogs.” Overall, the verses became more real to me.

Although I will occasionally read books with magic, especially if it is presented as a gift from the creator (such as in To Be Called Worthy), I am very sensitive to content, both in and out of fiction, where characters gain specific powers by saying specific words. Even when those words are prayers, it feels close to witchcraft, to me. With that said, I do not have this hesitation with Bear Knight. While the characters did utter specific phrases in specific circumstances, it felt more like a liturgy: taking comfort and strength in God’s words and promises. Characters knew that their words wouldn’t force the Rescuer’s hand.

Name Discussion (SPOILERS)
This is quite possibly conjecture, but after my experience reading The Paris Betrayal I am very watchful for allegory/retelling with this author… He does say not to get “bogged down” in the allegory, in the Author’s Note, but Hannibal’s work is thought-provoking and I do like to trace significant meanings.

Connor Enarian is introduced as a shepherd, a pretty standard biblical occupation, in book one. Add that to the fact that he’s from a royal bloodline in part two and I’m making associations with King David. As an aside, I also just learned that Conor can mean “lover of wolves,” and a name that is very close to Faelin means “little wolf.” Kara, appropriately enough, means “beloved,” while Teegan refers to a “little poet.” Orso, as I suspected, means “bear.”

End of Spoilers
Back of Book Resources
Following the text of the story, there is an appendix of additional resources: First, a phonetic list of names for pronunciation cues, then a list of locations with descriptions of their defining characteristics, and finally a glossary of terms. Had I utilized it, the glossary would have been helpful in jogging my memory of book one, as it defines the various enemy creatures (i.e., golmog, wraith), among other things.

Following the appendixes, there are instructions for playing the game “Vanquish,” a game we watch the characters playing on a pool table. My book also came with two starlots: multi-sided dice.

After the game directions, there’s a note from the author. As in book one, there’s a discussion, among other topics, about how the Scriptures are not being used as spells and Rescuer chooses how to use His power.

Discussion Questions
Discussion Questions are not included in the book. However, this is my hint to the publisher that I think they would be a great thing to include with subsequent releases. There is so much fodder for discussion in the books, not to mention a ton of Scripture to think about.

Content
The one content note pertains to my favorite part of the book, which is the Scriptures. Because of the way they are used in specific contexts, I think this could be valuable fodder for discussion, in terms of the fact that these verses are not spells, but practical applications AND that the Rescuer decides how and when to act.

Recommendation Status
I read in one of Hannibal’s biographic statements that he seeks to write Christian fiction for boys. Prior to reading that, I hadn’t realize what a gap there is, in publishing those titles. While I feel comfortable recommending Bear Knight to boys and girls, alike, I would especially recommend it for a male audience. There are a lot of battle scenes, which made parts of the book slower for me, as a female reader.

I’m so grateful that Hannibal writes for boys and I’m even more grateful for the rich Scriptural references embedded, throughout. This is a title I gladly recommend.

Bear Knight by James R. Hannibal, comes out February 14, 2023 from Enclave Publishers, and it’s Book 2 in the Lightraider Academy Series.

In the tradition of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien this fantasy is layered with deeper meaning and allegory throughout. Where Lewis and Tolkien shy away from direct reference to Biblical scripture, Hannibal includes the Word as a believable world building technique. These masterful strokes of storytelling encourage readers that their faith can be more than intellectual belief, it can be lived out.

Those masterworks draw readers from diverse backgrounds into the fantastic worlds of Narnia and Middle Earth. While they can reveal a deeper meaning through proper analysis, the message is often lost. Hannibal’s fantasy land serves as a gateway to bring many believers into those other stories’ lands with renewed purpose, and to welcome longtime epic fantasy readers into a realm that embolden’s their faith.

War is brewing, and new threats have emerged in Keledev.

Hannibal ushers readers into a vast world with each passing sentence. There is depth and breadth to the culture, landscape, and history that is made known through clear language and majestic descriptions. Keledev, the Dragon Lands, and other surrounding regions are part of a living, breathing world. The reader senses there are very real consequences for the character’s actions, decisions, and beliefs. Readers gain the satisfaction of solving puzzles and riddles alongside the characters, in much the same way roleplaying games spool out adventure threads. The entire story will let readers feel what its like being part of a grand adventure!

The author has developed a unique language for the world, and makes great use of it when translated to English. The Lightraders display their knowledge and ability to wield Biblical scripture similar to the way other fantasy characters wield magic spells. It brought me a lot of pleasure and encouragement to watch the characters live out their faith through bold and courageous action. In fact, the faith demonstrated by the characters makes readers believe their faith can be lived out too!

The moral and ethical lessons, drawn from Biblical scripture, are not so overt or on the nose as to be overbearing. Rather, the lessons feel natural and are well presented through the strong actions of characters, and the analogies illustrated in the world around them. Readers will understand the message being shared without feeling like the narrator is preaching.

Wolf Soldier, Book 1 in the Lightraider Academy Series, introduced many larger than life fantasy elements. The author has even more imaginative surprises tucked into Bear Knight. (Flying ships! Flying bears!! Flying armor!!! What!?)

Returning readers will enjoy picking up the story thread of Kara who discovered her faith in Book 1. In Bear Knight, she discovers her heritage and her important place in the fight against evil.

The exciting conclusion sees all the characters drawn together from their separate adventures to confront the manipulative forces of evil one more time. The tale satisfies as it wraps up, and promises plenty of adventure ahead!

I can’t say how much I loved this book! It was amazing, just like the first one. It was so fun to see how the characters changed from the adventures they experienced in the previous book. The growth they had in their faith was such an amazing way to portray how trials should affect our faith in the Lord. The story flowed so well and I had to keep reading to find out how things were going to end. This story does have quite a few characters but I did not feel lost at a single point in who the section was focusing on. The trials each character faced were relatable and really made me feel connected to them. I loved the themes presented throughout the story because I think it is a great way to express to a younger audience the challenges facing believers when speaking with those who are not saved. It wonderfully demonstrated the love and compassion we should have for them rather than feeling anger or hatred.

One of my favorite aspects of this series is the faith element the author is able to weave and has crafted to be a fundamental part of how the characters face their challenges. The usage of prayer and Scripture are so inspiring and to see the cadets lean on their Savior to work His will, even if they do not see how it will benefit them at the time, is a wonderful reminder of how we should be resting in God’s sovereignty. Honestly, I could go on and on about this series because I think it is so amazing. For parents, if they read it with their children, it provides a wonderful opportunity to open the chance for discussions on deep matters of the faith. I would highly recommend it for all!

Warning: As I stated above, I think this would be a great series for parents to read with their kids but there are some elements that some parents might want to be aware of before reading. There are magical elements to the story: the dragons look through their creatures eyes and speak into the minds of others. There is also some sorcery used and evil creatures who take the appearances of ghosts. These are all, however, shown to be evil and against the teachings of their Rescuer (the God figure of the allegory). In the author’s note at the end, it is clearly stated that the Lightraiders do not use magic and they are relying on the Rescuer in His power. Due to this distinction, I still think this series would be wonderful for all children to read. There is also violence but it is not glorified or graphic.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

For fans of fantasy this book should be one you will want to read. It has adventure from the beginning and pulls you into a world where danger lurks at every corner. I loved how the author uses intrigue to keep readers glued to the book. I do recommend if you haven’t read the first book, you should grab a copy and read it. It lays the foundation for this book and introduces you to the characters who face dragons, danger and battles that are epic.

I’m excited to see my favorite character take a lead in this book. I love how Kara has grown in skills and matured in critical areas that help her stay focused on her tasks. She seems better equipped to follow through with her mission and impresses me as a leader now. I like how the author has given her a keen sense of knowledge and listens to her instincts better. Overall her growth in this book is impressive and I applaud the author for developing this character to a degree that screams maturity.

As Connor returns from his mission, he finds Kara in tears. What has caused her such sorrow? He soon finds out and suddenly he has been chosen to take her place at Sky Harbor. She should be happy that she doesn’t have to go. Now she can concentrate on passing the Five Quests. But she wants Connor by her side because it gives her more confidence. Looks like we will be following these two characters as they go in different directions to complete their tasks. Is Connor ready to leave Kara so quickly?

Amidst all the creatures and unexplained battles the author gives us many lessons that follow closely to what we as Christians are taught. For example Kara talks about faith. She is learning that she may face danger but when she “sits in love while fighting,” she is learning to love her enemies. Her faith keeps her grounded. She is taunted by someone who says her maker doesn’t love her. We all know the enemy wants nothing more to have us believe that we are not loved so we turn our back on our faith.

The book is an adventure in constant motion whether it be learning how to forgive or fighting against evil. I loved following our characters as they both stand with strength and faith to conquer what is trying to stop them from their quest. The author leaves us with a cliffhanger that makes me anxious to read the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

These novels take me back to the 80's when I played the allegorical RPG they are based on, but with much needed and appreciated updates to the worldbuilding and the allegorical imagery. All of that on top of Hannibal's excellent plot and character development that keeps the pages turning. These are YA novels, but they are a fun read for adults as well. I'm in my 50's but am enjoying them thoroughly. I am especially impressed with Hannibal's use of a fantasy language to do the Wordrunes in battle situations rather than trying to quote scripture perfectly in a fantasy world. This is a genius way of bringing the scripture in through summary without quoting them as "spells". They are very clearly not that and Hannibal is careful not to present them as anything other than the prayers they are meant to be. And the Dark Creatures are much better in this new iteration as corrupted nature rather than the original game concept of a planetary penal colony for the galaxy's scum and villainy. This new form of dark creatures takes it out of the Sci-fi arena and puts it solidly back into the fantasy genre and makes better sense theologically as well. I enjoyed this book even more than the first, jumping right into the action with characters that are a bit further along the training arc. The first book, as is typical for these kinds of stories, loses a lot of momentum in the first half with all of the cadet training. This one also had more plot twists that kept me engaged and few surprises and losses I didn't expect.
Overall, these books are excellent for young people (Jr. High I think is the sweet spot) who are raised in a Christian family that has enjoyed Narnia and is looking for the next adventure. They have many points of instruction on the Christian life without being too preachy and keeping the action and plot moving forward and they inspire young people to love the Word of God and memorize it's content while understanding that the Christian life is part of a greater story of spiritual and cosmic warfare between good and evil. I highly recommend them. Looking forward to Lion Warrior and playing the new version of the game with my grandkids one day! Thank you, James Hannibal for this wonderful, rich new world of fantastic Christian allegory and high adventure!

Master storyteller James Hannibal returns to the Dragon Lands and all the dangers that reside there. After the first book introduces a new recruit class to the Lightraider Academy and the dangers with dragons, the action continues in this new installation. After destroying a dragon portal, the cadets are tasked to keep their eyes on the Dragon Lands and continue their training. Here begins the new book: while watching the Dragon Lands the recruits keep bringing back Aladon villagers who have listened to the Rescuer and answered His call. But there is a concern that villagers keep disappearing from a number of different villages. Where are they being taken and why? And now the Council wants a report at the capital on what is going both in Keledev and the Dragon Lands. With the group split in multiple directions, they must rely on the Rescuer and their training to find the answers and come out of the battle alive.
James Hannibal crafts a new world that draws the reader in to learn more. The characters bring this new world to life. The pages continue to spin past as you shout warnings of danger, cheer on their victories, call on the Rescuer with them, and keep looking for answers. Hannibal keeps the reader guessing until the very end just how this new danger will end. Will the group lose a member? How will they get past this new, bigger dragon? The adrenaline is pumping, the heart pounding as the story unfolds. With so many snares to get past, I couldn't believe when I was only half way through the book. How to make it through the second half with the adventure so high! Through all the battles and danger, the cadets continue to use verses from the Ancient Scrolls and prayers to the Rescuer. He is the reason for fighting so hard, success to come and strength to continue the battle. The only bad part of this book for me was that it ended before I was ready for it. I am already anxiously awaiting book 3. It is already on my must read list! This book is great for teens or a mature 1-12 year old. I received a complimentary copy of this book. If you’re looking for a book for a young adult in your life (think teenagers or 12 and up) this book will fit the bill. This is the second book in a series with book one being Wolf Soldier (I reviewed that one too if you’re interested!). Let me tell you now that this book will not make nearly as much sense if you have not read the first book. This book takes some of the characters from book one and expands on them. So, to get the most from this book and the series read them in order. And trust me when I say you’re going to want book three as soon as you finish this one. But, unfortunately, it is not out yet.

One of the secondary characters in the first book becomes one of the primary characters in this one. So if you read the first book be prepared to say hello again to Kara. She was a great character in the first book and I often felt like I wanted to dig deeper into her story. And we get to do that now!

This book does multiple perspectives. But it does it in a great way so you’re not confused and wondering who you’re listening to at each point. I’m not always a fan of switching personalities but this is a wonderful example of how it can be done.

If you’re looking for a series this is it. I think this might be one of my favorite fantasy fiction novels and that’s saying something. Confession, I liked book two better than book one from this series which gives me high hopes for book three!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Bear Knight is a YA Christian Fantasy by author James R. Hannibal. Bear Knight is installment #2 of the Lightraider Academy series.

Aaron Ilmari, along with others, was a watchman. In case of war, they were to defend Keledev.

The reader may remember Teegan and Tiran from installment #1, they are back along with Connor Enarian and Kara Orso. If Kara can pass the five quests she will be headmaster. Throughout the story, Kara and the others are learning to trust the Rescuer.

The dragons seem to be causing trouble. Did the dragons defeat the Maker? Did Connor carry unnecessary burdens? Burdens meant for the Rescuer?

YA will love the fantasy world of Mr. Hannibal as they live vicariously through the characters. Mr. Hannibal has done a fine job with the characters and the settings. I appreciate that the back of the book has the pronunciations of the individuals and families. There are also definitions of terms and locations.

Quote: The Rescuer is greater than any enemy. Let his peace fill your mind and heart.

I give Bear Knight 5*/5*.

If you enjoy Lord of the Rings type books you will enjoy Bear Knight. James Hannibal has written an excellent fantasy series that is deeply rooted in Scripture. I loved how adaptations of Scripture verses were sprinkled throughout the story and used as ways to bring the character’s focus back to God. Readers may want to note these verses and use them in their own lives.
When I read sequels in a series, I always wish for a “previously in…” section. I usually find this section is crucial to understanding the subsequent books. Bear Knight does not have a section like this, however, I had no problem getting into the story. In fact, I think you could read and enjoy this story even if you haven’t yet read book 1 Wolf Soldier.
Hannibal’s characters are ones readers will grow to care about. Readers may also be deceived by some of the characters in the same way other characters are.
Dragons, orcs, goblins, ghouls, wraiths and more represent the evil sphere in this story. Those who follow the Rescuer represent the good sphere. There are also talking animals. The story contains many elements of epic fantasy - good vs. evil, a quest (or 2), mythical characters, and a world created by the author.
Bear Knight could easily find a place in a K-12 Christian school fantasy section. It is appropriate for middle and high school. Adults may enjoy it as well.
I received a complimentary copy of Bear Knight. This is my honest review.

Admittedly, I checked out Wolf Soldier(and DragonRaid) as a lark. What I found was a genuinely interestingly created world and a loving made extension in the debut tie in novel. I think the sequel exceeds the original. It’s written at a great tempo with brisk vignette chapters. These are very engaging and action packed. There are move POV characters than the first book and one is in first person which clashes against the rest of the prose. I wonder if sticking to just Connor and Kara’s POV would have been smoother? Kara gets way more focus in this book, which is great. Her parts we’re my favorite in the original and I’m enjoying her growth as a character.

I do think the allegory is too on the nose and may be off putting for some. But I also found some elements more compelling. For example; some of the saved people of Keledev leaving twice a year on ships into the unknown, rejected their liberated land, felt like it spoke to the human condition. However, the question of what happens to them is answered and I wonder if it would have been more impactful if it had been left ambiguous. But we’ll see where the the third volume takes this development.

Overall, it’s a good time and a fun adventure. I look forward to the next volume. Not sure if this is intended to be just a trilogy but this setting would lend itself well to a ton of one off novels and short stories.

Bear Knight by James R. Hannibal needs to be read after Wolf Soldier since this is a fantasy series, and this is the second book in the series. Plenty of description to keep readers actively involved in the happenings inside Keldedev and the other places that the magical portals take the lightraiders to. Being a fantasy novel, readers will want to see skills, animals, and places that defy everything our world stands for. Hannibal did a wonderful job at crafting a world with similar elements, but weird enough for readers to completely believe in. While reading the story, there are plenty of moments of downtime and high action. Tunnels exploding. Goblins chasing. Quests that need to be overcome. If readers had read Wolf Soldier, then the characters are familiar. Even some new characters that make the story more interesting. A touch of romance that MAY occur, but nothing close to a sappy romance. Thank goodness! If readers enjoy allegorical stories about the cross, then this is a good book right up their alley. I thoroughly enjoyed both novels of this series that I have read currently.

What I think you should know:
Bear Knight by James R Hannibal is Young Adult Fantasy. It is the second book in the LightRaider Academy Series. The series is based on DragonRaid, a Christian Role Play game that was available for a short time in the 1980s. The author has created new stories and games to go along with the original. This story takes place a year or so after Wof Soldier ends. I do not recommend reading this book first as it follows the characters and events from the first book.

What I think you should know:
I do not recommend this book for younger YA readers.

What I think about this book:

This book started off with a confusing chapter and character that drew me right into the new story. I like how this book was less predictable than the last. This book had everything it needs for a YA reader to be captivated. With both strong male and female characters it should appeal to everyone. I really appreciate the adventure and mystery the author has woven into the story.I enjoyed this book more than the last and look forward to seeing what happens next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Bear Knight by James R. Hannibal is a work of Young Adult fantasy. This book is the second book in the Lightraider Academy series. Bear Knight takes place roughly a year after the first book Wolf Soldier ended. Kara and Connor continue growing and moving forward with their quests. This series is based on a game I really knew nothing about, but I loved the way the plot and characters were developed.

As a Christian, I recognized numerous Scriptural references throughout the book. I also appreciated the twists and turns this book took. Sometimes characters are stronger together, and this definitely appears to be the case with Kara and Connor. But being sent on separate tasks often provides the opportunity for characters to grow in significant ways.

I believe this book is best suited for older youth, and I also believe many adults who enjoy fantasy novels will also enjoy this book and the series. I also recommend reading the books in order to get the most from them. So check out Bear Knight by James R. Hannibal and the Lightraider Academy series for yourself.

If you liked Wolf Solider, you'll enjoy the story's continuation in Bear Knight!

Bear Knight picks up around a year after the end of Wolf Solider. At first, I was a little confused by the time lapse, but figured it out quickly.

Bear Knight follows the core group of characters from Wolf Solider, as well as introduces some new ones. I liked how Kara's character arc wrestled with forgiveness. Hannibal did a nice job with it, and it felt pretty authentic.

While Wolf Solider followed one main plot thread, with two POV characters, Bear Knight balances four POVs, all following different plots (for the most part). While all of the POVs and plot threads made sense and added to the story, it did make the book feel like it was hopping around a little. I maybe would have cut Aaron's POV? Though it is needed at times. . . There was one point where the pacing of the plot felt off, but it soon made sense why (the pacing wasn't off, but spoilers 😉).

The book ends with danger looming on the horizon for our characters, which will doubtlessly unfold in the trilogy's conclusion.

Cautions: light romance; non-graphic moderate violence

Bear Knight is book two in the Lightrider Academy Series that written by James R. Hannibal. This is a young adult fantasy book. I have read the first book in the series. I would read them in order because they it will all make sense. My 11 year old son and I read this book together and he was super excited to get the second book in the series.

Bear Knight has a lot more action and adventure in it. There is a war is brewing. There have been new threats have emerged in Keledev. Kara takes central stage in this book - it was fun to see her grow. When Connor returns from his mission - he has also grown and evolved. Kara will have to face her fears in order to save herself and others.

The author has a way of drawing you in within the first few chapters. The book has lots of action and adventure, which my son loved. We can't wait to read more from this author. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

I enjoyed reading James R Hannibal’s first book from the Lightraider Academy series, Wolf Soldier. I was excited to continue the series with the newest installment, Bear Knight. I enjoyed this one even more than the first book. It was great to take this adventure once again with the characters in the Dragon Lands. I was intrigued and fascinated with this story and liked it.

Bear Knight will be getting four and a half stars from me. I believe teen readers who are fans and lovers of fantasy and science fiction genre will want to give this one a try. It is definitely worth a read. I am looking forward to seeing what else James R Hannibal has in store for his readers in the next installment from his Lightraider Academy series.

I received a digital copy of Bear Knight from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Bear Knight is the sequel to the equally amazing Wolf Soldier. The Lightraider Academy books are based off of a video game that I have no experience with. I am continually in awe of how well the author has placed Christianity into this fantasy realm. It is a superb example of world building.
In the first book, I believe my favorite part was when they discovered they had the spiritual armor we read about in Ephesians. In this book, it's the bears. They have kept history in oral stories so well that a bear recognized a family she'd never smelled, because she had been told what their scent is like.
The book doesn't just remind us to remember what God has done for us/His people, but it demonstrates how to hear God, war through scripture & so many other things. It's said this can be a discipleship tutorial & I will not dispute that. These books are exceptional!! It's a fun way to better understand the kingdom of God. YA, but I'm 52 & I love the books.

While I had read the first book in the Lightraider series, I still did not expect the journey I was about to embark on when I started Bear Knight. Fantasy has always been a favorite genre of mine, and Bear Knight has easily risen to the top five of my favorite fantasy books.

The first book, Wolf Soldier, builds the world and lays the necessary groundwork for Bear Knight, so I'd recommend reading it first. In Bear Knight, we see beloved characters again. While they are still learning, they also have gained more wisdom, strength, and confidence, aiding them in the dangers that lie ahead and risks that they are forced to take. However, they all recognize that the wisdom, strength, and confidence that they have are gifts from up above, from the Rescuer, and rely on their faith in Him throughout the novel.

I absolutely love the way Hannibal weaves faith into this novel, reminding me of both Narnia and Lord of the Rings. If you are a fan of either, I would highly recommend you read this book. You will journey with characters such as Connor, Lee, Zel, Kara, Tiran, Teegan, Dag, and many others. You will travel on foot, on the back of a bear, and in the air. You will fight unworldly creatures with strength from the Rescuer. And you will be left in the end, reeling from the experience, but also left hanging, not knowing what will happen next.

Bear Knight is Book 2 in James Hannibal’s series Lightraider Academy. It is jam-packed with adventure and excitement.

Time has passed since the ending of Book 1, Wolf Soldier, and the characters are back with more to say. The multiple storylines may give a confusing appearance, but Hannibal expertly navigates through the different perspectives. I was able to keep up and understand what was going on.

I know many people have said this, but I loved seeing Kara’s character develop in this book. In the first book, she was kind of a side character. You didn’t really get to know her that much. However, in this book, her true colors really show. I loved watching her navigate life and find out her role. I love seeing her grow.

I highly recommend this book! 10/10!!!

Ah, book two of this series. If possible, it surpassed book one. I absoultqly loved it. You do need to read Wolf Soldier, first. Our young heroes from book one are back, facing dragons and horrific battles. The forces of darkness are at war with the light. Faith, scripture is up front and poured into this story. It's in every chapter, almost every page, but never in a way that shuts down the reader or stops the flow of this amazing adventure. I would give this more than five stars if I could. Oh, and while the author is writing with boys in mind, don't shy back because it reaches everyone!

Thank you Celebrate Lit for my digital copy. This review is mine. A positive review is never required.

At one point, Bear Knight had five different story lines going on at once. I set the book aside until I finished the other two books I'd been reading. Then I returned to this one.

The splitting up the friends into small groups divided my attention, but also my attachment. In the first book, I fully invested myself into the shepherd and his eventual friends. The lack of that camaraderie hurt.

Bear Knight is still a good book. The endless torture to the prisoner confused me since the story didn't tell us why he had to suffer until the end. I guess the tension wasn't where I expected it. Okay, I confess. Once I knew why he suffered, I still didn't get it.

But I completed the book. It's a good read. But it isn't book one.
