Sinclaire Silver

Ten years ago, the vampire mob enforcer ‘Kid Midnight’ retired. Patrick was glad to hang up his suit and find a new life with the family that chose him. All he wants now is to live his life, run his bar, and keep his best friend from getting himself killed by hooking up with the wrong vampire. Nevermind that sometimes he finds himself wishing it was him that Zach was hooking up with. Maybe a lot more often than he should.

Six years after crash landing at Patrick's bar in the supernatural neighborhood of Chicago, Zach is working to build a life he can call his own. He's almost finished a degree he doesn't hate, he has a steady stream of vampire hook-ups, and friends that are better than anything he could have hoped for. Still, there are downsides to most of your friends being much older immortals. Zach knows they have secrets he's not entitled to, but it would be nice not to feel like they were talking over his head like a child in a room of adults. After a one night stand turns life-threatening disaster, those secrets start to boil up and send his life into a tail spin.

Both are finding that there are some things you just can’t walk away from, no matter how hard you try. When the supernatural crime boss of Chicago threatens Patrick's hard won peace, he has to make a choice- go back in, or burn it all down. Can he protect Zach from the shadows of his violent life, or will their burgeoning romance put Zach in the crosshairs of a new conflict brewing just under the surface?

This MM, friends-to-lovers, paranormal romance is a high heat, rough around the edges romp through a supernatural Chicago underworld. You can expect snarky friends, cuddle puddles, kinky, spicy love scenes, disaster gays, all of the hurt/comfort, and a happily-for-now.

Note: Sinclaire Silver is the first book in the Shadows of Chicago trilogy and part of the larger world of Shadows' Nocturne. It is meant to be read first in the series.

This was such a sweet and sexy read! Paranormal romance meets the Chicago underground was the perfect blend for me. Main character Patrick is a retired mafia enforcer and vampire, who is just trying to keep his head down and run his bar. Human Zach is a frequent customer and friend trying to make his own way in a big city. Sparks immediately fly between these two, but when Patrick's past threatens this current relationship, there could be hell to pay. I'm very happy to see this is part of a trilogy, because I adored not only the main characters, but the entire cast in this found family.

DNF @ 1%.

One might think it was the over-describing of eye colour that made me quit. Or maybe it was the POV head jumping from one paragraph to the next. And while those are both valid reasons, the answer is “never didn’t”:

He could look old enough to drink if he worked at it, but never didn’t get carded at any bar but his own.

Sinclair-Silver is a mafia, vampire/human romance. Patrick is a vampire who was once a mob enforcer. He left that life behind and is happy running his bar. Zach is a human that spends his time with Patrick at the bar. When Paddy is called back to the mob, he has no choice but to go. Patrick and Zach have a complicated friendship. Zach likes his vampire hook ups and Patrick puts up with it as his friend but secretly pins for him. Once the two men get together there is a lot of spicy steam! Dare I say this, a little bit too much. The story is really good, it does hook you into it. Patrick and Zach have quite a menagerie of friends, witch, shifters, vampires, etc. The secondary characters are colorful and a true found family. They’re close knit and will do anything for one another. Overall, a great read, well written with a lot of smexy times!

‘Sinclaire Silver’ is a darker urban fantasy, male/male romance set in Chicago with events revolving around Patrick’s (Paddy) bar. The main cast of characters includes Patrick (vampire), Zach (special human), Dani (cat shifter) and her lover Morden (Wizard), and Mordred (Seer). There isn’t much in the way of tertiary characters and the protagonists only make brief appearances until the climatic conclusion. Patrick and his made family are interesting and I would have liked to have had Morden and Mordred a bit more fleshed out – where did they come from, how did they hook up with Patrick, what made them part of “the family”?

The Chicago setting was underplayed, and the setting could have been Any Big City. One thing I love about urban fantasies is being able to track where the characters live and the places they go and I didn’t get that here. Chicago is a cool city! Play with it!

I did have several niggles with the editing – there were odd changes in the point of view, where character A would say or do X, then it would shift to character B repeating the same scene, but from their point of view. Which, unfortunately, made aspects of the plot repetitive and confusing. Patrick and Zach both carry some emotional turmoil and angst which seemed to surface the most during the sex scenes. One or both characters would start internally monologuing (note above sentences) and I would forget they were having sex! And lastly, there were instances of conflicting information and dialog, for example, Patrick stated at one point he wasn’t sure when he realized exactly who Zach was, that it took some time to figure out. Then a couple of pages later Patrick stated he knew the moment Zach walked into the bar.

Overall, ‘Sinclaire Silver’ is an interesting book set in Chicago with a variety of paranormals. Patrick is a retired vampire assassin trying to start over but is getting pulled back into the mob life. Patrick has relationship and angst issues he needs to work through in order to move forward with Zach. Zach is an enigma to the rest of the “family” at Patrick’s bar and has his own angsty emotions to work through. Dani is rock-solid, and Morden and Mordred remain mysteries. Recommended if you like darker romances.

This book is packed full of MM spice! Best friends to lovers! A vampire trying to live his now quiet life as a bartender and a human that feels too young compared to his supernatural friend group/found family. They give each other a try right as the past reemerges to threaten everything they have built. The path of revenge may be the only road to a new, safe life now or it will be the end of everything, again.

The characters are all queer themed and done tastefully. The side couples I definitely want to see more of in the next two books. I adore Dani! I want to see so much more of her.
Also, another important note, the book is more of a comfort read. The stakes are high, but the characters don’t suffer. This was a nice thing rather than the bad thing always happening to the main characters.

Trigger Warnings: Violence, Blood, Drug Use (mentioned), Sexual Violence, One Night Stand Turned Violent, Explicit Sex Scenes, Trauma, Suicide Attempt (mentioned), Alcohol Abuse, Death of A Past Lover, Blood Play, Bite Kink, Breath Play.

More like 3.5

The characters and story were great! I really liked the environment of Chicago’s supernatural underworld, the variety of magical species both central to the story and hinted at on the sidelines. The main characters were compelling and all of the relationships were lovely!

I just think the book would have benefitted from more thorough editing. Some of the paragraph breaks made it unclear who was talking. Often when the pov switched, the narrative would return to the beginning of the moment, making the timeline somewhat choppy. I’d be halfway through a paragraph when I realized actions were being described for the second time, which was disorienting. The dialogue was also somewhat stilted and unnatural at times. Many of the more emotionally heavy conversations had a lot of psych vocabulary, making it seem more like a clinical therapy session than a discussion between friends.

This book sounds so interesting but I’m confused how anyone’s reading it. The head hopping between character POVs makes this rather impossible to read. It’s weird that this book was published jn 2022 and head hopping POVs is still a thing. I thought that was a thing of the past.
