A relationship between a grandfather and his precious granddaughter is a magical one. Doing things together definitely makes for lasting memories. The author has combined successful components in crafting a warm, tender loving story about Jody and her Granda planting twelve pole beans around a teepee-like structure, watching them grow. The watercolor illustrations enhance the charm of a sweet vegetable patch, along with a very white curious cat. Our family loves the book!

1. I love books that captures cause and effect.
2. Another great book for summer and spring I love incorporating leaning with the outside.
3. This book lends to the beauty of children who have grandparents who takes great pleasure in teaching a skill to children.

Extended Activity
(advance planning)

I would like to gather some large barrells or planters and secure them with screened wire for the outside. I also would collect a variety of seeds or seedlings beans, tomatotes radishes, some of the faster gwowing plants for students to plant and harvest to enjoy for a snack of a meal. I think that this will be a great opportunity for children to understand where their food comes from and how it is grown. Also I think this is a great way to help promote healthy eating.

I found that this book incorporated real useful information about gardening (particularly beans) along with a sweet narrative story about a little girl and her Granda. Jody's Granda is teaching her how to plant and care for beans in her garden and continuously encourages her along the way until they are finally able to reap what they sowed. The watercolor illustrations are creatively arranged around the page in various styles. There is an index at the end to serve as a resource for children when planting their own beans. The story is from Wales and I used it in my multicultural bibliography featuring stories portraying inter-generational relationships.

We just randomly found this one at the library last week, and every day during reading time with the kids I sneak this one into the pile. The kids like it and I'm enchanted by it.

Very charming with the Irish "Granda" and perfectly suited for this time of year with the planting season just beginning.

The Granda comes to visit Jody and brings her pole bean seeds to plant a bean teepee. As the seasons of the year make a full circle, more is burgeoning than than the pole beans (as one sees the mother's tummy bulging a little more with each illustration). Very sweet!

Cute picture book about Jody' and her Grandda who comes and brings seeds. Jody wants to know what they are and her Grandda says, "Wait and see." The story goes through what she does to get the beans to grow and in the end has a wonderful crop, and a future one. In the pictures in the background you see Jody's mother getting bigger and bigger with child, until finally the baby arrives. A great story for gardening.

A lovely story about growing runner beans and gardening, patience, a warm relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter, and the wonder of growing plants. Would be a fun story to give as a gift with a packet of runner beans to a child interested in gardening.
