Corbin has ignored the voice most of her life. Until the small, dirty wooden box arrives, that is. Convinced it’s just more junk to add to her mother’s ever-increasing hoard, she finds herself caring for this inanimate object more than she should.
When she takes it upon herself to pry it open, the voice grows louder. Shadows dance on the walls at night, flies cling to the windowpanes, and what’s worse, others begin to notice.
Drawn to the mysterious entity that’s haunting her, the line between her reality and this new one blurs. Every day, her imaginary friend becomes more and more real, and with her mother’s history of mental illness, Corbin fears the worst.
Six has always been there. Waiting. Watching. Gathering strength.
He only desires one thing: her.
Between the encouragement of her closer-than-best-friend Jordan and the aching need to be near the box that fills her every waking moment, it is becoming more difficult to pretend it’s all in her head. Little by little, Corbin cannot resist diving into the deep, dark abyss with her nightly visitor, but at what cost?
Some doors should not be opened.

Honest ARC Review: Wow this was quite the rollercoaster adventure! To start off I loved the writing style and the descriptions in this book. They were so creative and vivid and gave this story a very moody and dark vibe. Corbin is the caretaker to her mentally ill mother and a student at an art college. She has been stuck in this role for a majority of her life and although she doesn’t complain it can be very difficult. On top of dealing with her mother Corbin has had a voice in her head for a very long time. She has refused to acknowledge it and struggles to feel sane because of it. When she receives a gift it seems to amplify the voice. She starts to see more things and hears him more. The struggle of her everyday responsibilities and the growing intrusion of the voice cause Corbin to have a bit of a mental breakdown. With the help of her best friend/fwb and the creature she is able to finally see what is truly real. This book was really unique and had a lot of push and pull. It is a slow burn with a little bit of spice but it is more about the building of relationships. I do feel like things were left a bit up in the air and I wish we got more answers but I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

Shudder, the first book in the Shadow & Ink Series By Nikki Rae is a unique and totally enthralling slow burn paranormal romance that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew just to find the answers you so badly need! Rae truly has a gift for words, and I am 100% there for it!

“It echoed like a secret prayer uttered in the dark corners of a mausoleum. A poem written and closed in a book with the ink still wet.”

Our heroine Corbin has lived quite the life, having to grow up at an early age to care for her mother, a woman trapped in her own world and struggles with mental health, as well as dealing with her own questionable actions. Such as mysterious voices and shadowy images that call to her at night. However that suddenly changes when her mother brings her home a special gift—A strange wooden box that seems to enhance the voice she’s heard since childhood as well as the images, leaving her to question her own sanity…

But luckily Corbin is not totally alone as she has Jordan, her best friend and sometimes something more, by her side to help her discover if she’s slowly losing her mind or if she’s right where she needs to be…in the safety of her shadow monsters arms.

This was definitely a heart wrenching, gut churning on the edge of your seat build and I loved how the story flowed and unraveled before our eyes. And I absolutely loved how beautifully Rae created two varying relationships for Corbin and how each connection flowed so beautifully in the story, with both Six and Jordan each providing exactly what Corbin needed.

Overall I think that if you like paranormal thrillers, romances outside of the norm and books that leave you with so many burning questions and a die hard need for answers, then this is the one for you! Just be sure to definitely check trigger warnings if you have any concerns as Corbin’s life wasn’t an easy one. But if you like dark and twisty plots full of spice then this is the one for you!

*received an ARC in exchange for honest review*
I absolutely love paranormal monster romance, so you already know I ATE this up. I really liked the mild horror elements in this book. From the very first sentence in the book I was super intrigued. If you’re looking for some shadow play and a mysterious entity that can please you, give this a go. I also thoroughly enjoyed the FF and MFF spicy scenes, plus the “touch her and go crazy” vibes were immaculate. Most definitely a slow burn, but one of those that gives you just enough spice in between to keep you going till the end. At one point I even wondered if I was going crazy along with our FMC. The ending I definitely was NOT expecting, but also not disappointed about it either. I am stoked to see what Nikki does next!

Just kinda ends right when it starts to get interesting. I get cliffhangers but this didn't feel like one it felt like a pause button. Nothing really got resolved and the main character didn't have much of an impact on the plot, she was just there for the ride.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Nikki Rae!

Shudder is the first book in The Shadow & Ink series and tells the story of Corbin.

Nikki Rae is one of my favourite indie authors because she has this unique way of telling a story. The way she writes and what she creates is so cool, and I’m always excited when I can get my hands on her latest book. Shudder is a Paranormal Monster Romance, and it was previously published on a different name, The Crow Box. I read the original version and it was so good, but the new version is so much better. I’m so happy that Nikki decided to rewrite this book, because this story is so unique and interesting!

Shudder is about Corbin, an artistic girl who’s been hearing a voice and she’s trying to figure out who or what the voice is. Shudder talks about a lot of things, not just the voice. This book also talks about a difficult parent, a best friend who also comes with some benefits and art. Corbin has a different life than most people, and that makes her so interesting. I could also really relate to her, and like her, I was so interested in the voice, and the other things relating to that voice…

If you’re looking for a unique Paranormal Romance, then I highly suggest Shudder. This book made me feel a lot of things, and I’m anxiously waiting for the second book in The Shadow & Ink series. Hopefully it will be out soon! I’m really happy that Nikki Rae decided to rewrite this book and give it a new look, because this story really deserves a lot of attention and love!

Not all doors (or boxes) should be opened…can this one ever be closed?

Corbin has ignored the voice most of her life. Fully understanding her family’s mental health history, living it everyday, she’s tried to resist. But when her mom brings home more junk, a small, dirty, wooden box forces Corbin’s hands. Encouraged by her best friend, one of the few people she trusts, Corbin seeks comfort in the box, and the voice. But is it really what it seems?

Guys. This book is tough. Like gut wrenching and mind bending. The mental health trauma is so real and vivid- check the trigger warnings. But it also so real and acutely accurate it feels like Nikki has poured so much of her heart and soul into this book.

Add to the realness some spicy scenes, MFF, why choose, and a split tongue…go on!

I want to add I’ve read several of Nikki’s books now and what really makes me love her writing and stories is that I don’t love everyone. And I question the character’s integrity on so many levels which makes for such complex stories. If the narrator is an unreliable source, how can we trust the story? But if we can’t trust the story we’re left to question what’s really happening. And I love it. It makes for an engaging and dynamic reading experience.

And Nikki knows, I had to read the ending a few times…can’t wait for more!

“Do not fear me, little crow.”

Rating: 4/5⭐️
Spice: 2.5-3/5🌶️

🪶 THANK YOU Nikki Rae for allowing me to read an ARC 🫶🏻 This was my first paranormal romance and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. But I really enjoyed reading it. It is very unique and intriguing and a concept I’ve never read in this manner before. I’m excited to see what happens next!

🪶 Make sure to check TWs before reading. This book contains: mild horror elements, mental health/illness, s/a, trauma, “mommy” issues, c-ptsd, light cnc, psych ward setting, drug use/drug use during sexual acts

🪶 Corbin is a heart-warming and strong character. Her story is heart-wrenching and impacted me in ways I never expected. Her struggle to figure out what’s real and what her mind makes up, to find a connection and not truly know if it’s real or not, to finally feel safe…this journey left me speechless🥺

🪶 Six took me by surprise. I wasn’t sure how I felt when I first started reading. He’s very cryptic which made me skeptical 😂 But he’s sweet and caring. His and Corbin’s connection and hers with Jordan is precious and needs to be protected

🪶 Y’all this is a slow burn and I was weary at first, cause y’all I’m impatient as crap, but it fit really well with the story. If y’all are looking for a unique and beautiful story make sure to read this book!🖤🖤

not at all what I was expecting!!

Ok. Let me start by saying I’m a dingbat. I was supposed to read this as an ARC, but I completely confused it with another ARC and was late reading. Instead of reading the ARC vs, I read the KU so Nikki can get something out of my absent brain.

By the time I read it, I had no idea what it was and didn’t even reread the blurb. All I knew was it was PNR.

I was not ready for this book! I had so much fun and it isn’t similar to anything else I’ve read so far.

I also really liked that- at least for myself as a reader- you still don’t know 100% what is going on, but you are not so clueless that it doesn’t make sense.

If you like suspense, questioning reality and sanity, with LOTS OF SPICE including FF (go sexuality!) then you should try this out!

5⭐️ Reread Favorite
4⭐️ Absolutely loved it
3⭐️ Complaints but kept me entertained
2⭐️ Characters or major plot issues
1⭐️ More than majors issues

I’m kind of unsure how I feel after reading this. It definitely drew me in with the “horror/thriller” vibes in the first part, which was enough to make me read it in one night. (I’m notorious for DNF-ing).

Although, one thing I dislike about stories like this, mysteries/thrillers/angsty/horror/whatever you want to call it, is that there’s so much mystery and it does get grating to learn next to nothing throughout the story. I understand there’s supposed to be a series out of this, but that’s just how I felt.

Plus there was a lot of back and forth with the main characters that I felt was unnecessary. But I also am not the FMC (although I like to tell myself I am).

Anyways, I still don’t know how I feel about this. However, I did read it in one night in 2 sessions so I’m sure that says something. I’m rating this 4 stars because I’m in a good mood and hell, I read this and couldn’t put it down easily.

this was the one and only dark mode syk book i had expectations for and as i read through a few frankly disappointing books from the syk, i grew worried this would disappoint me too but 🥁🥁🥁 IT DID NOT

while family issues are not my favourite premise, i found reading this book pleasant. i only caught one mistake and nothing else, nothing that irked me or distracted me from simply enjoying reading. then again i can’t really be objective considering my type in men is paranormal shadow creature so like 🤷

characters were nice, the relationships were nice, the plot was okay. there wasn’t really that final push that made this book excellent for me but it was an enjoyable read if you like to get freaky with shadows

i have not read any other books in the series but i can already say this and whatever the sequel is should’ve been one single book

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to BETA read for this book and let me tell you... y'all are going to love it!

The plot was compelling and sucked me right in. Nikki is such an immersive writer and builds a story that you don't want to put down for a second. It had me questioning everything and begging for the second book. This book is relatable asf (hi, mommy issues!) despite being in the paranormal/monster genre.

I'm also obviously a sucker for a monster spice and Nikki delivered with this slow burn. Who doesn't love shadow play, wings, and horns? If you've never read anything by Nikki, I definitely recommend diving into this and The Order series.

I’m anxiously looking forward to the second book but I will tell you I am so confused 😂 Strangely enough though I’m not mad about it. This story has so much mystery and suspense your constantly going back and forth with yourself; ‘is this real or is it all in her head’. I think this has the the tiniest bit of a horror element to it which I really enjoyed!

Our FMC is in charge of taking care of her mentally I’ll mother And has to grow up very fast which I think alot of ppl can relate to which leads to a lonely life she’s leading. One day her mother brings home a box and that’s when the voices start..again.

I have never read something like this before. the main character is very plain. there is not really much plot. the main character hears a voice. she has been trying to ignore that voice her whole life until now... now she wants it.
there is a lot of focus on mental sickness and the mental health of multiple characters in the story.
it actually got quite interesting in the end but that's where the story ends. I bought the second book before I read the first and I'm not even intrigued to start it, and I'm a nosey person.
please read the trigger warnings, there is a lot of stuff going on in this story.

Shudder Review

Six....a girl could happily walk into madness for your devotion. You are why the darkness feels like home. I have waited patiently and I am ever grateful to see you again.
This story takes it's time building slowly, weaving in and out of sanity and madness making you question what is real and what is not right along with Corbin. But oh is it worth traversing the labyrinth for him. If you like your stories dark and your love interests darker then this story is for you.

I just loved the writing and creativity in this book! Corbin goes through and has gone through so much in her life taking care of her mother. Jordan and Corbin have this amazing relationship that shows how much they truly care about each other. Throw in Six, and he’s this mysterious shadow that is quite scary at first. The shadow play and growth of each character makes for one epic adventure. There’s spice, mystery, MFF, FF, MF, and all sorts of twists and turns. I cannot wait to read book 2, Slither!

This one was a DNF for me at a pretty early stage unfortunately, I just wasn't getting anything out of it or exited to continue reading. I got this free on stuff your kindle day and it sounded interesting and I love a good dark romance but the story just wasn't progressing at an enjoyable pace for me if that makes since. The story wasn't gripping me and Corbin's character felt kind of flat. The writing is pretty and filled with descriptive words, but I just don't think the story in combination with the writing is doing anything for me.

ARC REVIEW 🖤

I love Nikki’s writing style and this book was no different. Paranormal monster romance that has me needing the next book in this series ASAP! Corbin is so relatable with her personal struggle and family issues. Six … well I have sooo many questions about him! But totally loving the way he cares for Corbin, although sometime frustratingly cryptic. Can’t wait for more!

Corbin has taken care of her mother who has problems with her mental state since she was young when her father left both of them. Corbin has been hearing a voice nightly as long as she can remember. After her mother brings home an old jewelry box the voice becomes more. Corbin begins to wonder if she is becoming sick like her mother or who or what the voice is. Is the voice real? This ARC draws you in and holds your attention can't wait for more!

man... this was trippy, uncomfortable, and confusing. and i kind of ate that up. this was twisted and grim in a way that I've never experienced in a book before, which was really cool!

unfortunately, i didnt mesh at all with any of the characters, but I am so intrigued that i simply must continue. i have so many questions that I need answered so I am picking Slither up immediately. I'm hoping it'll have more plot and lore 🖤

This was a book I dived into knowing nothing about. It was definitely different to what I usually read. I found it was fluid and made me question who Six is and what his true form is. Corbin and Jordans friendship had me melting. So sweet.

Six can say the sweetest things!

Definitely a good read if not a little strange. 8/10

very odd book. I really had to push myself to continue. the story line started to pick up right at the end. the plot line jumps around quit a lot. I do like six and his devotion to Corbin, it's just all very confusing and chaotic which I'm assuming is the authors writing style and her intention. it just wasn't my cup of tea. I will read book 2 in hopes the plot line clears up.
