Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
The Canary juggernaut progresses further. The story or the horror seems to be taking hold. The last cliffhanger left us with an SOS from the depths of the mine. A mine that the natives absolutely forbade to be opened pun threat of death. There was a hint of heavy metal effect or actual spooks in the mix and this volume delivers. The politics start coming forth and we have another cliffhanger. The stories are short and leave a lot of expectations at the end. The series is progressing beautifully.
Part of Prime currently, so why not read a comic, graphic novel that's a science fiction horror Western. While it's entertaining, do like the U.S. Marshal Azrael Holt character, didn't find all the weird violent stuff happening in the Utah mining town Canary disturbing. Just feel this would be a much better read, reading the entire story verse in segments as this one was released and it loses effect or at least I thought it did.
"No, Enoch predates the bible. It tells of the fall of angels from heaven to earth. Celestials who fall in love with humanity too deeply, want to mate with us, make a new race of being, part man, part God. They're cast out by God, sent crashing into the earth, where they disintegrate, become void."
This time we go back to the old-west, around the time of the formation of the Union. When a horrific killing of a teacher occurs, the infamous Marshal Holt is called in to investigate the crime. When the clues point to a church going young boy the mystery deepens.
Further murders in local towns start to point to the copper mining town of Canary, where Holt is viewed as a hero due to past exploits. The town however, has a dark past with a number of minors and the mine owner being killed in a collapse, years before. Teaming up with a scientist, Holt has no choice but to confront his past and journey to Canary.
Arriving in the town, the pair find there is an agenda to put Canary back on the map but the local saloon owner, and daughter of the deceased former mine owner, has her own ideas and teams up with the duo to reveal the truth behind Canary and the mine collapse.
When their equipment shows there may be survivors from the collapse, trapped in the mine for over 7 years, the town erupts into a hive of activity as the major senses an new opportunity to make Canary famous.
Right up my street, with a horror feel and supernatural edge, this gets 5 stars.
Instead of getting answers to the questions the reader has, we get more questions. In truth we do get some some answers, but they are not all fully explained. Another cliff-hanger at the end. The story moves forward, and as usual, it get’s more intriguing with each issue. My only real complaint was sometimes I found it very difficult to determine who is speaking, and in a few cases, what is happening. This is a serial, so make sure you start with issue 1. The art, as usual, is quite spectacular. I particularly liked the first view of house. Great job.
Scott Snyder, does not write a bad book. His love of the horror genre is beautifully mixed with classic Cowboy Western story telling, the type of book you can imagine Classic Clint Eastwood playing the lead role in the film adaption.
A page turner and one that keeps you guessing how the story will evolve.
Is this the last volume? If it is, I feel a bit cheated as it's just a massive glaring cliffhanger without any answers found. Slightly annoying to get invested in the mystery of a story and instead of cleverly untangling it, the end is a horror cliffhanger. I guess the volumes are a bit genre defying but I do like a resolution.
And that's the last one available! Shoot! Pretty freaky conclusion to the issue, and again a wild cliffhanger. When is the next book coming out? Are we dealing with vampires? Aliens? Demons? Who knows? Oh, well, it was a fun ride.
Book 4 in the Canary series does everything right and builds up the story with ever increasing dose of suspense only to end up offering the same old shock ending that one can expect. Let's hope the story gives a fresh twist in volume 5
Love the fact that this is a weird western, and the main character is pretty cool, but the big draw here is the artwork. These comixology originals are a mixed-bag but this one seems like it could be pretty decent.
The plot thickens as the pace quickens. I would prefer an anthology with the whole story, but is a small problem. The setting, plot and artwork is great.
The voices in the wells revealed one survivor. But is he really alive or something else? This volume explores the family links and the secrets that was long been kept.
