More Discerning - Volume I: A Pride and Prejudice variation novel

Rate this book
This story starts at the famous assembly in Meryton.

What would change if some of the characters,
the two elder Bennet sisters especially,
were better judges of character?

If they were more discerning?

How would that affect the chain of events,
the other characters?
Would the couples reach a happy ending?

This novel looks at this very idea:
What if Elizabeth were what some of us
always wanted her to be?

***

‘Really interesting story! Clever and well-written!’
'I like this Elizabeth better…'
‘What a great story!’

I enjoyed the author's first daring variation effort so I was pleased to try her next release. Not as daring, but still an engaging premise. Like the title says, the Bennets are more discerning which makes some of the big conflict moments that came in the original P&P softer.

But, a conflict that was lesser in the original is stronger in More Discerning. Darcy's internal struggle to overcome his need to do his duty by his family leads him to turn his mind, if not his heart, away from love and happiness for what he thinks he owes his family.

I loved the way this Darcy embraced Elizabeth's more garish relations, the Phillips, and this kindness is rewarded in a big way when a man set on destroying Darcy's reputation with lies tries to work his wiles.

As with the earlier book, this one has some editing issues and glaring modernisms that can and do distract. But, weren't enough to put me off the story. It leaves things up in the air with the promise of volume two coming shortly.

Those who enjoy low-angst sweet variations are the target for this one.

Good story

A good story, but has errors in grammar that are jolting. This author has a great deal of promise, a good editor would make all the difference.

It is a partial story and I look forward to the sequel.

truly deserves 3.5

As the title says the characters are more discerning that Jane Austen depicted; even Mrs Bennet is quite likeable. I didn't like that it split into volumes.

Also the author threw in some jarring modern lingo, I think Bingley said he had "a lot on his plate".

Enjoyed it.

An interesting premise and emotional story in this variation inspired by author Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Kinga Brady. I look forward to seeing what happens in Book 2.

I read the free sample and put it down as a maybe. Pricey for only half a story. There is more explanation than plot in the free sample, jumping here and there. The author seems to be setting out to educate the reader, explaining what terms mean, why the characters developed the personality they had, what the Regent did, what class differences existed at the time, the history of the Netherfield estate...

There is also a character list that explains who Fitzwilliam Darcy is and a summary of Austen's original plot which may be useful if you are unfamiliar with P&P. But realistically, how many people who never read Austen and need these explanations read Austen variations? Every JAFF person I know already knows all this stuff.

The "More discerning" is lovely. A couple things were incorrect: recipients in the Regency paid to get their mail--they did not pay to send it. A very expensive express was the exception. Hussy and get the hots sound like late 20th century low register slang (they've both been in use since the 18th century--they just feel jarring, to me) -- Althugh I suspect, well raised Gentlewomen would not have used those terms. Mr and Mrs Bennett are somewhat redeemed in this tale.

More Discerning by Kinga Brady is a refreshing take on a beloved classic. I really enjoyed how the story explored the “what if” idea of Elizabeth and Jane being more perceptive. It gave a new layer to familiar events and made me look at the Bennet sisters in a different light. The writing felt clever, engaging, and true to the spirit of Austen, but with a twist that kept me hooked. I especially liked this version of Elizabeth she was sharper and even more enjoyable to follow. A really satisfying read for any Pride and Prejudice fan.

Great book. Slow at times but I love that this author had the Phillips play a role. Great use of an opportunity.

A nice adjustment

The book follows Elizabeth and Darcy through the early part of the book while Darcy is in Meryton. In this version Lizzy sees Darcy's discomfort around people early and allows him the benefit of the doubt after his insult. By keeping it between her and Jane, Darcy has a chance to improve his standing in the neighborhood. By the time Wickham shows up, Darcy has a few people who like him, this changing the storyline with Wickham. Through all of this Darcy and Elizabeth continually get closer, leading Darcy to fight himself and Lizzy to slowly get melancholy as she realizes Darcy has to leave and she can't marry him. However, Darcy's friends tell her not to give up on him. It is a sweet, strong emotional development story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was so annoyed it was divided into two parts but since the second part was already released I let it slide . This will probably be a re-read for me.

So far so good

This variation sees the Bennets as more discerning, less flighty and even more pragmatic. in constrast, it is Elizabeth Bennet who seems more emotionala dn affected by the gentleman who slighted her at the Meryron Assembly. and wheb Elizabeth fell, she fell hard.

This is the first installment of a story written in two parts. Volume 1 is a good read so far with an ending having our beloved couple unsure of their feelings for each other.

A commendable effort by the author

Enjoyed it but needs a sequel. Lizzy and Jane are smarter and better at sketching characters in this one.

Good parents and not much angst.

Good parents and not much angst. I like Mr and Mrs Bennet in this book, but frustrated that it has been split into 2 volumes (are you trying to be like Jane Austen when she originally wrote them in volumes?) I will read the 2nd volume but only because I recently signed up for kindle Unlimited.

loved it!

It is interesting to see how just one character deciding not to be quick in judgement and another keeping their eyes open to possibilities can have a Domino affect on all the P& P events. This variation is vivid as well as heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. I cannot wait to move on to the next Volume to continue to bask in this alternate P&P reality.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. A different writing style and a slow start to a very enjoyable story. This novel invites the reader on another adventure, with a little rearrangement of its events. There are two volumes, this is Volume 1, newly edited, extended version, (some 8000 more words). This story starts at the famous assembly in Meryton. What would change if some of the characters,
the two elder Bennet sisters especially,
were better judges of character? If they were more discerning? How would that affect the chain of events, the other characters? Would the couples reach a happy ending? What if Elizabeth were what some of us always wanted her to be? This variation sees the Bennets as more discerning, less flighty and even more pragmatic. in constrast, it is Elizabeth Bennet who seems more emotional and affected by the gentleman who slighted her at the Meryron Assembly and when Elizabeth fell, she fell hard. Miss Jane and Elizabeth Bennet are quite the judicious young ladies, they became more observant than in canon. They question more, they are more aware and alert. Jane finds her feelings engaged but is convinced to be prudent about her future and Elizabeth becomes more vested in her future but faces heartache. Mr. Darcy is even more circumspect but fight very hard against his inclination. Mr. Bingley is also different where it matters, he eventually takes control. Jane and Elizabeth's Aunt Phillips and Uncle Phillips emerge as heroine and hero! Who knew! Mr. and Mrs. Bennet transform as we read. The other Bennet daughters, Mary, Kitty and Lydia are the recipients of their renewed regard for each other. Lydia especially receives a shock. It has an ending with a cliffhanger, having our beloved couple unsure of their feelings for each other. I was so annoyed it was divided into two parts but since the second part was already released I let it slide. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I highly recommend to everyone.

The story has a website with many interesting pictures, information, and links to help you imagine the novel’s world. You may find it here: https://morediscerningprideandprejudi....

Good ideas

I started reading this thinking I'd make my mind up after a few chapters. Further reading proved it had some really good ideas, changing the actions around a few points in the original. My interest made me forget the story was in two parts and we have to wait for Part 2. The story was very good though sometimes I had to make sense of the sentences with words the wrong way round with just a few words which were altogether wrong. This doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the story though and I will look for the second part when it's released. I got Part 1 on Unlimited and hope Part 2 is released the same way.

More Discerning is the Pride and Prejudice variation I didn’t know I needed. It keeps the heart of Austen’s world but gives the characters a refreshing depth of insight—especially Elizabeth. Instead of misunderstandings dragged out for pages, this Elizabeth observes, thinks, and grows in the most satisfying ways. Darcy, meanwhile, becomes all the more compelling when seen through this sharper lens.
The prose is elegant, the re-imagined choices feel organic, and the emotional beats land perfectly. It was like reading Austen but with a touch more warmth and psychological richness. An absolute delight for any true P&P devotee.

I really like the use of more discerning. Just a couple of clarifications: in the Regency period, recipients paid to receive their mail rather than to send it, except in the case of very costly express services. Also, terms like hussy and get the hots have been around since the 18th century, but they feel more like late 20th century slang in tone and I doubt well bred gentlewomen would have used them.

Kinga Brady does an excellent job reimagining the Meryton assembly and the ripple effects that follow when key characters are more perceptive. The story remains true to Austen’s tone while offering meaningful twists that keep the reader invested. The character development is strong, particularly for Elizabeth and Jane, and the altered chain of events is both believable and satisfying. A smart, well-crafted variation that invites reflection as much as enjoyment.

Good storyline, bad writing

While I like where the stories were going, the writing was frustrating. On any given page it would skip from narrative, to story telling, to 3rd person, to any POV without notice. It was hard to keep it straight.

I had to stop reading after only a few chapters. The issues of syntax, punctuation, spelling, and word choice rendered it unreadable; I kept having to reread sentences or sections to make any sense of them.

I enjoyed this first part, loved how Lizzy s and I especially love how Mr. And Mrs. Bennet are together. I like how Wickham was put in his place though I doubt we’ve seen the last of him. Loved how Bingley came into his own, I actually like this Bingley better than the original. Great first part.

I absolutely loved how this story reimagines Pride and Prejudice. The author kept the spirit of Austen’s world while giving us a more perceptive Elizabeth and a fresh look at familiar characters. Smart, clever, and deeply satisfying!

Delightful retelling

A very interesting take on a beloved classic. Better editing would have raised the rating from 4 stars to 5.

This author has proven that you can have the fiery relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy without all the angst. I didn’t think it was possible but now I wish there were more books like this one.

Well, I managed to get through the first volume because the writing improved a bit. Started the second one and thought I could get through it until characters started saying "uh" all the time. After running into this what felt like 20 times in 15 pages, I gave up.

Not enough story to keep me interested. Elizabeth was more forlorn and mourning with few glimpses of her lively character.
