The Fake is the fourth book in Rebecca Jenshak's 'Smart Jocks' sports romance. I love new adult and I love sports romance, so this series has been a real win for me.
Nate is one of the guys on the team with Wes, Joel, and Zeke. We don't know much about him, but in the last book, I feel like we got a bit of insight. He's Gabby's best friend and has something in his past that haunts him. Nate has responsibilities and a past, but he's a really fun-loving guy.
Chloe is a new character to the series and is an athlete herself. After a scandal at her last school, she's transferred to Valley her senior year to play volleyball. Her teammates/roommates don't respond to her well... until she has a night with Nate. She panics and tells the girls he's her boyfriend, and there the fake dating begins.
I love the fake dating troupe. Nate and Chloe have a lot of chemistry. They go from having a one night stand, to becoming friends who are fake dating, to falling in love. It was a really sweet progression. I listened to the audio book which was narrated by the dream team of Jason Clarke and Ava Erickson who did an amazing job voicing Nate and Chloe. I've listened to this entire series on audio, and I can't recommend the audio books enough.
This series has been so enjoyable to listen to. Though it looks like this book is the final book, I hope Jenshak decides to write more sports romances in this world.

What is it about Rebecca Jenshak's books that just make me giddily happy every time I finish one? She has this knack for writing completely addictive sport New Adult romance that I fall head over ovaries for and The Fake was no exception! I simply ADORED Nathan and Chloe's story.
I've been a huge fan of this series since discovering it early this year, and it seems like it only keeps getting better with each book. Because I think The Fake was easily my favorite of the Smart Jocks. There's just something so incredibly endearing about Nathan. He may have the looks and the talent on the outside, but he's struggling to hold his family together and keep them afloat after the passing of his father. His desperate need for money leads him to a terrible decision that almost costs him everything. On the cusp of dealing with the repercussions, he meets Chloe, a girl dealing with her own personal demons.
Chloe is a recent transfer who's desperate to make a name for herself on her volleyball team and gain the trust and respect of her teammates. Tarnished with her parent's mistakes, she's still struggling to prove her worth. Money has never been a concern for this rich Cali girl. But proving herself and stepping outside of the stain of of her parents money and privilege has been a struggle. Nathan is the perfect storm that she never saw coming. He holds the answers to what she needs. Her teammates love him and she's desperate for her teammates acceptance. The answers? A fake relationship. Only it's not as fake as she tries to make herself believe.
Nathan is such an incredibly sweet guy. He's absolute perfection. I couldn't get enough of him. He's an endearing combination of cocky and vulnerable; sexy and sweet. His treatment of Chloe and the way that he was always there for her just warmed my heart. Chloe was wonderful in her own right. She's strong, smart, and incredibly loyal. I loved all of the secondary characters along with past favorites that make cameos. The Fake delivered on the feels and the steam and I loved every single page of it. I'm obsessed with this series! If you haven't read it yet, you're seriously missing out.

Loved Chloe & Nathan!
I’m so sad that this is the last Smart Jocks book, BUT I think that Nathan was the perfect Valley U basketball player to end the series. His story is fun and sweet, but has a bit of an emotional edge to it. For his heroine and him especially. It’s senior year and Chloe is a new volleyball player transfer that comes with a rumor mill and something to prove. Nathan has stuff going on that no one really knows about and when it comes to light you’ll just want to hold him. I love how Rebecca used some things that are going on in real life for the college sports world and put them in the book. Putting a spin on them that makes it feel more relatable.
I don’t want to say too much, because this one is just good to experience as you go. There are a few fun tropes, and a few new things I haven’t even read before. But all in all this is a great college sports romance, with a hero and heroine that you will root for.

2.75 disappointed stars. I really enjoyed the Smart Jocks series, especially books 2 and 3, but this one was sadly almost a miss for me.
Too many things bothered me from the start:
NATE SELLING DRUGS. Running the risk of losing your scholarship and ruining your future? Sorry, does not compute and makes Nate kind of an idiot. Even if he wants to help out his family/his brother. (He only stops because he us caught.) This was the biggest issue I had which seriously diminished my enjoyment.
HIGH-SCHOOL-LEVEL BITCHINESS/BULLYING from a volleyball team member. ‘Nuff said.
Chloe staying away from Nate. She clearly likes him and the association also helps her escape being ostracized from her team. Don’t get it. The flimsy reason she needs to “prove herself” first? That she needs to know she can do everything on her own? Prove what to whom? Can do what on her own? Be miserable and an outsider?? Puh-lease!
FAKE DATING IN EXCHANGE FOR MONEY. At some point she suggests fake dating Nate to gain her teammates‘ acceptance but since he needs money, she’s paying him for his time. Uhm, can you spell g-i-g-o-l-o? Couldn’t they have agreed to fake date and later she just offers to help him as his friend??
Chloe denying her feelings for asinine reasons. She maintains, despite clearly falling for him, having a boyfriend would somehow hinder her attempts to “belong” and even sees dating Nate as a weakness she can’t control. She says she wants to find her place at Valley and cement her spot on the team and to do it on her own. Why would changing fake to real dating prevent that? (Also, newsflash: By faking a relationship you’re already not doing it on your own!) I really don’t get it. I don’t mind a good “will they, won‘t they” (emphasis on good) but her reasoning was just dumb.
The quick change of heart. Suddenly she decides to tell Nate she likes him for real. I mean yay. But it sort of came without a convincing explanation. And I read those pages leading up to it 4 times.
Luckily, the second half of the book mostly redeemed itself to me as it was focused on a really sweet love story. Though the inevitable relationship complication is entirely predictable, it is resolved nicely and without too much drama – always a plus in my book.

4 - "Hot and awesome." Stars!
Book four, the final book in the Smart Jocks series (cries uncontrollably) gives us Nathan’s story, basically the party boy from the previous three books, his life is literally unravelling in front of his eyes in this one. Enter stage left, Chloe; new-girl, and someone who is trying to get her life back together by moving to a new college after her life also spectacularly unravelled at her previous one, albeit through no fault of her own.
"Who are you hiding from…"
If you have read the previous books in the series you’ll know Nathan somewhat, the author kept most of the details on the down-low but as a reader you know all is not well on the home front, that he is struggling financially, and taking some pretty big risks to keep his head above water.
I don’t want to go back to being ignored after being seen again…
The two of them find something in the other that makes each day a little easier to bear, and although their relationship starts out as fake, it soon morphs into more than either anticipated it would become.
I’m still hoping this thing will turn into something real before our fake relationship is over…
Again, like it’s predecessors The Fake was an easy read, the characters were mainly all people we have gotten to know in the previous books, so it was literally like catching up with old friends, my only struggle was with the way the seedier side of Nathan’s life was dealt with and how it was so easily resolved, I think I expected a little less ease in relation to how the whole situation played out, that said this is fiction so who am I to judge too harshly, I still enjoyed it in general either-way.

A great end to a stellar series, one that will always hold a special place in my heart, because it is the one with which I discovered Rebecca Jenshak’s awesome writing.

Jason Clarke and Ava Erickson are two of my top favorite narrators and they knocked THE FAKE out of the park. Ava has such a melodic, young voice and performs her characters so well, she's perfection for New Adult romance. And we all know that Jason's sexy, deep voice is pretty awesome.
With that out of the way let me get to the heart of this story. Chloe and Nathan were adorable. Nathan had some growth to do over the course of the story an he did it beautifully. With his little brother being in school and his mother without a job he is the main provider for his family and always struggling to make enough money to make ends meet. Enter rich girl Chloe.
Chloe never lacked for money but her issues aren't material. After being kicked out of school she's transferred to Valley and that's not how she imagined her senior year. While her parents mean well, buying their daughter's way into college isn't what endears you to your fellow students and Volleyball teammates. That stain doesn't go away so she's having a hard time connecting to people at Valley. I loved Chloe's resilience, her strength and willingness to forgive, not just Nathan but her teammates too.
Before Nathan met Chloe he was used to taking the path of least resistance. Fighting for Chloe changed all that. I simply adored how Nathan treated her. He was head over heels in love with this girl and showed her with everything he did how much he cherished her.
If you love a good, low-drama fake relationship trope in your sports romance don't hesitate to grab this one. It's sexy, flirty and wonderfully sweet with absolutely endearing characters.

From all the books that i read in this series, The Fake, is i like less. This book is meant for new adult audience. I still love the idea of the hero character is actually a talented and smart men. And not man whore.
Nathan is no difference. He has a traumatic past that left him with guilt. When he met Chloe, he feels he is given hope to redeem himself. Chloe also have past that she is running away from. Both of them fix each other. Overall it is sweet story. Its just the banter and conversation, not entirely lit a fire on me. I found some of it boring and meaningless.
Despite that, I still enjoy this book OK

‘I don’t want to be the guy who saved her, I want to be the guy she chooses.’
There’s nothing better than becoming so attached to a series and watching the characters grow through each of their standalone books, and every book in the Smart Jocks Series by Rebecca Jenshak has made us just as eager for her next release, and The Fake, again reminded us why we love this series so much.
Brimming with friendship, loyalty, camaraderie, sweetness, heat and just enough drama to make us catch our breaths, not overpowering the story, the characters and the romance we love so dearly.
‘Every day since the day I met her, she’s made me want to be better, but I can’t hide from the shitty things I’ve done.’
We met Nathan Payne in previous books and he was a man with a mountain of problems, who, we saw come crashing to earth, leaving us intrigued as to how his story would play out. As far as fake romances go, this one worked so well. We felt the chemistry…oh, boy, did we feel the chemistry between Nathan and Chloe Macpherson, but the reason for their fake relationship made sense.
‘I need someone to save me from falling for my fake boyfriend.’
Of course, we all know when there’s a huge attraction physically it’s hard to resist, bring the heart into the equation and it’s damn near impossible!
Chloe Macpherson is a new student at Valley U, having left her previous college due to a bit of a scandal which is quite a topical subject now outside of fiction. However, being the new recruit into the Valley U Volleyball team isn’t going to be easy, the girls, and the captain, Bri in particular take exception to what they feel is her ‘free ride’ into their team thanks to her wealthy parents.
Nathan Payne is in a quandary. Left to pick up the pieces after his father passed away, Nathan feels it’s his responsibility to ensure his Mum and brother, are cared for. Financially, Nathan can barely make ends meet – what with basketball practice, games and schoolwork and keeping his scholarship, he doesn’t have many hours to hold down a job and worries constantly about his family.
‘Money may very well be the root of all evil but being without it fucking sucks.’
Could a fake relationship between Nathan and Chloe be mutually advantageous? Maybe. It’s worth a try, and so the fun, romance and passionate encounters begin. Chloe and Nathan are absolute sweethearts and we defy you not to become swept up in their story!

Rebecca Jenshak really has hit a slam dunk with this series. We’ve loved every book and every couple so far, and Chloe and Nathan certainly charmed themselves into our hearts. We’re happy to see the series will continue and the author has left the door open for quite a few new characters to receive their story, and we’ll be eager to read them. So I had this idea that Nathan's book was going to be heartbreaking. After the bits and pieces I had picked up from him as a secondary character I knew that he had issues at home and was absolutely the least fortunate of the white house boys. And I guess I made assumptions. And I was pretty much wrong on most of them.
The things I learnt about Nathan in this book made me hurt for him but not in a sad, broken way. Because Nathan was so much more than I thought. He was so sweet and all the stupid things he did were done innocently for the right reason. And I was such a massive fan of his throughout the whole book.
And Chloe was pretty great herself. Her story hit pretty close to some recent news headlines and I have to admit it made me think about the other sides of the story. Chloe acted exactly like I imagine most young women in her position would but with a lot less wallowing in self pity.
I adored these two together. And I really loved seeing it all work out so perfectly in the epilogue. And as always it was great to catch up with the other couples. I really hope that this series never ends.

Awwwww I'm bummed because back down my rating goes 😭, I was bored.....a LOT. The h annoyed me because the H was so great and I was like girl you're wasting a good man like damn stand aside let me get a chance! Then I remembered he wasn't real so I had to continue scoffing at her hesitancy and her reaction to the drugs just irked me. All in all, not bad but unfortunately it didn't stand up to the reread test 😔

In the present Nathan has been selling drugs to help support his mom and younger brother. He's busted by his coach but is allowed another chance. At a party he meets new volleyball senior transfer student Chloe who has been shunned by her teammates because she was kicked out of her old school after it's revealed that her parents basically bought her way in. Nathan starts talking to her, they get drunk and have sex. When Chloe's roommates see Nathsn Chloe lies and says they're dating in order for her new teammates to like her and give her a chance, she pays Nathan to go along with the fake boyfriend plot but soon real feelings develop in the fake relationship but Nathan's past actions come back to haunt him and Chloe has to face the consequences

I've enjoyed this series and this one was no exception. It was a good solid read with the typical aspects of college life as Nathan and Chloe fall in love
We see the guys and gals of the previous books and meet new characters who I hope get their own stories told
I'm already eager for the next book and hope this author maintains her H's as they've been in this series and doesn't stray into the typical manwhore, cheaters so prevalent in romancelandia

The Fake is my new favorite book in Rebecca Jenshak's series of interconnected standalone college sports romances. From cover to cover, I loved every bit of this story of two college athletes agreeing to a mutually beneficial fake relationship. Of course their attraction is FIERY and their chemistry is off the charts and the feelings are REAL, but with neither believing they're in any position to commit to an actual relationship, things are left unsaid, the sexual tension is bubbling, and the push and pull is addictive. I couldn't get enough of this storyline.
I LOOOOOVED Nathan. Like, LOVED him. I don't even know what it was about him specifically but he's my new favorite leading man from this author. He is the sweetest, most devoted boyfriend even though he doesn't want to be. He's quiet but with the biggest heart and I was here for all of it. The attraction between him and Chloe was everything I didn't even know I wanted in a story and I enjoyed it so so so so much.
If you love college sports romances, this is one to bump up your list. If you love the fake relationship trope, the pretend dynamic that is all too real even when the characters won't admit it, this is the book for you. If you love a storyline full of sweet flirtation between characters dealing with real world problems, I can't recommend this one enough. I've read the previous books in the series but this one didn't work for me unfortunately. It couldn't hold my interest so I had to dnf it. I'm not going to read the next book in the series.

Although I loved the previous books in the Smart Jocks series, I just really can't get into this one. It sucks because I like to fully read a series when I start one, especially when the start of it is pretty enjoyable. The premise in this one was very shallow and immature. I don't mind fake dating but pair it with highschool level bullying and idiocy, it's just not enjoyable. I'm too old for this.
Also I found the reason for fake dating was pretty dumb. Chloe wanted to appear cool in the eyes of her new roommates and volleyball team. sometimes all you need is a good sports romance 🫶
Surprisingly this book made me feel a lot! The premise is a bit cheesy, but at the same time highly entertaining 😹
I liked the fact that the hero, Nathan, was struggling with money and had his own insecurities. It's not often a hero in romance novels is so flawed in a relatable and almost mundane way.
This book's couple is my second favourite of this series, right after Joel/Katrina 👑❤️

That’s how I feel about Rebecca Jenshaks SMART JOCKS series - I’ve spent the last months wishing time away, counting down each new release, but now it’s finished and I feel so sad. What keeps me going is that I know great things are coming from Rebecca. She is an author I’ve watched grow from her very first book to now, and she never ceases to amaze me. This series is one of my all-time favourites, and Nathan & Chloes story was the perfect way to wrap it all up.

She's so much more than a girl I'm dating. I call her my princess, but I'm not the white knight. She is. She saved me.
I'm sad to say that I didn't love this one as much as the previous books in the series. The Smart Jocks novels have played such a huge part in renewing my interest in contemporary NA novels, so they will always hold a special place on my shelves. The beginning of this novel just felt a little too forced and I didn't feel the connection between Nathan and Chloe beyond their forced interactions. Chloe just kept mentioning how their relationship was fake and didn't mean anything, which really started to grate on my nerves.
But things really came together for me during the second half, and I found myself more immersed in their story and HEA. I have to say though that my favorite part was seeing all of the other couples from the previous novels (especially Zeke and Gabby!) and getting to see them all happy and moving forward. Overall, it was a novel worth reading and I can't wait to see who the next novel will be about... maybe Heath or Shaw!?

Damn did I love these two. I think they may rival Zeke and Gabby for top couple in this series....yes, they were that good. We already know Nathan, but in this book we get to meet Chloe. She’s a volleyball transfer, that has teammates that are pretty nasty to her. Don’t worry, it’s all explained in the book, is it a good reason...not in my opinion, but I did understand. Anyway, these two are down on their luck and just kind of find each other. They have a hot night together and then, because he’s a big basketball star at their college....her teammates are nice-ish to her, and he becomes her fake boyfriend. Let me be clear, these two have a shit ton of chemistry together, like off the charts, they definitely belong together, but Chloe is a bit harder to convince.
This was a safe read, with a great storyline. Two people that need each other, find each other at the best possible time. They are relationship goals all the way. And their chemistry *fans self*. We get to see all of our favorites and it just puts me in my happy place. Nathan is about the sweetest guy, I adored him, being strong for his family and taking on the weight of the world. And Chloe...pretty much the same, but in a much different way. I love and adore this group of friends, watched/read them all turn into grownups and become amazing people. And they did it together, they are all so close. Absolutely love this series....so much. We get a kick ass epilogue and an hea. This group has my heart for sure...all the book crack series love.

I am a huge and I love this series so much and I have been waiting for Nathan's story! It was sweet, cute and sexy. This series is a must read for sports romance fans!
I loved Nathan and Chloe. In the previous books, you knew something was going on with Nathan and in this book all is revealed. Chloe supported him and he supported her. Nathan and Chloe may have started off as a fake relationship, but in the end there was nothing fake about it or their genuine feelings for each other. Their attraction and undeniable chemistry was fiery. They both had their own personal struggles but together they were stronger.
The Fake is a great college romance filled with sweet, sexy and romantic moments. And with a hero and heroine that you can’t help but root for. All in all it was such an enjoyable read and I am sad this series is over. I’m so looking forward to what comes next from Rebecca Jenshak.

If I have learned anything from reading this series, it is that I am helpless against the charms (such as they may be) of a Smart Jock.
Nathan. Siiiiiigh. This guy. He wasn't what I was expecting. I mean, having read the other books in this series, I felt like I was already primed to love him. But I had no idea how easy it was going to be to love him. He was so much more than I anticipated. He was loyal, steadfast, earnest and true.
So. Wonderful.
I mean, and also wounded. And imperfect. And sometimes I felt a little like I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. But Lord Almighty, I adored him.
And Chloe? She was perfect for him. Perfect for me as a reader. She was strong and steadfast in her own right. I loved - no, I adored how these two communicated. How there was no lingering drama. In fact, for a NA book, The Fake is pretty low angst and I loved it for that. I loved how they cared for each other, I loved how they flirted and bantered and fell so easily in love. And I loved how they talked each other through the difficult patches so that even when that other shoe dropped, it didn't hurt quite as badly as I was afraid it was going to.
There's just so much goodness here. The friendships (both the bromances and the sisterhood) are so rewarding. And Ms. Jenshak wrapped up this series beautifully. I'm so happy for the time I got to spend with all these amazing couples. My heart is so happy and I am already in line for whatever Rebecca Jenshak wants to dole out next. This is good stuff, y'all. 3 Nate and Chloe Stars
This was an ok read. College sports romance with a gorgeous , popular , successful basketball player and a pretty , talented volleyball player. Nathan has been through a big life event previously and that has left him juggling college and trying to support his family back at home (Mum and brother) . Chloe has transferred (not by choice) from another College and the reputation of being a spoilt , rich kid (she's actually lovely and not a spoilt brat at all) has coloured how her new teammates see her.
This starts off as a fake relationship but these two actually connected from the very beginning. Good secondary characters and a little bit angsty in places - nothing too intense.
I think maybe I need to step away from College romances for a bit (I've read a few lately) so perhaps I would have rated higher if I hadn't overdone the genre. That's on me. The writing is good and I liked the solid character development.
HEA? Yes. There is a scene where Nate tells Chloe he loves her and that was beautiful to read.

A sweet conclusion to Smart Jocks series! Nate was a mystery from the beginning and I loved learning more about the guy we've met so far. He's keeping some heavy secrets and carries serious weight on his shoulders but he finds his match in Chloe. These two will make your heat ache, but they'll also make you swoon. I can see what next Jenshak has in store for us!

Giving away my stars because I love Rebecca Jenshak and I have been waiting for this book on Nathan since reading The Assist. I can't wait to get it in my hands.
Now let's get to the real review after having read my ARC!
"The End." Two words have never made me more sad about a series ending. I've loved going on this journey of meeting these Smart Jocks and watching them fall in love. It's bittersweet to say goodbye but it was done perfectly!
Nathan, oh my boy Nathan. He's always been a complex character, even when you saw him in the earlier three books. I was uber curious about him and finally I got some answers.
He's not perfect, he's the least smart jock around but even through his stupid descions you see his heart. You see how he's only ever looking out for others.
When his eyes land on Chloe, a transfer student trying to continue her senior year at Valley U, after a scandal at her last college. He sees something more to her. Not just his suffer princess, but the loneliness and embodiment of not fitting in.
A small conversation turns into a whole night, and then well you know Nathan can't resist a girl as real and gorgeous as Chloe, so of course things lead to a little roll in the sheets.
What starts pretty quick, ends just as fast but when they both realize they can help each other out with their problems of money and fitting in, Nathan can't say no. Especially when it means he gets to spend more time with her.
It's so adorable. The Fake is one of my favourites from the series (and yes I know I've probably said that about every book but they're all just amazing!)
The small notes, the texts, the meet-cute story they make up, the connection, the trip, the forgiveness and so much more are reasons why I love this story. Nathan and Chloe have fit a place in my heart. And it helps that they fit so well with the expanding gang of Nathan's friends.
I could go on and on, but truly the heart and story telling of giving second chances and not judging someone so quick is beautiful. I feel sad to say goodbye to Nathan and all my Valley U friends but to know they're living on in their happily ever after's is enough, also that basketball scene at the end *chefs kiss* ended in perfection!

"The End." Two words have never made me more sad about a series ending. I've loved going on this journey of meeting these Smart Jocks and watching them fall in love. It's bittersweet to say goodbye but it was done perfectly!
Nathan, oh my boy Nathan. He's always been a complex character, even when you saw him in the earlier three books. I was uber curious about him and finally I got some answers.
He's not perfect, he's the least smart jock around but even through his stupid descions you see his heart. You see how he's only ever looking out for others.
When his eyes land on Chloe, a transfer student trying to continue her senior year at Valley U, after a scandal at her last college. He sees something more to her. Not just his suffer princess, but the loneliness and embodiment of not fitting in.
A small conversation turns into a whole night, and then well you know Nathan can't resist a girl as real and gorgeous as Chloe, so of course things lead to a little roll in the sheets.

I had so much fun writing this series and especially this book. Nathan has a special place in my heart. Hope you guys enjoy it too! <3

3.5 stars. This book was pretty good, but unfortunately not as good as the others in this series.
The hero, Nathan, has had a lot of page time in previous books. He's also a basketball player living in the same house as all the other heroes. He meets the heroine, Chloe, on one of the worst days for both of them, and they end up getting drunk and having sex. Chloe's roommates catch them together the next morning and she covers up her actions by pretending that he's her boyfriend. Then they start in on a fake relationship and eventually realize they want it to be real. They eventually get a sweet HEA.
Like I said, this book wasn't as good as the others in this series, at least for me. I didn't feel the connection between Chloe & Nathan in the same way that I felt it with the previous guys. Something about Nathan constantly feeling not good enough made me believe him. He was acting rather desperate for a GF in the previous book, and it almost made me feel like he would have liked Chloe no matter who she ended up actually being. His negative self talk and desperation, coupled with the fact that he was the first person on campus who was nice to Chloe, made me less than thrilled about their relationship. Still, there were several funny and sweet parts to this story, which is why it ultimately still earned a good rating from me.
Safe; No OM/OW drama. No Cheating. Depression in side character.
