In Deep Shift: Riding the Waves of Change to Find Peace, Fulfillment, and Freedom

Rate this book
An empowering guide to help you navigate those times when your life turns upside down and inside out—and the radical shift in consciousness you can access in the process

There’s nothing safe or comfortable about having your life overturned. Whether the upheaval comes in the form of a world-shaking event or something as intimate as a broken relationship, medical emergency, or personal loss—the result leaves us feeling profoundly disturbed and unsure of what to do next. Yet what if such moments of crisis were actually gateways to expanding our consciousness and finding more freedom than we ever thought possible? At these times, we enter what Valerie Gangas calls “deep shift.”

For Valerie, her own deep shift came after she lost her mother. In her struggles with depression and despair, she became fascinated by what comes next when our lives are upended. “There’s no ‘back to normal,’” she says. “Deep shifting is a process that means letting go of the person you thought you were. These times compel us to turn to what we’re all here to do—wake up, transform, and come home to our true selves.”

In Deep Shift walks you through the journey from the moment “shift really hits the fan” to your return to the world as a changed human. Here, Valerie offers research-driven insights, relatable stories, and practices and journal exercises to help reframe the hard times, embrace change as a gateway to awakening—and ultimately learn to become a “natural shifter” who can flow gracefully with whatever life throws at you.

Valerie shares the profound, often hidden benefits of being “in deep shift,”

• Freedom from troubling distractions and anxiety about the future
• Knowing it’s okay to just be you
• Resting in deep acceptance of what is instead of fixating on what you may have wanted
• Enhanced mental clarity and creativity
• Feeling more emotionally grounded and balanced

In Deep Shift is an empowering guide, offering reassurance and support during times of major life change—to help you remember that even in the hardest times, your sense of hope, purpose, and joy is always within reach.

Sounds True works with some of my favorite teachers and authors. I requested this book based on that earned trust and was not disappointed. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of In Deep Shift.

I am a bit stumped as to how to review this book. It was not written for me. There is a list of shifter attributes which I read to a friend and we both laughed in recognition of how little I resembled the descriptions. And yet when we were done my friend exclaimed, "But wait! I answered yes to every question." I find myself immensely grateful to the author for writing the book because it gave me a glimpse into the lives of those I love who do identify as shifters. But I felt like I was eavesdropping a lot of the time, listening in on a conversation that wasn't for me but which I still got so much out of.

First, by describing shifters so vibrantly I was able to see clearly that I am not one. And that led me to examine my own journey. What a gift! This internal discussion alone was worth the time and energy I invested in reading the book. Second, by providing such a clear vision of deep shift and concrete steps to support the process, I feel much more prepared to help those around me who are experiencing transformation in ways so very different from my own experience. Third, much of the information and advice is generally applicable whether the reader finds themselves in the midst of change or not.

Personally, I did not respond positively to the conversational tone of the book and deducted a star for the authorial voice while at the same time acknowledging this same voice might be what makes the book accessible to another reader. Fortunately there are books for all of us out there.

In Deep Shift is a personal look at radical transformation, offering support and advice for those who find themselves in the same situation. I appreciate and agree with most of the information. Many of my favorite resources were suggested, it is obvious the author and I swim in the same sea. I also greatly appreciate the author's acknowledgment that sometimes professional help is warranted. This is an easy to read to book I would recommend to anyone who finds themselves in an intense season of personal growth, or if you want to support someone in such a season.

Gangas provides a jaunty, joyful roadmap through the dark night of the soul. She calls it deep shift. I found myself nodding in agreement as I read. Her experiences are eerily similar to mine and deep. She candidly shares her bumps and bruises, revealing the tender underbelly of an authentic life. A great primer on spiritual awakening.

The first half of this book was ringing bells for me and I don't think anything can describe the phase of life I am currently in better than this and that brought me some peace. Some of the middle parts were just science for health and at first I was like duh, but I can see how this could benefit others who maybe haven't connected things together as much. It was really motivating and even though I don't identify with traditional religion I think the spiritual aspect was totally open to individual interpretation which was much appreciated. The goal is to connect and live authentically and break free of everything places ONTO us. To feel it all. This book is helping me churn through some things inside myself. A straightforward (but not harsh) handbook to getting through that deep shit/ shift in life.

Listen to this audiobook! The author's voice is the perfect way to follow her personal, hip writing style. Whatever may be changing in your life, Valerie will help you through it. I especially appreciated her 'maintenance' ideas at the end. A good one!

On page 5 she talks about her mother taking her to see Mother Teresa and that her mother told her Mother Teresa “single-handedly changed the world”. I couldn’t read another word. Any author who idolizes someone who reveled in torturing people is not someone whose opinions are valid, in my opinion.
