You don't play Salts for fun.
You play to bleed.

Emerson Duncan
My sister, my rival, my coach, and my pair…
None of them want me to win.

But I was born from nothing and I’ve clawed my way to the top. I’m not backing down, even if I have to break bones and spill blood in the snow to stay the first round pick for the Royal Salts League.

Electra St. Clair
Emerson Duncan is unhinged, but I love watching him squirm.
Victor Fell is quiet and cunning and, I find outthe night he turns my world upside down, sexy as hell.
But… who am I?
What do I want?

To play for the RSL?
Write for the paper?
Escape my stepbrother?
Fall in love with my coach?

Maybe I’m not that good, though.
Maybe I don’t deserve any of those things.
Maybe I’m as bad as Em, and all I really want is to watch the snow turn red.

*Verglas is a full-length novel. It can be read as a stand-alone, but this is not exactly a romance.*

I’m such a skank for K.V. Rose books. I really am.
I love the toxicity. I love the lack of morals her characters have. The hunger. All the inner dialogue. Her writing is so unique and I’m obsessed.

This book surrounds college kids and a coach who all play a fictional sport called Salts. Think of Where’s Waldo only it’s Where’s the damn Finish Line and you’re in a forest of hundreds and hundreds of acres. You AND your partner need to cross the hidden finish line together to win. Players play dirty to win. To survive.
The deadliest college sport. Banned in five states.

Electra and Emerson are eachothers dirty little secret. Step siblings and fuck buddies. Emerson’s life is Salts. It’s his way out of being poor and feeling like he’s no one. He doesn’t want to be known as messing with his sister… but secrets get messy and some team players know…

Electra loves and hates Emerson. She’s always loathed him. Hates being second to everything and everyone in Emerson’s life.
And coach Fell. Victor Fell. My god. 🔥🔥💦 This man.
(He’s 26 to Electra being 20)
This man. His urges. The sexual tension. His need for consent and control. His feelings for Electra. 🐶

It’s a lust triangle.
You feel for them all. Bad decisions and all.

“I will give my stepsister anything she wants, how wicked our love is, but how generous to. I will give her anything when I finish this year being crowned into the League.” - Emerson.

“ It’s like I can feel Victors eyes on me too.”
“ It’s like he’s a guardian angel with blood on his hands and who am I to question the gods? “

Players dying. A killer within the team? Secrets in the past.
Everyone has dirty little secrets…

Dnf at 30%

Coming from someone that NEVER dnfs a book.

First of all this was so wordy and hard to read.
Second the changing timelines.
Third the way this book gave me an information dump at the very start of it.
Victor calling her "puppy".
I HATE confusing plot lines.
For this 30% i know nothing about the actual plot of the book.
Anyone was fucking anyone in this book for real with no context too.
The multiple pov bothers me when that character is not that important.
Also as a reader who's reading about a made up game,
I want the game explained so i KNOW what I'm reading about.
When the game is not explained and the book is talking about the game left and right it's a big ????????

I just liked the scene where he stepped on her face when he was fucking her from behind.
But not even the smut could save this.

KV Rose does no wrong. Verglas is different than her typical work, but it’s not any less amazing!

Dark, twisted, sexy, toxic and with a new gritty sport thrown in. This whole book made me feel like I was watching a wicked new tv series. You follow a-lot of different people in this one. It’s full of tension, drama and it comes with a dash of murderous intent.

Emerson Duncan is not a nice boy, but I love him nonetheless. I want more scenes between him and Electra. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be rooting for Victor or Em in this one but Emerson took the cake and I don’t care if I’m wrong 😂

I’m here for this new series and I can’t wait to see where this world goes in The Fells!

BOOK REVIEW

Verglas by KV Rose

READ THIS IF YOU LIKE: romantic suspense | love triangles | step siblings | multiple povs | ”good girl” | Salts | multiple timelines | ”puppy” | rabbits

“[He] is a shell of darkness with only a sliver of morality. But he forgot, somewhere underneath him, I lost all of mine.”

FOLKS KV HAS DONE IT AGAIN! This one is the most perfect romantic suspense, keeping you on your toes and making sure you ask yourself what is going on at least 20 times in the first half of the book. You’ll want to check your morals at the door and trust no one, including yourself. The amount of times that I thought I had it figured out to then have the rug pulled out from beneath me. Laying on my back in the snow. You feel like you’re right on the Salts field, along with the other players, just trying to find the finish line.

Are you wondering—Jor, what is this Salts, you speak of?—well it’s a game, not for the weak-minded, you will be tested both on and off the field. And players are willing to do anything (and I mean anything) to win…so be careful.

Weeellll I was pleasantly surprised by this book. This was originally for the people who signed up for her newsletter. I’ve become obsessed with it!!! It is unlike any other dark twisted romance. This was my first K.V. Rose book and I want to jump into her others now!

5★
4🌶️
Dark Sports romance (made up sport)
Forbidden Love
Step-siblings
Coach + Player
Toxic love triangle
Multiple POV
Mystery/Suspense

You mainly follow Electra, Emerson, and Victor. Though you get different POV of the other players of the Razer Rabbits University Salt players. This made up game is wild. Kind of reminds me of the brutality of rugby but you’re in a race to the finish line. The three MC’s are toxic for eachother but you love them. I think that’s what I loved how K.V. Rose somehow made one these messed up characters and made them lovable! If you read this and you are like HANNAH WTF EM IS AWFUL! He put her Reese’s in the fridge and said Happy Birthday, THAT’S LOVE. Leave me alone. Hahahahaha. All the players have demons they are dealing with and I’m looking forward to what it’s in store for the next book. Ooof Victor, the coach… is everything!

Yes, the timeline can be confusing at first. Make sure you look at the months. It's just a different way of doing a flashback. I didn't find it difficult. If I can follow along, I'm sure you can do it.

I cannot wait for the next book, but I will wait. Again, if you signed up for the newsletter you will see it sending out parts of the next book. I’m going to wait though!

What an amazing dark twisted ride!

KV weaves her unique spin on a dark, toxic , angsty sports romance in Verglas.

There's secrets , plotting, revenge, murder , suspense and steam! It read like a thriller and I loved it.

This is a "love" triangle and I loved both guys which never happens to me. All of the characters in this book are bad in some way but they are also redeemable.. I think? 🤔😬

When going into a KV book I know I will not get a feel good fluffy romance with a happy ending. If that's what you need this one may not be for you. This book is dark , it's dangerous , cold and calculating but sooo good.

If you are a fan of KVs previously books you will love this one. I can't wait to read more about these characters in The Fells.

Tropes are:
☆Dark romance
☆Sports romance
☆Love triangle
☆Forbidden/taboo romance
☆Step brother
☆Coach / athlete
☆Spicy
☆Mystery/thriller vibes

***

Yo, the suspense in this one. Verglas had everything I love combined in one helluva unforgettable story. Stepsiblings are one of my favourite tropes and no one writes them quite like KV Rose.

In the most torturing way.
In the most murderous way.
In the most scarring way.

Emerson and Electra both own me. I was drinking up their animosity like if it was the sweetest aphrodisiacs. Like even if knowing it was the most deadly poison, I'd still let it kill me. Call me biased but they are unofficially my favourite stepsiblings duo.

Oh, Victor. I highlighted almost everything that left this man's mouth AND everything that stayed inside his wonderful mind. King of my heart. There is no one like you. (I am not going to talk about him and Lectra. I'll just gatekeep their precious moments.)

Can a book still be KV Rose but also an alien from another planet?

One of the MANY reasons why Verglas is brilliant- BRILLIANT in its nature is the unusual timeline. Some people might find it weird or confusing or simply it not being their cup of tea. Me? I LOVED IT. It kept my Brain spinning. My fight or flight response on high alert. It took me on an adrenaline infused ride that cost me countless hours of sleep.

One of the MANY reasons is also the multiple POVs that the author excells at.
One of the MANY reasons are the side characters who feel like main characters.
One of the MANY reasons is the dangerous made up sports that is Salts.
One of the MANY reasons are the stunning visuals of a twisted version of Winterland.
One of the MANY reasons is the sex. lol

The way I was utterly consumed by this fictional world to the point that I couldn't stop thinking about it months AFTER, cannot be compared to anything that I've read before.

Better than a romantic movie.
Better than a crime TV show.
Better than porn.*

I read some fantastic books last year, but suddenly it was like I read only one book that year and that one book was Verglas.

Five addictive stars for the Newsletter version.
Five PLUS stars for the book version.

“Verglas” is an incredibly different story than KV’s usual works, despite it still having her trademark darkness. The love triangle between Electra, Emerson, and Victor still has me so conflicted because I have no clue who I think Electra should end up with. There is still so much to uncover about all of these characters, and I know “The Fells” will be a wild ride. Speaking of, I am so intrigued by Victor’s siblings, especially Fostin. Each of the other side characters as well, such as Bentley, Kara, Arley, and Bless, were so intriguing with their own backstories, and I hope we get to learn more about them.

While I had a slow start with this book, once I got into it, I quickly devoured it (well, as quickly as one can while studying abroad for a semester). I was hooked, as I always am with KV’s books. While this was so different, it was also so refreshing and I applaud KV for writing more of what she wants and what is calling to her. I am in love with this new world she has created🖤

Thank you so much to KV for gifting me this book!

This is the only worst book I've ever read; I feel like I should get a reward or something for finishing it! I wish I could give it zero stars. I am pretty sure even the author forgot what the plot line was, this isn't a romance of any trope, it isn't even a sports novel, its just colossal mess ,there is no point to the story,i didn't want to finish it at 35% itself but I kept reading hoping it would get better, I gave the author benifit of the doubt and kept trusting the process that it might get better in the end, but it never did & I think it ended on a cliffhanger because the author mentioned it otherwise you wouldn't even know that there was a cliffhanger (not that the ending was good!)

So if you want to read this book here's my suggestion- DON'T! JUST DON'T!!

As crazy as this book is, I loved it!
First I have to say that this is not your typical romance book. I can't say it's a dark romance either. Yes, it's dark and there's romance in it, but it's not a romance book imho. I would say this is categorized as erotic suspense.

This book follows a step-sibling, Emerson and Electra who are athletes of a fictional surviving sport called Salts. Basically a Hunger Games situation but played out on a treacherous snowy mountain without the killing part (or is it?) 🤔

Emerson and Electra had a toxic fuck buddy relationship ever since they were in high school after their parents got married. Emerson is very possessive of Electra however he doesn't show it in public due to the taboo image which may reflect on his professional career as a Salts player. Electra doesn't want to be a hidden second choice anymore and here comes Victor, their Salts coach (who apparently has a puppy kink) 🫢 A stoic coach who has a mysterious past with peculiar siblings.

Rivalry, jealousy, anger, dark pasts, and secrets all mix together. Dangerous people play dangerous games, villain against villain, nothing could go wrong, right? Yeah, if only.

Nothing good ever came between the relationship of all the characters in this book, yet I love the plot and the tension a lot! It has back and forth timeline, that's why you should pay attention to the chapter titles. It's a bit confusing but I like it because it keeps the mystery going.

I shouldn't root for any of them, but as deprived as I am, Emerson Duncan wormed into me 🥺 Oh, and there's no HEA (well, if you wanna call the ending a happy end, it's up to you).

Check this if you wanna read:
❄️ Stepbrother trope
❄️ Coach x athlete
❄️ Love triangle
❄️ Fictional survival sport
❄️ Puppy kink

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This is a dark romantic suspense. It’s dirty and messy and nearly every character in here is horrible in some way.
There is secrets, betrayals, revenge and murder all wrap up in a dark sports romance. The story centers around a group of college kids and their coach who all play a fictional sport called Salts - hiking through a forest at night in search of a finishing line no one know ahead of time with your partner and to survive be all means necessary.
The timeline is a bit confusing but the suspense of the story and the mystery of Emerson and Victor left me wanting more.

TW/tropes

Sports romance, step siblings, love triangle, forbidden, coach/athlete, college, degradation, voyeurism, “puppy”

ugh. I love K.V. Rose. She is probably one of my favorite authors that‘s why I was so excited to read this book when it finally came out on KU.
The unsainted series is one of my favs if not my fav series.
I love her writing and I love how she builds the characters and how she develops them.

But this book… I can‘t put my finger on one thing that annoyed me. I still liked the writing and mostly the characters too, but I couldn‘t connect to them at all.
It felt so distant and I didn‘t like the storyline.
The jumps to past and present felt random and it just was a bit difficult for me to keep up with everything that happened, while not very much happened.

i loved some parts that were actually intriguing but the timeline fucked it up ugh.

kv rose what happened to writing story in chronological order??

i don’t mind past/present chapters but she went with that too far and added a third timeline… (FUTURE) and it was over for my brain.

now let’s talk about that “lust-triangle” i hate love triangle usually but i didn’t consider this one a “LOVE triangle” because let’s be real they were all horny for each other no love whatsoever. but if i may say i HAVE a favorite it’s definitely the one with a puppy kink rather than loser stepbrother 😔 #imjustagirl

Okay, so this book was pretty confusing at the beginning with the different timelines - I kept having to go back to the chapter titles to re-check what month it was, past or present. Despite that, I was sucked into the story. Very unique. It definitely kept me on my toes with the mystery/suspense and Emerson and Victor, and Victor’s family. I struggled to connect with Electra at times; none of the characters are truly likeable tbh. Victor is the one I find the most intriguing. I’m dying to read more books in this series and I actually think this is my first favorite read of 2023!

'Emerson Duncan is a shell of darkness with only a sliver of morality. But he forgot, somewhere underneath him, I lost all of mine".

VERGLAS is KV Rose's newest book - it's different to what she's written before, but it's no less dark and depraved. The character's relationships are toxic, the book's setting is creepy (it gives me full-on chills), and I always end up falling for the cruel and twisted anti-hero. Her words, though, are so addictive and intense that I can't help but become totally hooked. Because of this, she will forever be one of my favourites.

This book was like crack to me. I couldn’t get enough of this world, the characters, the weirdness and the twisted relationships. I inhaled it like my life depended on it.

The toxicity oozes out of the pages. These are not characters with high morals. These are characters who are prepared to do what they need to do to win. Even if it ends in blood.

This was so unique to anything else I have ever read. The story of a dangerous sport called Salts and the competitors who play it. Sounds strange but it’s so good.
The atmosphere was next level and completely transported me. The snow, the forest, the cold. All of it.

The timeline is a bit different but in my opinion this is part of the reason why this book is so interesting and unique. It feels a bit like a murder mystery that you’re shown flashbacks off as they try to solve the case. I have seen some reviews mention this is confusing but I didn’t find it confusing at all. I ate it up.

We have here:
- Step brother/ step sister romance.
- Love triangle.
- Blood play.
- Toxic, morally grey characters.

Coach Victor Fell. Sigh. That is all.

I am obsessed with everything in the twisted world of the Razer Rabbits.

I’m positive that KV could write anything and I would love it. Verglas is slightly different than her typical books but still holds the essence of her writing that I know and love.

It started out as fun snippets in her newsletter and has turned into another full length fictional world I’m obsessed with, this time with a fictional sport called Salts. It follows many different characters, giving us snippets of several of their perspectives and none of them are good guys. Emerson’s perspective might be my favorite perspective in this story.

K.V has a way of writing dark, twisted worlds that I want to be a part of. She also finds a way, even if it’s small, to connect each book to others. This one has a mention of Unsainted characters with a carnival setting that gives off major unsainted vibes.

Each character has an intrigue about them, a mysterious nature where you can’t help but want to know more. The timeline jumps around a bit which can be confusing for some but I felt that KV handled this well.

I don’t want to give anything away (I say it every book of hers), it just needs to be experienced. I honestly feel like she’s just an incredible writer and has perfected writing dark, twisted “romances.”
