Better Than Best Friends

Rate this book
*** Don't worry, this isn't a comic book. But it is very graphic. ***

It's a tale as old as cellphones. A joke goes too far and everything changes for two lifelong best friends. A dare leads to a wild night and lasting consequences when they keep coming back for more and feelings happen.

Jasper's known Grey for as long and as well as he knows himself. They grew up next door to each other and have been best friends their entire lives. Along with Grey's brother, Zach, the three have shared every adventure and weathered every storm together. Including Grey's messy track record with women and Jasper's coming out. Their friendship and their lives change forever when a bluff goes too far and leads to a night of unexpected passion.

UPDATE: The Jock's Trap cover in Amazon is appealing, attractive (to me) and completely different , thanks f#ck 🙊🙈than the porny graphic novel cover in Goodreads.

Hilarious. Hot. Heart-Touching.

I had a wonderful time reading this friends to lovers, MM romance story with it's swooning HEA and sweet and laughing out loud epilogue.

J . and Gray are fun, likeable and charming heroes. Their journey from best friends to lovers was written a way it felt natural credible and organic. Also, their tale is really, and I mean, really steamy, borderline lava 🌋 levels hot 🔥LOL, and in need of cold showers. 🙈🙉🙊😁

The Jock's Trap is 2nd. book I read by this author ; 1st. was Ellis Harper's Shot In The Dark and both are phenomenal reads that gave me All. The. Feels. I highly recommend them both.

*** The book has been renamed as Better Than Best Friends on Amazon and the cover has been updated ***

New cover:
description

The new cover is way cuter and is what initially attracted me to this book (the cover on Goodreads is funny tho ahahah). Although maybe the first cover was more accurate because this book was smut with a side of romance 😅. I kinda skimmed some scenes because there so many. If you're looking for smutty time, something fun and easy, bi-awakening + friends to lovers this is your book !

Well, this was porn.

Only about the first two scenes were good. There was just so much.

I hated Grey. The child’s softball league was such a bad choice for a subplot…talk about awkward transitions.

Grey was real homophobic.

Blah. So much skimming near the end.

The cover, Grey and the sex made those 3⭐. The story? About 2.75⭐ - just about.
If the writing were a bit different than it was and if the author gave a little more relationship development to the story, this book would've definitely get a higher rating from me.

I really really like this cover though, definitely a better choice than the new cover and most faithful to the story, because the jockstrap is almost the third main character.

🟣 Best friends to lovers
🟢 Gay/straight - GFY
🟡 DL, coming out
🔵 A dare
🌶️ A lot of smut, great sex; both vers

Even though this story had less than 100 pages, it was pretty hard to get through. The relationship between J. and Grey was so damn complicated and they couldn't find the middle ground. When there was finally a breakthrough and a possibility of them getting their happy ending, there were again 10 different complications around the corner.

The storytelling made this story seem like not a love story. It wasn't a love story, it had no such depth. There was no romantic connection between the main characters or a platonic one, even though they were childhood best friends and attached at the hip, I couldn't feel it.

The story is basically of a dare between J. and Grey, childhood best friends, where Grey ends up alone after a failed hook-up on a weekend and he's asking J. to have sex with him every single time for the past 15 years. J. is openly gay and he always turns Grey down, until one day he doesn't. They have an amazing night and the tension was there, it was promising, I was really excited about what will come of it.

A lot lot lot of sex. That's what came out of it.

"Grey's jaw twinged and his mouth watered as his fingers swirled and smeared the cum all over the jock as J. moaned and babbled incoherently on the bed. Grey couldn't wait any longer. He pulled out and J. gasped in shock as Grey lowered and buried his face in the jock. He sucked and licked as his face rolled and rubbed against the coarse, wet fabric. His hand gripped his cock and he didn't even care that the condom was still stretched around his shaft as he pumped. He was desperate and euphoric as he inhaled J.'s essence. Pressure and bright, electric heat exploded in his groin as his body tightened and he screamed J.'s name as he came. "

There's a lot of smut here - and the sex is fantastic. It's damn fantastic. J. and Grey are fire in the bedroom and the sex scenes were hot and descriptive. They couldn't keep their hands off of each other. If for nothing else, I'd recommend this book for the sex alone.

"What could be better than realizing your best friend was your sexual soulmate? It was perfect, as far as Grey was concerned. He was spending more time with his favourite person in the world, having the best sex in the world. And Grey felt like he was getting back something he'd been missing. He'd just been too caught up with life to know he'd been missing it."

The problem is it never goes deeper than that, it's just sex, even though they keep saying they're falling in love or saying they love each other, but it's not believable.

As I said, the beginning sounded very, very promising. But Grey's character was portrayed as a complete fuck-up of a straight guy, even though this guy had a job at the school dealing with kids with special needs, he was a coach, he had his own place, he was a really good person, the only thing he did wrong was he hooked up a lot and had crazy women following him everywhere. He never had serious relationships and it looked liked everyone close to him just felt they were better than him.

J. and Grey were 34 years old and J. had a better relationship with Grey's brother and he wasn't letting Grey meet his boyfriends, they all thought Grey was an idiot and overall it felt like I was reading about two college guys.

For the most of the book we're made to believe how Grey's the one to screw up this potential relationship with J., because as they start hooking up regularly and Grey falls in love, he openly expresses his doubts and worries about suddenly coming out and being with a man, yet at the end of the day he was definitely willing to do a lot to keep J. by his side. Grey's character was done dirty here, which didn't sit right with me. Grey literally had noone to talk to about what this new aspect of his sexuality meant for him and his brother and best friend both shut him out.

"Boyfriend. He might be able to cop to having one but he was uncomfortable with being the kind of guy who had one. J. was right. Grey didn't want to deal with the social consequences of being openly gay or bisexual. People's perception of him might change and he might lose some of the respect and advantages he enjoyed as a straight man."

All of that is valid, Grey wanted to stay on the DL and J. opposed, because he was out and felt offended when someone wanted to put him back in that closet - that's fair.

But then

"As much as Jasper believed in living openly and not hiding, he wasn't ready to face what it ultimately meant to be a gay man. He didn't know if he'd ever be brave enough to take that final leap and live as a gay man in a relationship with another man."

"Jasper let people believe it was Grey who was holding him back so he didn't have to deal with the discomfort he felt when he was with another man in public and around people he knew. Part of him didn't want Grey to come clean. Ever. Jasper couldn't keep stalling if Grey came out."

So that definitely left a bitter taste, I felt weird about J. and Grey's love story and I stopped believing they actually even have serious potential, I questioned their feelings for each other, because it seemed from the very beginning that J. wasn't really that into it, J. wanted that fantastic sex, but not the whole person, even though it was supposedly Gray who was afraid of it all.

J. and Grey go back and forth all the time, it's exhausting and the way the story is told I wasn't really rooting for them. J.'s emotions are not told, you keep wondering does he even feel anything for Grey other than friendship? Because he meets a guy and starts telling Grey how unbelievably hot that guy is, he gives that guy his number and is way too damn excited about it, but this was the highlight of the stupidity that was J.;

"You never took this seriously," he said and J. threw his hands up.
"I didn't until you made me!" He yelled. "Everything's messed up now, Greyson. We were better than best friends and it made sense. Then, you made me want you. I never thought of you like that until you made me. It wasn't enough and you wanted more. You made me need you and you made me think we had something real. Then, you ruined it."

Yeah, someone made a 34-year old man show up day after day after day after day and fuck his best friend and be fucked by him - and like it.

Grey's inner monologue about coming out and having a gay relationship is very realistic, the whole story is. I have a problem with the way it's told, it's not pleasant for a (sensitive) reader, because it doesn't go deeper and it should - it's dealing with important topics, but the main characters somehow lack that depth, their relationship doesn't evolve to a level it probably should have to be satisfactory for the story.

I couldn't help intensely disliking J. I also couldn't really feel the desire and love from J., he wasn't really a fan of Gray, to me he screamed 🚩🚩🚩 and even the epilogue didn't really convince me.

The sex was really hot, but Grey and Jasper's relationship just felt "off". They were both 33 and had had an emotional codependent friendship since college. Grey was straight and Jasper was gay. Grey was a user - of Jasper and also of his family. There wasn't enough relationship development and resolution. Grey never fully embraced his sexual identity and Jasper didn't tackle his intimacy issues. I wasn't convinced of their HEA even though the epilogue was 7 years later.

Kind of porny but I enjoyed it. Neither of the two MC were too likable (one of them pretty homophobic in a veiled way ) Loved the epilogue, though.

Hmmmm. As with many of the K. Sterling books I've read, this had pros and cons. There were a few typos but those weren't major this time. There were times it was a muddled mess with the odd dialogue formatting. There were times you weren't sure who was speaking - Jasper or Grey. Then, and can't believe I am saying this, there was WAY too much sex. Every time Grey and Jasper were alone, they were ripping off each other's clothes and engaging in some pretty hawt and dirty sex but it got to be a little tiresome. More story! Interestingly, the last 25-30% were key for me. I believed in Grey's and Jasper's relationship although both of them needed a kick in the ass, particularly Grey! This author can write some compelling dialogue and awesome interactions with MCs - "He was still red from being in the sun and he smelled like sunscreen and wind and there was a hint of clean sweat and soap. He was a thousand miles of bike races and a hundred games of tag and flag football. He was hours of scary stories by a campfire and rainy days in tent forts. He was everything Grey loves about his childhood and everything he wanted as a man. God, he wanted him so bad. Hunger and desperate need crashed into him as his eyes slide down Jasper's body." "Not gay just really open-minded when I'm drunk and horny." Now these guys grew up together - went to kindergarten together and are best friends still at 34 years old. The struggle between them, with Grey's reluctance to own his identity, gets worse as they try to maintain the friendship but have now added sex. "Now, you’ve pulled him into your massive vortex of Suck and you won’t stand by him. Sometimes, you can be a fucking child and a prick and I’ve never been more ashamed of you,” he said and Grey’s eyes burned as his lip trembled. He’d hurt the two people he cared about most and he thoroughly loathed himself. “I love him, Zach. I’ve always loved him and I think it was always more than friendship." Both have expectations but don't know how to deal with them. So the book ends with things a little unresolved but then we get a lovely epilogue 7 years down the road. So muddled, but I enjoyed it. "“I can’t wait for tomorrow, Grey said and his eyes started to water and there was a tickle in his throat as he realized how true that was. He couldn’t imagine being happier but he knew he would be even happier tomorrow and the tomorrow after that as long as he had J. by his side." I've said this before and will continue to point it out although I am probably whistling in the wind. Authors, particularly those who've released several books, need to edit. There is no reason I should be seeing hispanic instead of Hispanic in this day and age along with other silly mistakes. I know there are readers who have given up on this author because of the sloppy editing. I enjoy her writing and her MCs burrow themselves in my heart, but good heavens, authors owe readers their best work. Okay, rant over.

Well, I’m having difficulty trying to articulate my feelings about this book. The writing was decent, for the most part (there were several editing errors). I went back and forth on my feelings for Grey. He kept announcing through the ENTIRE book that he’s not gay like the word has cooties or something even though it’s just fine that his best friend is gay... WTH?

For some reason, it took me WAY too long to read this book. When it should have taken me 2 days MAX, it took me 5. It seemed like the story was just whipping along and then I noticed I was only at 48%. I was constantly waiting for the ‘event’, you know, the one that happens when the story seems to be nothing but sunshine and roses? Yeah, that one. It took longer than I thought to reach it and longer than it should have to resolve itself.

I really enjoyed this one, it was extremely HOT and super funny at times, but the characters actually grew on me a little.

What I didn't love, the transition between POV's wasn't really flawless, so a lot of times I was struggling to get my head that I was reading from another POV. And a little more plot development would have been better, the scenes more well constructed, a lot of them just ended abruptly.

But I did say I went into this ready for smut and something to relax with, and it certainly delivered.

Ok first of all this is NOT a novella. The description says it's 95 pages long which was my main reason for picking it as I needed a quick read. I know how long it takes me to read 100 pages and this was way longer than that! (and it did feel long!)

Then it was a mess. I should have stopped reading it but at first, I thought "it's so short I'll push through"

The dual 3rd person POV was so intertwined it was hard to get who was thinking/talking! Some things or transitions didn't make much sense either and made the flow even more confusing.

The whole story starts well, you think it's going to be "ok they tease each other, we learn that they've been crushing on each other for years and bam" Nope.
Instead, it goes like this:
Every time the straight guy gets dumped by his girlfriend he texts his BFF joking that he should give him a BJ. One day Jasper calls his bluff and says "ok let's do it!" So far so good...but he goes directly from the BJ joke to "Ok you wanted this so I'm going to f*ck you" and actually does it (with little prep) WTH?? (even though he keeps saying he never had any interest in his straight friend which sounds even worse)
Then they have sex (but with no intimacy) for months until a very awkward and weird ending.

I also hated that one of the MC was always called or written as "J." instead of Jasper. First it looks stupid (they're in their thirties not frat bros) but it's also annoying to read since it looks so much like "I"

The brother kept barging in their apartment without knocking was also annoying and felt like a 90s sitcom. Who does that? Just goes to people's houses and enters without knocking? And how stupid can he be to never realise they were clearly having sex?

And I really didn't get the secret aspect of it. Yes one of the MC is "straight" but nothing really justifies them keeping their thing a secret. You could understand Grey at first since he's figuring out his sexuality but it went on too long. And the constant "I'm not gay" was tiring. Yeah you're not gay and you're not straight and there are many other options in between. He sounded stupid with this all or nothing discussions. And Jasper was cold and annoying. I didn't root for any of them honestly.

What could be better than realizing your best friend was your sexual soulmate?
One of my favorite tropes - Friends to Lovers, while short, this one does a nice job of introducing the MC's before becoming absolutely filthy for a good portion of the book😅 You will receive zero complaints from me as each scene is scorching hot, unique, and dirty. Batman even makes an appearance as does a sexy jock strap and a Magic Mike dance.
“Fuck, that’s beautiful,” J. groaned and Grey’s eyes stretched across the room and caught on the dresser mirror. J. was behind him and his head was tilted as he watched Grey sliding back and forth on his cock. His body was taut and glistened with sweat as his hands hung at his sides. His fists were clenched as his abs quivered and bunched as he fought to stay still.
The family support the guys had was unbeatable and so sweet. I can't comment on their struggles as far as coming to terms with outing themselves as a couple because I have never been in that position. I don't know if Grey, who identifies as a straight man, would almost jeopardize a lifetime of friendship for his reasoning. Same for Jasper, who is a gay man, but still has reservations. Adorable HEA.

Grey was super annoying, he’s a nice guy but I can’t with him in the first several chapters. Then at end of chapter 16 I think he was like “I don’t want people to think I’m gay” then next chapter plans a romantic date.

Sometimes extra periods after J, sometimes not. Cover art doesn’t match: Grey is supposed to be blonde and Jasper is brunette. How are these people still saying/thinking Grey is straight at 64%?!? I’m flabbergasted. Like 75% of the book is them getting it on in one way or another for weeks….

Less than 100 pages but taking me 4 days to read it, so that’s how not into it I am. I’m so glad Zach didn’t try and blame Jasper and he stood up to Grey and told him to man up.

The sex parts were steamy, but like everything else was a hot mess. Neither character felt genuine or like they kept the same personality and goals/beliefs. They kept turning on a dime and confusing the shit out of me. 1.5 out of 5 stars? The epilogue was really the only thing I enjoyed that didn’t have sex in it.

Greyson (Grey): 34, older brother Zach, elementary special ed teacher
Jasper (J.): 34, gay, dominant with sex, tops mostly with Grey, high school history teacher

DNF 34% The writing style is the main reason. As other people have mentioned, this is a dual pov and the person speaking isn't always clear. There are a lot of and/as in almost every sentence so it just feels stilted. I just picked a random section as an example.
"“You’ve said that three times now. What’s got into you?” He asked and Jasper chuckled as he slapped Zach’s knee. “Or, who did I get into?” He said and Grey swore under his breath and Zach rolled his eyes as he reclined and rested his foot on the dash. “If it’s someone I know, don’t tell me,” he said and Jasper winked as he sped up and hit another bump."
I don't understand why Jasper and Grey are friends. Grey is an asshole who doesn't respect boundaries. Then you have Jasper, he is always treating Grey like a nuisance. I don't think I read any positive feeling from Jasper twords Grey.

A real surprise

This was recommended to me and I loved it. Jasper and Grey were amazing together. I loved watching them sort things out. To get their hea. Zach was great as a BFF and brother and so supportive and it was obvious that there was so much love between their families. The scenes were so hot. This is one of those where the cover doesn’t really describe the book though there is a slight obsession with jock straps in the book. I enjoyed seeing Jasper and Grey cross the lone from being best friends to more and how they always had that special connection since they were babies and just couldn’t see what was right in front of them.

if this was shorter, i probably would’ve enjoyed it a lot more as a fun erotica, but it went on for quite long with no significant plot. both characters were kind of meh, especially grey for being all wishy-washy. also, the pov switches were really confusing sometimes as i couldn’t tell whose pov i was in during those chapters. the only hint i got was the name j. vs. jasper—literally. some parts were actually quite enjoyable towards the end when there were bits of angst and reflection, but as a whole, it was just okay.

No rating, because DNF at 50%.

This book has a much more innocent and sweet cover on Amanzon. Had I seen it with this Goodreads Cover I wouldn’t have lent it via KU.
And it would have been better for me not to have started reading.
In this GFU story they start f*cking as a result of the constant nagging from the straight part when he again is left from one of his many hookups. Once they start being intimate it's all one big f*ck fest with only tiny and not very interesting parts of story inbetween. Not very different from a porn. So no, not for me...

I really enjoyed the premise of this book and most of the plot... some of the editing stuff turned me way off the book but the scenes between Jasper and Grey were super hot and the Batman scene was perfect! They had a lot of sexual chemistry but man they were fucked up emotionally. It took way too much fuckery to get these boys to cooperate and figure their shit out. I did, however, mostly enjoy this one!!

Mhhh this was ok but A LOT of sex scenes. Too many sex scenes which left very little time for actual plot.
Grey one MC seemed a bit annoying at times. I feel like the idea behind the plot was decent but the execution just kind of made you cringe at the MCs.
It got a bit confusing towards the ending , everyone was sending mixed signals 🤷🏼‍♀️ but it’s a relatively short read and some of the dynamic between the MCs was fun.

Almost DNF. The author often isn't clear about who is talking or doing something and I found it annoying. Grey looked at J. and Zach and then he handed something to Grey. That kind if thing. Lots of heat though, they did a good job there. I'm hoping this is an early book and that's why there are writing issues. There potential but I'm not running out to get another book from this author any time soon.

Lawd the cover of this book was DIFFERENT on amazon. The GR’s cover looks straight sleezy pornographic which I suppose is kinda fitting since there was 70% smut & 30% story.

GFY stories have been my poison lately. This one was pretty 2 dimensional and quite short. The writing style wasn’t my favourite but it was readable for a shorter story.

I didn’t really feel much for either MMC but I felt like Grey deserved to have more support from Zach since that’s his freaking brother.

✅best friends to lovers

✅gay for you

➖it’s short, yes, but there was a lot of time spent with the MCs sleeping together and not a whole lot of emotional development, then all of a sudden they love each other and one’s declaration just fell flat, but both really don’t want to commit to each other and 2 pages later there is a grand gesture and the last page, they’re in a relationship 👎🏼

80% sex, 20% man-children fall in love and make babies

I can't exactly say this has a 3rd act miscommunication breakup. There's a 3rd act breakup, and their communication is pretty poor, but the breakup is mostly because they have the emotional maturity of 14 year olds.

It was hot though, I guess. I could have done with less cum-eating but that's just a personal preference. The BFY plot is always fun, loved that.

A great story

I really enjoy reading K. Sterling's books. They are always filled with real emotions and real life frustrations and challenges. There is always someone you can relate to. And it's also great when the characters find their way out of the storm to get their happy ending. Pun intended. Tee-hee-hee. Can't wait for her next wonderful tale.

From Best Friends to HEA

A first read for me by this author, but it won’t be my last. Loved Jasper and Greyson, best friends for life who became something more once Grey got his head out of his a** and surrendered to his feelings. This GFY story gave me the HEA I was longing for. I definitely recommend one-clicking this book!
