Full Metal Panic: Overload! is not so much a sequel to the first manga series as it is a retelling of the FMP mythos. Originally serialized in a magazine aimed at slightly younger readers, Overload! has the same basic story with a lot more comedy and a lot more explosions! Sosuke has finally lost his mind - and his memory! Rehashing his previous exploits will keep Kaname busy, but it doesn't take long for the military mind of this soldier to bounce back with a bang - literally! He's locked, loaded, and back to his old self by first period, as bombs and bullets grace the halls of high school!
Have to admit I lol'ed at the ridiculous premise and execution: an amnesiac child soldier who wants to protect a high school girl by all means possible regardless of extremity, with a romantic subtext. There were a couple unnecessary gratuitous panty shots.
I was hoping that obtaining the first volume would give me at least some better understanding of the later volumes (not that there wasn't much not to get). It didn't really, in fact, this series has repeat stories and senerios. Talk about an unexpected outcome, for me! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this volume and the series, it just wasn't as funny as I had hoped.
This series is pretty bizarre. It's obviously not part of the main story, and though it has some funny storylines, I got pretty tired of Kaname's whining by the end.
Every story basically has her go through the same routine with Sosuke, with no growth for either of them.
