Jack the Ripper?

Rate this book
Readers are transported to Victorian London and introduced to Inspector Doyle, a modern-day detective with eternal life, who discovers that he has been wrongly named as ‘Jack the Ripper’, the Victorian serial killer. Nobody wants that label at any time in history, so with the aid of time travel he returns to the year 1888 in an attempt to clear his name.

Another complication for Inspector Doyle is that his modern-day daughter, Flora, who he has left behind to travel back several centuries, is becoming increasingly suspicious of her father’s identity. This is after making her way into his Shrewsbury study, that she is forbidden to enter.

The only good thing about returning to 1888 is that Inspector Doyle is able to rekindle his relationship with daughter Alice and wife Eleanor, who he had to leave behind all those centuries ago. Alice can then only but marvel at her father’s abilities to answer a question that only he knows the answer to, because he has travelled into the future and back.

The story references many Victorian objects that have been meticulously researched and then used to tell a story that is only possible through time travel and a rather clever inventor who may or may not be still alive. Many elements of the original Jack the Ripper case are also detailed as are the horrors of Whitechapel.

Find out whether Inspector Doyle manages to clear his name by discovering who the real Jack the Ripper is, and expect a twist at the end that involves both daughters and a Victorian book that, unlike the rest of Inspector Doyle’s objects, is unable to exist in parallel between the two time zones.

What an intriguing and a new twist on the story of the Ripper.
Whitechapel in the East End of London England in 1888 was a very dangerous place to be especially if you are a woman.
After five murders the notorious killer named Jack The Ripper is yet to be caught but can a time travelling police Detective Inspector solve the case or at least clear his name?
Detective Inspector Doyle lives in the present day with his daughter Flora, and his wife but he has another life living in 1888 with his other wife Eleanor and daughter Alice.
When his daughter Flora starts to become suspicious of her father she starts to look into his past she wonders who her father really is.
Whilst in 1888 the heat is on to discover who the Ripper is before he strikes again he seeks out the help of fellow police Inspector Frederick George Abberline.
As the book unfolds it becomes very apparent to how much research has gone into writing this book.
The objects that are talked about throughout the book with amazing detail can be found at the end of the book along with references for books to research if the reader wishes to do so.
A very good twist at the ending is brilliantly written.

Flora, his daughter in 2019, starts finding odd things about him and figures out his secret. The story was great with details and mystery. It had a great ending.

Brilliant!

Praise for Jones! In this re-telling of the investigation into Britains most notorious serial killer ‘Jack The Ripper’ readers are taken on a literal trip back in time, where we learn things about Victorian England we may never have learned otherwise. Right down to what a vinaigrette is! Time travel has never appeared more appealing nor more spooky in this retelling. I couldn’t put this one down, it would make a great film or perhaps mini tv series. Really enjoyed the ending too.

It was meh. I was expecting more Jack the Ripper, but there were more weird Victorian things that were hard to understand, and a lot of rambling. I enjoyed the whole 'secret time traveler' thing, but it got confusing sometimes as to where we were in the story. The ending was nice, though🤷🏻‍♀️.

An intriguing time-travelling adventure

I feel this is an intriguing time-travelling detective adventure; which as well as being a work of fiction, offers so much more with its inclusion of actual antique Victorian objects to punctuate the story. The book includes theories surrounding Jack the Ripper, Ripper suspects and alleged victims as well as some interesting historical facts. It is clear that the subject matter has been well researched by the author: to fuse fact with fiction to create what is an engaging piece of work, and I think should appeal to readers interested in time travel, Victorian history, and indeed Ripperologists.

A work of fiction that uses time travel to send its protagonist back in time to Whitechapel, London in 1888. Well-researched and references the actual theories of Jack the Ripper, along with some fascinating antique objects during the telling of its story. Not just a history lesson and humorous crime adventure but a thought-provoking tale that makes you think about just how useful time travel could be if we ever, in reality, found a way to achieve it.
