The wealthiest people in the solar system abandoned the Earth for a private sanctuary in space, leaving the rest of us to die amidst cataclysmic climate change. But the 1% won't be safe for long... A murderer is on the loose, specifically targeting the super-rich. Soon Elise, an employee of the billionaire's space station, is wrapped up in a deadly investigation, with each issue featuring a new, diabolically different kill!
In the past week, I did both a workshop for another library and a booktalking program segment on graphic novels, so picked up quite a few newer ones to check out, so beware an influx of graphic novel reviews as I get to them.
Know Your Station imagines a pretty miserable Earth where soilsiders are left to their own devices. Meanwhile the wealthy elite, who of course helped create the awful Earth with everything from wealth exploitation, a corrupt carceral system, and environmental degradation, have escaped to a luxury space station where their every whim is catered to by an exploited staff.
When a murderer begins targeting the elite, it is up to an underqualified and drug-addicted security staffer named Elise, along with the AI St. Brigid, to figure out what is up. This one is much more satire than actual mystery, as Elise is a terrible investigator who doesn't do much actual investigating, and the actual culprit was easy to discover--though their motive surprised me.
I really wanted to like this. A murder on a space station with tongue-in-cheek social satire thrown in is right up my alley. But this story features my least favorite trope in the murder mystery genre: an unreliable, drug or alcohol abusing narrator. The main character takes a drug called Blue. She’s trying and failing to quit using it. For most of the story she’s either high or hungover or being given a miracle hangover cure by the ship’s AI. She isn’t sure if she committed the murder or not because she was high at the time it happened. The color palette is beautiful, but the story isn’t working for me.
With an intro like Starship Troopers advertising the different ways the normal can help the filthy rich. Where you cater to their every whim, be invisible, be an unwilling lab assistant or rat, just to save your life from a dying planet. Something is murdering the rich on this station in diabolical ways. And the only one on the station who is "in charge" is a glorified hall monitor with an addiction to "Blue." She is flawed, she doesn't know what the hell she is doing and when she gets help from the planet the help ends up super duper dead too. I love this book!

Well this has been the most disturbing of all comics I read tonight.
In more ways than one. I thought I would never have to read or encounter certain murder methods again after surviving high school history back in the day. What I will say is the art is otherwise easy on the eyes, and the story is paced nicely. Will I be reading the next one?
No.
It was simply too gory for me. That being said the story was well explained and it slowly introduces the series to you.
Know Your Station, Gailey, Kanga, Nalty Wealthy 1% live on a space station and a branded drug ‘Blue’ helps you achieve bliss (.. or crime?) ** “I NEEDED a hit of Ble after yesterday. .. But that’s it for me. No more.”
What fun! A murder mystery in space with technology helping along the way! I really like the premise of this story and look forward to reading more of the series!
