The first volume in a two-part series that explores the theory of Wing Chun—a style of kung fu and self-defense—from a technical, lifestyle, and philosophical perspective
Written by Wayne Belonoha—a certified Ving Tsun Instructor and National Certified Coach, 7th Level, Master Degree— The Wing Chun Compendium offers hundreds of tips and techniques specifically designed to help readers advance to the next stage.
The Wing Chun Compendium is divided into eight sections, including Theory, Techniques, Drills, Chi Sau (Sticky Hands), Forms, Pressure Points, Health and Fitness, and Terminology. Students of all levels will find tips for improving technique and gaining benefits from the book's instruction in over twenty of the top skill-building drills and exercises, such as the Maai Sang Jong and Bong Guek (Sticky Legs) drills. Covering all three hand forms (Siu Nim Tau, Cham Kiu, and Biu Ji), it also provides a detailed examination of each movement and application and features an extensive terminology section that includes the Chinese characters and both Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciations for over two hundred of the most common wing chun terms. The compendium concludes with Grandmaster Sunny Tang's special article, “Reflections of Siu Nim Tau After 30 Years.”
The Wing Chun Compendium, Volume One is a comprehensive and insightful guide to the theory, techniques, and philosophy of Wing Chun, offering a valuable resource for practitioners of all levels. Wayne Belonoha, a certified Ving Tsun Instructor, provides a wealth of tips and techniques, accompanied by clear instructions and illustrative images. Divided into eight sections, the compendium covers everything from theory and techniques to drills, forms, pressure points, and health and fitness. I found the inclusion of over twenty skill-building drills and exercises particularly helpful for enhancing my training. The detailed examination of each movement and application in the hand forms, along with the extensive terminology section, adds depth to the understanding of Wing Chun. Wayne Belonoha's book stands out for its clarity, comprehensive content, and practical insights, making it a valuable addition to the library of Wing Chun enthusiasts.
Still reading, it has some interesting parts but...not convincing. The part about the explanation of the forms and of the concepts of Wing Chun is too short. Too rigid in many assumptions and a lot of pages are spent for a detailed report with pictures, movement by movement, of every form and drill. But this is not what I search in a Wing Chun book: if I am already a student, as I am, I can do these things in my school; if I am not, it would be completely not useful anyhow. It gets three stars just for its completeness, I have to give to the author that there's a lot of work behind.
Edit: finished, I can just confirm my previous review.
An excellent book on the style of Wing Chun. Profusely illustrated with step by step instructions on the forms. Well worth having in your Wing Chun library no matter what style/family you practice.
