After the surprising revelation of the Tempest family history, twins Connor and Grace face a newly-defined future marked by their Vampirate roots. Meanwhile, Sidorio's evil Vampirate Empire continues its expansion, making it tragically apparent that no ship is safe. As for the pirates, they have a new mission: wipe out the vampirates.
There's a bloody battle brewing in the seas, and each crew will need all hands on deck. And, this time, Grace and Connor may find themselves fighting for their lives-or against each other.

Noooooooooooo! Justin Somper why do you torture us so?! Spoiler alert. Don't read any further unless you want to go smack your head against the wall.
Ok, so Grace and Connor are invited to the dark side by Sidorio and his not-dead wife Lady Lockwood. The pirates want a spy so they send Connor, who is still trying to come to grips with his true self. The Vampirates on the Nocturne, now known as the Nocturnals, send Grace for the same reason. Unbeknownst to either of the twins, the food that they are served aboard the Vagabond is laced with blood so their hunger for it will increase. Grace acclamates to her new enviornment well. Too well. She becomes a new person entirely. A new person whom I don't like. She forgets about herself because of her hunger and basically forgets Lorcan and goes after Johnny. Connor finds it a little more difficult to be comfortable among the Vampirates, but soon enjoys being with Johnny and his old pirate friend Jez Stukeley. Aboard the Tiger, Cheng Li's ship, they are working out plans to wipe out the Vampirate's growing empire. Aboard the Nocturne, Lorcan is in charge of getting the pacifist vampires ready for imminent battle. The first shocking thing that happens is the death of Molucco Wrathe. I can't imagine a futuristic pirate world without him. There are many other shocking things, like Grace's changes, but none so shocking as the true identity of Obsidian Darke, a cold Vampirate on Sidorio's ship. I had guessed it beforehand, but I wasn't 100% sure. It is none other than the captain of the Nocturne! I knew it! And two more ultra shocking things happen. Bart, Connor's best friend, is killed by Lady Lockwood, and was going to be turned by Sidorio, but Connor stopped him and gave Bart a proper burial at sea. And, the final most shocking thing of ALL. Lady Lockwood......is pregnant. With twins. Duh duh duhhhhhhh!!!! I almost started screaming. Why, oh why Justin? Whyyyyyy?
Vampirates Empire of Night was a thrilling 5th installemnt in the Vampirate Series. It is by far the most brilliantly written book but is the most durastic and character changing. It is also a whole lot darker than the previous books and has a more intense mindset. Although it may be a bit more stressful it creates a very high standard for all of his books to come. I am extremely eager to see what becomes of his next book and all the twists and turns he has. Overall, definitly a must read. :)
Quick review for now, and I might do a fuller one later.
*** Some spoilers from earlier books ***
I think I've given most of the books in this series a 3.5. It's not a great series, but it's steadily entertaining and I do enjoy it.
But I'm not bumping this one because everyone kind of irritated me in this book. And, yes, I do know that, for Connor and Grace at least, there's the fact that , and it has been established before that this can make people act badly - but that didn't stop me from feeling like a lot of it was just more soap-operay drama set-up, which was irritating. I'm getting tired of the melodrama.
Also, it bugged me that they were so sort of forgiving and willing to try and get to know Sidorio because of their relationship with him. I'm sorry, but I felt like far too much emphasis was being placed on blood relation.
Especially since Sidorio essentially metaphysically raped their mother. I mean, this has been totally glossed over and shrugged off - the same way Connor's issues with killing someone was, for instance.
And while I do appreciate, to some extent, a villain who is more shades of grey than totally evil, I just don't buy that Grace and Connor - and especially Grace - could even begin to forgive him for what he did, regardless of the rationale with their behavioral changes.
Also, I realized, with the death of another character in this book, that I'm not really attached to many of the characters, and that's never a good thing.
So, why still three stars?
Despite my irritation - and my fear that this is going to be drawn out past the point of care - I still found it a page-turner... and, for me, the biggest book crime is to be boring. So while I might get turned off if people keep being stupid for the sake of being stupid, for now, I'm still game for the quick, light read that this series provides.
Had you told me Sidorio would become a family man after my original introduction to the Vampirates series, I would have bet you ten bucks you were wrong. Then, upon reading 'Empire of Night', you would be ten bucks richer. I'm usually pretty good at guessing plots, but this book kept surprising me!
Let's talk character development... So good. In fact, it was so good that I found myself talking to the book-- scolding characters for their actions, asking why they were doing this, or how they could even consider that! And I'm not talking about just Connor and Grace-- I mean the whole cast of characters.
I feel bad for Grace, since she was betrayed by her friends, who she thought loved her. I hate how Sidorio and Lola want the twins to come and live with them. I like that Connor gets a sword, but I hate the third surprise. I hate how they kill Bart. I hate how they send the two people who betrayed the twins to give them the invitation. I like that Connor buried Bart and saved him from becoming a vampire. I felt really bad for Grace and Connor throughout the whole book.
No wau! Počas tohto dielu som stihla sympatizovať asi so všetkými postavami, vrátane tých záporných.
Minulej časti som dala 3* a tejto 5*. A teraz neviem či mne šibe alebo sú jednotlivé knihy kvalitatívne naozaj tak rozdielne.. potrebujem asi náhľad nejakej tretej strany do problematiky. :D
It was a pretty cool adventure, seeing the twins gice into their inner vampiric nature and seeing Connor lean into his nature and utilize his vampirity more was really fun, watching the girl go off the rails was a funny time as well.
A fun an remarkably weird adventure, their dad's a total moron haha, that old and that stupid, how really??
H-O-L-Y C-O-w! This one was amazing! Easlily the best book out of the series so far. I got super into it, and couldn't put it down. I got EXTREMELY mad when grace kissed johnny, i was freaking out. Just ask my friends at lunch or in German class. Then, when she started dissing her TRUE love, Lorcan, that made me even more angry. And what was with her and Connor, thinking they would like to stay on the Blood Captaiin forever?! Stuipd kids. At least they came to their senses. Or, maybe they were just putting on a show and was really doing their missions for the nocturnals and pirate federation. I personally think it was both, but when Bart was killed (which I freaked out at)and Grace saw Lorcan again for real it clicked into their head exactly what Sidorio and Lola were. Now, with Obsidian Drake. The mysterious man upon the Blood Captain. In the end when he decides to take Grace on the taking-over of the Tiger I assumed that he could be an ally towards the Nocturnals, and I was somewhat right. He wasn't just an ally, he was the FREAKIN CAPTAIN! I started bouncing up and down when I read this, because then I knew that many things could be resolved with just him standing there. It was a huge reasurrance. Even though this book made me super mad, it was definetely not like Mockingjay, or Inkdeath, where the series was kind of ruined for me. Everytime I got mad at this, I hungrily reached back for it to read more. I totally recommend this series to everyone!!!!

This series is truly a soap opera with the main characters are vampires who are pirates. I found following at least three stories at once to be annoying. I hate it when finally something good happens and then the author switches to another story line.
Summary to help remember for the next and hopefully final book. - Cheng Li, Captain of the Tiger, cons Connor into becoming a spy for the Pirate Federation now lead by both Wrathe brothers. - Mush Zu asks Grace to do the same thing, while asking Lorcan to train the now Nocturnals (passive vampires) and Darcy to spread the word. - Lola is not dead. Sordorio places her head next to her body and they become one again. She accepts that Sordorio has children and welcomes them. - Stukeley is to charm Connor and Johnny os to charm Grace. Both succeeding while Lola builds their appetites for blood. - Bart dies, by Lola's hands, trying to convince Connor to return to the Federation. This is the final straw and Connor goes off on his own, not sure where he is going and thinking that his friends will never accept him being a dhampir. - Grace returns to the Nocturne with the Captain returning in human form. She says that she likes Johnny and blood, both disturbing for Lorcan, but she says that she wants to work things out with him. - Johnny and Stukely return to the Blood Captain. - Sordorio and Lola are expecting twins.

What happened to this sereis? The first 3 books were refreshingly original filled with action, romance, and a touch of intrigue. Then we find ourselves at book 5, Empire of Night. Gone is everything we were made to believe about every character. Level-headed Grace abandons her ideals as soon as a pretty boy blinks his eyelashes her way. What happened to that slow-build with Lorcan? Apparently Cheng Li is having similiar feelings...even though she hates Vampirates. Connor hated them too, remember? Yupp he was okay enough to join their crew and once again buddy up with Stukeley. It was irritating to see all the work that was done with the plot and characters be thrown away in this volume...for what? It wasn't character development, more like character regression. They're right back where they started except with new prejudices having learned nothing at all. No one has. None of them. Except maybe Ma Kettle, she's the only one who has remained consistent. I'm too stubborn not to finish this damn series...so I will reluctantly trudge through the last one just to close out the series.
Lady Lola comes back to life and thanks to Sidorio is reunited with her own body! They alled theseinvite Connor and Grace to join them on the Blood Captain and the Vagabond but unknown to them they are both spying, Grace is for the Nocturne and the Vampirates the good one who have ca lled themselves the nocturnals and Connor for the pirate federation for Cheng Li using a mermaid or fish tail called Kally, we met in Dead Deep. Meanwhile Sidorio and Lola start a war on the federations ships, staring with the Albatross, They kill the captains and capture the ship to add to their fleet! They next capture the Diablo and kill Captain Molucco Wrathe, but come unstuck when they try to do the same to Tiger as unbeknown to them Captain Darke is really the Captain from the Nocturne! Meanwhile after eating cakes laced with blood, Grace is hanging out with Johnny more and has hunger for BlOOD actually starts drinking it!! Meanwhile Connor also has the hunger but does not act up on her urges like his Sister but decides he is not coming back to the federation, but Burt his friend from the Diablo has other ideas and tries to convince him to come back but Connor says No, Bert ignores him and comes on to the Vampirate ship.Lola and Sidorio hatch a mad plan and on the way back to his hip,Lola kills him!! Next night, to is utter horror, Connor is called to a cabin, and there is the dead body of Bert, who he intends to bring back as the undead! Connor is furious and leaves them for good, and at the end we find out Lola is heavily pregnant so what now for the future of Connor and Grace? The book had its moments where it was really gut then went flat again and i DO NOT AGREE WITH 2 DEAD PEOPLE CONCIEVING A BABY!!
Maybe I should be more lenient because this series came out 15 years ago but like.
Books 1 and 2 were so boring despite having the coolest premise ever Book 3 set up a pretty interesting premise finally Book 4 was weird and made the romance between Grace and Lorcan sus (he was literally present at her birth and held her as a baby and then there was like a solid week of time where she thought he might literally be her father and she wasn’t grossed out just mildly inconvenienced 😭), characters started acting annoying for no reason And now book 5 was ultra predictable to the point of constantly making my eyes roll and any potentially interesting angle or nuance to the characters or story arc was ignored or trampled over in favor of the most boring and over-used arcs in the entirety of the craft of storytelling. Grace’s love triangle is stupid. Lorcan lost all personality and suaveness after book one and also literally watched her be born and the cowboy literally called her a cow back in book 3 or 4 or whenever he was literally lassoing her and betraying her. So like. Ok.
God what a waste of the concept of vampire pirates.
In Vampirates the Empire of the Night. Connor and Grace find that their families have a deep history with the vampirates. Which I was surprised that the author didn't make them half human, and half vampire because then they would have to pick to fight with the human pirates or the vampirates in the coming war that happens in the immortal war, the sixth book in the series. The book is more focus on the history of Grace and Connor more then anything else. They learn that their family has been fighting Vampirates since the break of their chaos. And also how both the pirates, and vampirates are preparing for the war.

Connor tried, but cutting Lady Lola Lockwood's head off didn't actually kill the vampire. But Sidorio saved her by reattaching her head and revealed Connor and Grace are his children. In an effort to get rid of the Vampirates once and for all, Connor and Grace both agree to spend time with their father and new stepmother. Without their knowledge, their blood appetite is woken and with it, the need to drink blood from the source. When Connor's ship is next on the list of ships to get rid of, both Connor and Grace must decide where their loyalties truly lie.
Connor's friend Bart is killed, Jacoby is turned, Grace and Lorcean may not be meant for each other either.

I’m giving this book a 4-star because it’s what introduced me to reading fantasy at a young age when I had otherwise detested reading. Seriously, nothing and nobody could interest me in picking up a book until I happened upon the Vampirates front cover in my middle school’s library. I saw the skull and crossbones and nervously checked it out. I fell in love with it. It kept my young mind engaged and interested in turning the next page. Looking back as an adult, was it as wonderful as I originally believed it to be? Not quite. But I would read it again for the nostalgia…for remembering the feeling of “hey reading might not be so bad.” I love reading now, and I owe it to this series.
Was such a gripping book. I found every moment both shocking and I found that my blood ran cold multiple times, one when Sidario and Lola laced the Temple twins with blood and how their blood thirst effected them. Yet I also found his they were able to make it so that the twins would end up with them at the beginning was interesting and I found how they were able to manipulate them just shocking and the ending was just as shocking with emotion, action and drama at their hight. I can not wait to sink my teeth into the final book!
A swashbuckling ride where Pirates of the Caribbean meets Harry Potter, the Vampirates series follows the adventures of two twins enraptured within a dystopian world that harbors a pirate academy, a sanctuary for healing vampirates, a mysterious ship paired with lots of sword-fighting, bloody feuds and breathtaking adventures out in the open sea, surprisingly captured with a profound humanity. They will leave you gripping the edge of your seat, but don’t worry, bring your motion sickness pills along and simply trust the tide.
I’ve been talking nonstop about this series and how much I love it ( not anymore tho ) but this book heavily disappointed me, I HATED everyone in it, everyone seemed to change for absolutely no reason at all, especially Grace, simply horrid, Killing Molcco and Bart? Be for f real now 🤡 Don’t get me started on Connor and Jasmin 😃 why everyone is cheating on their partners in this damn awful book?
Safely the only thing that I can say is that the best thing that happened was Obsidian Darke being THE captain, I totally didn't see that coming ( no sarcasm I swear )

No. Just no. What did the author turn Grace into? I really enjoyed reading about Grace. I was so excited whenever it was about her. Why did she turn out to be a Mary Sue? *sigh*
I don’t want to read the next book, to be honest. I don’t know what to expect but based on how this one ended, it might not be any better... but I’ll do that, for the sake of finishing this series off.
It was just AMAZING. I really found it super interesting. The writing style was really easy, so you could read the book quickly. The story has many plot twists so they fill in the story with a lot of intrigue. There are some new characters, one of them is specially dark and full of mystery, which is great! I don't like some attitudes of Grace though
Quality of the series is slippery slope, I'm seriously worried about the last book. This one made me stop caring about characters for most part and I finished it only cause I want to finish the series, it took me almost 3 months to read it while in the case of the previous ones it was between one day to a week.
The action in this book comes and goes. I’m not sure what happened to Grace, but I really don’t like her in this book. Connor, as always, has an identity crisis. They both have secret missions to infiltrate Sidorio and Lola’s empire and relay back to Cheng Li and the vampirates on the Nocturne. The twins go through changes and choose sides again. Another good book in the series.
Oh my gosh this book was amazing! I just loved reading it! Everyone must read this book series! If you are into adventure, vampires, or pirates, then this is the book for you! Read the first book promise me! You will love it!
